Sukta 8.46

This hymn is a sustained praise of Indra as the community’s protector, guide, and giver of increase, inviting him to come swiftly to the sacrifice with his powers (harīs) and to bestow strength, prosperity, and victory. It develops Indra’s alliance with the Maruts as a dynamic force that furthers human striving and ritual success, and it closes with a vivid image of a returning feminine power that brings mastery and luminous sovereignty—suggesting the fruits of Indra’s aid as both outer and inner attainment.

Inside Sukta 46

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens with intimate allegiance: the worshippers declare themselves Indra’s own, protected by him, and established in his swift powers (harī).

  2. Development

Praise expands into Indra’s generosity and readiness to come; hymn and sacrifice are presented as the means by which Indra furthers human striving and empowers the Marut-forces.

  3. Climax

A strong invocation frames Indra as the bountiful one who has arrived and who, through yajña and inspired speech, advances both the people and the storm-powers that magnify his action.

  4. Where it settles

The closing image turns symbolic: a mighty feminine power ‘turns back’ toward the worshipper, bringing mastery over steed-force and being led forth adorned in gold—signaling the attained fruit of Indra’s aid as ordered, luminous sovereignty.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaHe is praised as mīḻhuṣ (bountiful), as a guide (praṇetṛ), and as one whose energies are yoked like swift steeds (harī).
  • Cosmic functionHe upholds order by overcoming obstructive forces, releasing vitality and abundance, and empowering the sacrificer’s community with victory, rain, and increase.
  • Inner significanceIndra signifies awakened force of consciousness—decisive will, courage, and the capacity to break inner obstructions—supported by the Maruts as surging energies that intensify aspiration and action.

The seer

  • Pragātha/Kāṇva tradition (exact rishi uncertain for RV 8.46)Kāṇva (probable Mandala 8 affiliation; specific gotra not securely determinable here) · Mandala 8 is strongly associated with the Kāṇvas and with vigorous Indra-praise in pragātha-style compositions; RV 8.46 reflects that idiom of direct address, invitation, and reward-seeking through hymn and offering.
