Mantra 1

पञ्चौदनो अजः। आ नयैतमा रभस्व सुकृतां लोकमपि गच्छतु प्रजानन्। तीर्त्वा तमांसि बहुधा महान्त्यजो नाकमा क्रमतां तृतीयम्

The Five-odana Goat: lead thou this man forth; seize him and let him go unto the world of the well-deserving, as one that knoweth. Having crossed the darknesses, many and mighty, let the Goat step upward to the third heaven.

Mantra 2

इन्द्राय भागं परि त्वा नयाम्यस्मिन् यज्ञे यजमानाय सूरिम्। ये नो द्विषन्त्यनु तान् रभस्वानागसो यजमानस्य वीराः

For Indra’s share I lead thee duly on, within this sacrifice, for the sacrificer, the bounteous patron. Those who hate us—after them seize thou; guiltless are the heroes of the sacrificer.

Mantra 3

प्र पदोऽव नेनिग्धि दुश्चरितं यच्चचार शुद्धैः शफैरा क्रमतां प्रजानन्। तीर्त्वा तमांसि बहुधा विपश्यन्नजो नाकमा क्रमतां तृतीयम्

From the footstep wipe thou off, cast down, the evil deed—whatsoever hath been practised; with pure hoofs let him step on, as one that knoweth. Having crossed the darknesses, manifold, beholding clearly, let the Goat step upward to the third heaven.

Mantra 4

अनुच्छ्य श्यामेन त्वचमेतां विशस्तर्यथापर्व१सिना माभि मंस्थाः । माभि द्रुहः परुशः कल्पयैनं तृतीये नाके अधि वि श्रयैनम्

Cover him over with this dark hide, in jointed wise, that it overpass not unto the folk; fasten not upon us. Let not treacherous, cruel harms be fashioned against him: in the third heaven, there establish him firmly.

Mantra 5

ऋचा कुम्भीमध्यग्नौ श्रयाम्या सिञ्चोदकमव धेह्येनम्। पर्याधत्ताग्निना शमितारः शृतो गच्छतु सुकृतां यत्र लोकः

With a verse I set the pot upon the fire: pour on the water; set him down therein. Let the quieting attendants encompass it with fire; when cooked, let him go where is the world of the well-deserving.

Mantra 6

उत् क्रामातः परि चेदतप्तस्तप्ताच्चरोरधि नाकं तृतीयम्। अग्नेरग्निरधि सं बभूविथ ज्योतिष्मन्तमभि लोकं जयैतम्

Forth from the stepping onward—if he be not ill-baked—(yea) from the well-heated, and from the cooked oblation, mount ye to the third heaven. Upon Agni hath Fire firmly come to be: win ye this luminous world for your portion.

अजो अग्निरजमु ज्योतिराहुरजं जीवता ब्रह्मणे देयमाहुः । अजस्तमांस्यप हन्ति दूरमस्मिंल्लोके श्रद्दधानेन दत्तः

Unborn is Agni—Unborn, forsooth, they call the Light; Unborn, life-bestowing, they declare a gift to be bestowed upon the Brāhmaṇa. The Unborn drives darkness far away, when here in this world it is given by one of faithful mind.

Mantra 8

पञ्चौदनः पञ्चधा वि क्रमतामाक्रंस्यमानस्त्रीणि ज्योतींषि । ईजानानां सुकृतां प्रेहि मध्यं तृतीये नाके अधि वि श्रयस्व

Let the Fivefold Rice stride forth in five divisions; as it is advanced, (let it win) the three Lights. Go onward to the midst of the worshippers, of the well-doers; in the third heaven, thereon take thou thy settled seat.

Mantra 9

अजा रोह सुकृतां यत्र लोकः शरभो न चत्तोऽति दुर्गान्येषः । पञ्चौदनो ब्रह्मणे दीयमानः स दातारं तृप्त्या तर्पयाति

O Ajā, ascend where is the world of the well-doers: like the Śarabha, not fallen, pass thou over the hard straits. The Fivefold Rice, when it is given to the Brāhmaṇa, that same refreshes the giver with satisfaction and with fullness.

Mantra 10

अजस्त्रिनाके त्रिदिवे त्रिपृष्ठे नाकस्य पृष्ठे ददिवांसं दधाति । पञ्चौदनो ब्रह्मणे दीयमानो विश्वरूपा धेनुः कामदुघास्येका

The Unborn, in the threefold heaven, in the threefold sky, upon the triple summit, sets the giver on the back of heaven. The Fivefold Rice, when it is bestowed upon the Brāhmaṇa, is for him one wish-milking Cow, of all forms, yielding every desire.

Mantra 11

एतद् वो ज्योतिः पितरस्तृतीयं पञ्चौदनं ब्रह्मणेऽजं ददाति । अजस्तमांस्यप हन्ति दूरमस्मिंल्लोके श्रद्दधानेन दत्तः

This, O Fathers, is your third light: he giveth the fivefold rice-porridge, with a goat, unto the Brahman. The goat driveth the darknesses far away—here in this world—when it is bestowed by one who hath faith.

Mantra 12

ईजानानां सुकृतां लोकमीप्सन् पञ्चौदनं ब्रह्मणेऽजं ददाति । स व्याऽप्तिमभि लोकं जयैतं शिवो३ऽस्मभ्यं प्रतिगृहीतो अस्तु

Seeking the world of sacrificers, of the well-doing, he giveth the fivefold rice-porridge, with a goat, unto the Brahman. So may he win this world in full attainment; auspicious for us be it, when it is duly accepted.

Mantra 13

अजो ह्य१ग्नेरजनिष्ट शोकाद् विप्रो विप्रस्य सहसो विपश्चित्। इष्टं पूर्तमभिपूर्तं वषट्कृतं तद् देवा ऋतुशः कल्पयन्तु

For from Agni’s burning grief the Goat was born—wise, inspired, of the inspired one’s might, discerning. The sacrifice and the pious work, the over-filled pious work, made with the Vaṣaṭ—may the Gods, in season and in order, set that in due effect.

Mantra 14

अमोतं वासो दद्याद्धिरण्यमपि दक्षिणाम्। तथा लोकान्त्समाप्नोति ये दिव्या ये च पार्थिवाः

Let him give a choice garment, and gold also, as dakṣiṇā: thus doth he fully attain the worlds—those that are heavenly and those that are earthly.

Mantra 15

एतास्त्वाजोप यन्तु धाराः सोम्या देवीर्घृतपृष्ठा मधुश्चुतः । स्तभान पृथिवीमुत द्यां नाकस्य पृष्ठेऽधि सप्तरश्मौ

Let these streams come unto thee, O Goat—Soma-sweet, divine, with ghee for their back, honey-dripping—upholding Earth and Heaven, upon the summit of the firmament, on the seven-rayed (Sun).

अजो३स्यज स्वर्गोऽसि त्वया लोकमङ्गिरसः प्राजानन्। तं लोकं पुण्यं प्र ज्ञेषम्

O Aja, thou art heavenward; by thee the Angirases came to know the World. That holy World—may I win it, may I apprehend it forth.

Mantra 17

येना सहस्रं वहसि येनाग्ने सर्ववेदसम्। तेनेमं यज्ञं नो वह स्वऽर्देवेषु गन्तवे

With that whereby thou bearest a thousand, whereby, O Agni, thou bearest the All-knowing—therewith bear for us this sacrifice to heaven, to go unto the Gods.

Mantra 18

अजः पक्वः स्वर्गे लोके दधाति पञ्चौदनो निरृतिं बाधमानः । तेन लोकान्त्सूर्यवतो जयेम

The cooked Aja establishes (us) in the heavenly World; the fivefold rice-porridge, thrusting off Nirṛti. Therewith may we win the sun-bright Worlds.

Mantra 19

यं ब्राह्मणे निदधे यं च विक्षु या विप्रुष ओदनानामजस्य । सर्वं तदग्ने सुकृतस्य लोके जानीतान्नः संगमने पथीनाम्

What share he lays for the Brahman, and what (he lays) among the folk; what drops there be of the porridge-offerings of the Aja—all that, O Agni, in the World of Merit do thou acknowledge for us, at the meeting-place of the paths.

अजो वा इदमग्ने व्यऽक्रमत तस्योर इयमभवद् द्यौः पृष्ठम्। अन्तरिक्षं मध्यं दिशः पार्श्वे समुद्रौ कुक्षी

Aja, verily, O Agni, strode forth and pervaded this (All): of him this became the breast; heaven the back; the mid-air the middle; the quarters the sides; the two seas the two bellies.

Mantra 21

सत्यं चर्तं च चक्षुषी विश्वं सत्यं श्रद्धा प्राणो विराट् शिरः । एष वा अपरिमितो यज्ञो यदजः पञ्चौदनः

Truth and Order are its two eyes; all is Truth: Faith is its breath; Virāj its head. This, verily, is the immeasured Sacrifice—namely, the Goat with the Fivefold Porridge.

Mantra 22

अपरिमितमेव यज्ञमाप्नोत्यपरिमितं लोकमव रुन्धे । यो३ऽजं पञ्चौदनं दक्षिणाज्योतिषं ददाति

Immeasured, verily, a Sacrifice he gaineth; an immeasured world he fasteneth for himself—whoso giveth the Goat with the Fivefold Porridge, made radiant with the priestly Fee.

Mantra 23

नास्यास्थीनि भिन्द्यान्न मज्ज्ञो निर्धयेत्। सर्वमेनं समादायेदमिदं प्र वेशयेत्

Let him not break its bones, nor scrape away the marrow. Gathering it all together, let him cause it to enter—here, even here—into the appointed place.

Mantra 24

इदमिदमेवास्य रूपं भवति तेनैनं सं गमयति । इषं मह ऊर्जमस्मै दुहे यो३ऽजं पञ्चौदनं दक्षिणाज्योतिषं ददाति

‘This—this indeed’ becometh his very form; thereby he bringeth him into full attainment. Refreshment, greatness, and sustaining strength they milk for him—whoso giveth the Goat with the Fivefold Porridge, made radiant with the priestly Fee.

Mantra 25

पञ्च रुक्मा पञ्च नवानि वस्त्रा पञ्चास्मै धेनवः कामदुघा भवन्ति । यो३जं पञ्चौदनं दक्षिणाज्योतिषं ददाति

Five golden ornaments, five new garments, and five milch-cows, wish-yielding, become his—whoso giveth the Goat with the Fivefold Porridge, made radiant with the priestly Fee.

पञ्च रुक्मा ज्योतिरस्मै भवन्ति वर्म वासांसि तन्वेऽ भवन्ति । स्वर्गं लोकमश्नुते यो३जं पञ्चौदनं दक्षिणाज्योतिषं ददाति

Five golden disks become for him as light; as armour, garments for his body come to be. He reacheth the heavenly world—whoso bestoweth a yoke-team, the fivefold rice-oblation, a rite whose splendour is the priestly gift.

Mantra 27

या पूर्वं पतिं वित्त्वाथान्यं विन्दतेऽपरम्। पञ्चौदनं च तावजं ददातो न वि योषतः

She who, having known a former husband, thereafter findeth another, a later one—if those two bestow the fivefold rice and a goat, they part not asunder.

Mantra 28

समानलोको भवति पुनर्भुवापरः पतिः । यो३जं पञ्चौदनं दक्षिणाज्योतिषं ददाति

The later husband, born anew, becometh sharer of the self-same world—whoso bestoweth a yoke-team, the fivefold rice-oblation, a rite whose splendour is the priestly gift.

अनुपूर्ववत्सां धेनुमनड्वाहमुपबर्हणम्। वासो हिरण्यं दत्त्वा ते यन्ति दिवमुत्तमाम्

A milch-cow with calf in due succession, a draught-ox, a cushion, cloth and gold—having bestowed these, they go unto the highest heaven.

आत्मानं पितरं पुत्रं पौत्रं पितामहम्। जायां जनित्रीं मातरं ये प्रियास्तानुप ह्वये

Myself, my father, my son, my grandson, my grandsire; my wife, the bearer, my mother—those who are dear, them do I call hither unto me.

यो वै नैदाघं नामर्तुं वेद । एष वै नैदाघो नामर्तुर्यदजः पञ्चौदनः । निरेवाप्रियस्य भ्रातृव्यस्य श्रियं दहति भवत्यात्मना । यो३जं पञ्चौदनं दक्षिणाज्योतिषं ददाति

Whoso, in sooth, knoweth the season called Naidāgha by its name—this, verily, is the season Naidāgha, to wit, the goat with the fivefold rice-porridge—he burneth clean away the splendour of the unfriendly rival, and maketh it his own; even he who bestoweth the goat, the fivefold porridge, as a gift whose light is the priestly fee.

यो वै कुर्वन्तं नामर्तुं वेद । कुर्वतींकुर्वतीमेवाप्रियस्य भ्रातृव्यस्य श्रियमा दत्ते । एष वै कुर्वन्नामर्तुर्यदजः पञ्चौदनः । निरेवाप्रियस्य भ्रातृव्यस्य श्रियं दहति भवत्यात्मना। यो३जं पञ्चौदनं दक्षिनाज्योतिषं ददाति

Whoso, in sooth, knoweth by name the season called Kurvant, he draweth unto himself—yea, the very Kurvatī— the splendour of the unfriendly rival. This, verily, is the season Kurvant, to wit, the goat with the fivefold rice-porridge. He burneth clean away the rival’s splendour and maketh it his own, even he who bestoweth the goat and the fivefold porridge, a gift made luminous by the priestly fee.

यो वै संयन्तं नामर्तुं वेद । संयतींसंयतीमेवाप्रियस्य भ्रातृव्यस्य श्रियमा दत्ते । एष वै संयन्नामर्तुर्यदजः पञ्चौदनः । निरेवाप्रियस्य भ्रातृव्यस्य श्रियं दहति भवत्यात्मना। यो३जं पञ्चौदनं दक्षिणाज्योतिषं ददाति

Whoso, in sooth, knoweth by name the season called Saṃyant, he draweth unto himself—yea, the very Saṃyatī— the splendour of the unfriendly rival. This, verily, is the season Saṃyant, to wit, the goat with the fivefold rice-porridge. He burneth clean away the rival’s splendour and maketh it his own, even he who bestoweth the goat and the fivefold porridge, made luminous by the priestly fee.

यो वै पिन्वन्तं नामर्तुं वेद । पिन्वतींपिन्वतीमेवाप्रियस्य भ्रातृव्यस्य श्रियमा दत्ते । एष वै पिन्वन्नामर्तुर्यदजः पञ्चौदनः । निरेवाप्रियस्य भ्रातृव्यस्य श्रियं दहति भवत्यात्मना। यो३जं पञ्चौदनं दक्षिणाज्योतिषं ददाति

Whoso, in sooth, knoweth by name the season called Pinvant, he draweth unto himself—yea, the very Pinvatī— the thriving splendour of the unfriendly rival. This, verily, is the season Pinvant, to wit, the goat with the fivefold rice-porridge. He burneth clean away the rival’s splendour and maketh it his own, even he who bestoweth the goat and the fivefold porridge, made luminous by the priestly fee.

यो वा उद्यन्तं नामर्तुं वेद । उद्यतीमुद्यतीमेवाप्रियस्य भ्रातृव्यस्य श्रियमा दत्ते । एष वा उद्यन्न्नामर्तुर्यदजः पञ्चौदनः । निरेवाप्रियस्य भ्रातृव्यस्य श्रियं दहति भवत्यात्मना। यो३जं पञ्चौदनं दक्षिणाज्योतिषं ददाति

Whoso, verily, knoweth by name the season called Udyant, he draweth unto himself—yea, the very Udyatī— the splendour of the unfriendly rival. This, verily, is the season Udyant, to wit, the goat with the fivefold rice-porridge. He burneth clean away the rival’s splendour and maketh it his own, even he who bestoweth the goat and the fivefold porridge, made luminous by the priestly fee.

यो वा अभिभुवं नामर्तुं वेद । अभिभवन्तीमभिभवन्तीमेवाप्रियस्य भ्रातृव्यस्य श्रियमा दत्ते । एष वा अभिभूर्नामर्तुर्यदजः पञ्चौदनः । निरेवाप्रियस्य भ्रातृव्यस्य श्रियं दहति भवत्यात्मना । यो३जं पञ्चौदनं दक्षिनाज्योतिषं ददाति

Whoso knoweth the season by name, the Overpowerer,—even that overpowering Power,—he draweth unto himself the splendour of the unfriendly rival. This season verily is called the Overpowerer, namely the goat with the fivefold rice-porridge. It burneth clean away the splendour of the unfriendly rival, by its own inherent might, for him who bestoweth the goat and the fivefold porridge, made luminous with the priestly fee.

Mantra 37

अजं च पचत पञ्च चौदनान्। सर्वा दिशः संमनसः सध्रीचीः सान्तर्देशाः प्रति गृह्णन्तु त एतम्

Cook ye the goat, and the five rice-porridges. Let all the quarters, of one accord and in straight array, with the intermediate regions, accept this for thee.

Mantra 38

तास्ते रक्षन्तु तव तुभ्यमेतं ताभ्य आज्यं हविरिदं जुहोमि

Let those protect this for thee, for thy behoof. Unto them I pour this oblation of ghee.

Frequently Asked Questions

To gain inexhaustible sacrificial merit and an “unmeasured world” (aparimita loka) by presenting the aja-pañcaudana as a sacrifice equal to the whole cosmos.

It teaches that the rite ‘sees’ and succeeds through satya (truth) and ṛta (cosmic order); these principles are treated as the living organs that make the sacrifice effective and reliable.

The directions are asked to guard the achieved result on every side; offering ājya to them functions as a protective seal so the gained merit and world-attainment are not lost or obstructed.
