Guḍadhenu-māhātmya
Ritual-Manual (Dāna-vidhi and Phalaśruti)
In the Varāha–Pṛthivī pedagogical frame, the text presents a ritual manual for guḍadhenu-dāna, the construction and gifting of a cow-form donation made chiefly from jaggery (guḍa). The instructions specify the preparation of the ground and ritual seating, the shaping of the cow with detailed materials for horns, face, teeth, neck, tail, hooves, coverings, and ornaments, and the addition of auspicious features such as “butter-udders” and fruit adornments. The chapter then grades the donation into superior, middling, and lower forms according to weight/means, emphasizing proportional giving for households of different wealth. It prescribes worship with fragrances and flowers, gifting to a learned brāhmaṇa (śrotriya), recitation of a dedicated mantra, and appropriate accessories (umbrella, sandals). Finally, it adds a phalaśruti: the donation is said to remove misfortune, support prosperity, and lead the donor toward Viṣṇu’s realm, with recommended auspicious times (ayana, viṣuva, vyatīpāta, and at day’s end).

Within the Varāha–Pṛthivī teaching frame, the discourse turns from general dharma to a highly specific dāna-vidhi: how a householder should convert food-wealth (guḍa and allied auspicious substances) into a ritually valid cow-form gift (guḍadhenu).
A stepwise ritual manual is given: preparing the ritual ground and seat, constructing the cow’s body from jaggery with carefully specified anatomical parts and ornaments, then worshipping it with gandha-puṣpa and formally gifting it to a qualified śrotriya brāhmaṇa with mantra-recitation and customary accessories.
The teaching culminates in a graded standard of giving—uttama/madhyama/adhama—based on weight and the donor’s means (yathā-śakti), coupled with an ethical insistence on correct measures (no deceit in weighing) and on pātra-śuddhi (right recipient).
Phalaśruti promises removal of misfortune and stabilization of prosperity, culminating in ascent toward Viṣṇu’s realm; the text highlights potent times (ayana, viṣuva, vyatīpāta, and day’s end) while also allowing the gift whenever a worthy recipient is found.
No explicit historical toponyms are named. The phalaśruti uses a mythic-sacral landscape motif: rivers of milk (kṣīra-vahā nadyaḥ) and mud of ghee and payasa (ghṛta-pāyasa-kardamāḥ), functioning as symbolic ecology rather than identifiable geography.
The text frames prosperity and social stability as outcomes of disciplined redistribution: household resources are converted into a structured donation (guḍadhenu) and transferred to a qualified recipient (śrotriya brāhmaṇa). The internal logic emphasizes proportional giving (yathā-śakti), ritual accountability (warnings about deceit in measures), and the conversion of private wealth into public merit through regulated generosity—an ethic that can be read as sustaining communal welfare and reducing hardship.
The chapter recommends giving at ayana (solstitial transition points), viṣuva (equinox), vyatīpāta (a calendrical/astronomical conjunction regarded as potent), and dina-kṣaya (the close of the day). It also states that the gift may be offered “always,” provided a worthy recipient (pātra) is identified.
Although the passage is primarily a donation-ritual manual, its earth-centered implication lies in regulating consumption and converting agricultural/food-value goods (guḍa, dairy symbolism, fruits, textiles) into a socially redistributed offering. The repeated emphasis on measured, means-based giving (gṛha-vitta-anusāra) and avoidance of fraudulent weighing (tulā-kūṭa) can be interpreted as an early normative framework for sustainable household economy that indirectly supports terrestrial well-being—consistent with the Varāha–Pṛthivī discourse tradition.
No dynastic lineages are specified in the provided passage. Cultural roles invoked include the donor (dātā), the qualified Vedic recipient (śrotriya brāhmaṇa), and generalized sacred communities (ṛṣayaḥ, munayaḥ, siddhāḥ) in the phalaśruti’s otherworldly landscape. A royal addressee is implied by the vocative “mahārāja,” but without identification.
