Devata

This hymn is a broad śānti (peace) and svasti (well-being) benediction that invokes many divine pairs—especially Indra joined with other powers—to secure protection, right movement, and victory for the worshippers. It expands from ritual allies (Indra–Agni, Indra–Varuṇa, Indra–Soma, Indra–Pūṣan) to cosmic supports such as Sūrya, the quarters, mountains, rivers, and waters, asking that all directions of life become auspicious. Inside Sukta 35

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct petition for peace and help through divine pairs, led by Indra joined with Agni, Varuṇa, Soma, and Pūṣan (RV 7.35.1).

  2. Development

The prayer widens from ritual efficacy and victory to a total-field blessing, extending peace to the Sun, the four directions, and the stable features of the world—mountains, rivers, and waters (e.g., RV 7.35.8).

  3. Climax

A comprehensive cosmic pacification in which every quarter and sustaining element is asked to become śaṃ (peace) for the worshipper, implying alignment of human life with ṛta.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn closes by addressing all sacrifice-worthy immortals together, asking for “wide-going” felicity and continual protection through svasti powers (RV 7.35.15).

The deity: Multiple paired deities and cosmic powers

  • In the VedaThe hymn addresses the gods in cooperative pairings, presenting them as mutually reinforcing powers: Indra as victorious strength, Agni as ritual priest and carrier, Varuṇa as guardian of ṛta, Soma as inspirer and vitalizing draught, and Pūṣan as guide and path-finder. It further sacralizes the cosmos—Sun, quarters, mountains, rivers, waters—treating the environment itself as capable of granting peace when aligned with ṛta.
  • Cosmic functionTo harmonize the human sacrifice with cosmic order so that protection, safe passage, and success arise from every quarter—ritual, social, and natural—through the coordinated action of divine forces.
  • Inner significanceAn integrated prayer for inner and outer concord: courage joined with clarity (Indra–Agni), power restrained by law (Indra–Varuṇa), energized will guided by truth (Indra–Soma), and purposeful drive led on the right path (Indra–Pūṣan), culminating in a felt sense of all-pervading peace.

The seer

  • VasiṣṭhaVasiṣṭha gotra (Āditya/Brāhmaṇa seer-line in RV tradition; chief of the Vasiṣṭhas) · Foremost among the Seven Ṛṣis, celebrated as a master of mantra and ṛta-centered kingship theology; central voice of Maṇḍala 7 with hymns of protection, prosperity, and royal legitimacy.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a śānti and svasti hymn: it asks for peace, protection, and smooth progress in life by invoking divine pairs and the supportive powers of the whole cosmos.

The pairs express complementary powers working together—strength with ritual fire, power with moral order (ṛta), inspiration with guidance—so the blessing covers every need from many angles.
