Sukta 35

Mantra 1

शं न इन्द्राग्नी भवतामवोभिः शं न इन्द्रावरुणा रातहव्या । शमिन्द्रासोमा सुविताय शं योः शं न इन्द्रापूषणा वाजसातौ ॥

Peace for us: may Indra and Agni become our helpers with their succours; peace for us: may Indra and Varuṇa, givers of the offering, establish it. Peace: may Indra and Soma lead us to the right going; peace and plenitude: may Indra and Pūṣan bring us victory in the gaining of force.

Mantra 2

शं नो भगः शमु नः शंसो अस्तु शं नः पुरंधिः शमु सन्तु रायः । शं नः सत्यस्य सुयमस्य शंसः शं नो अर्यमा पुरुजातो अस्तु ॥

Peace for us: may Bhaga be with us; peace indeed: may our word of affirmation be auspicious. Peace for us: may Purandhi bring her fullness; peace indeed: may the plenitudes (rāyas) be ours. Peace for us: may the affirmation of the True and the right-guided be with us; peace for us: may Aryaman, wide-born, establish harmony.

Mantra 3

शं नो धाता शमु धर्ता नो अस्तु शं न उरूची भवतु स्वधाभिः । शं रोदसी बृहती शं नो अद्रिः शं नो देवानां सुहवानि सन्तु ॥

Peace for us: may Dhātṛ, the establisher, and the Bearer uphold us; peace indeed. Peace for us: may the wide-shining Power be by her own right workings. Peace: may the vast two worlds be auspicious; peace for us: may the firm foundation be auspicious. Peace for us: may our invocations to the gods be good calls and rightly answered.

Mantra 4

शं नो अग्निर्ज्योतिरनीको अस्तु शं नो मित्रावरुणावश्विना शम् । शं नः सुकृतां सुकृतानि सन्तु शं न इषिरो अभि वातु वातः ॥

Peace for us: may Agni be a face of light; peace for us: may Mitra and Varuṇa, may the Aśvins bring harmony. Peace for us: may our right doings and the forces of right action be present. Peace for us: may the swift, impelling Wind breathe upon us with its clear movement.

Mantra 5

शं नो द्यावापृथिवी पूर्वहूतौ शमन्तरिक्षं दृशये नो अस्तु । शं न ओषधीर्वनिनो भवन्तु शं नो रजसस्पतिरस्तु जिष्णुः ॥

Peace for us: may Heaven and Earth, first-invoked, be auspicious; peace: may the mid-region be for us a clear field of seeing. Peace for us: may the plants and forest-powers be favourable. Peace for us: may the Lord of the spaces be victorious and establish our harmony.

Mantra 6

शं न इन्द्रो वसुभिर्देवो अस्तु शमादित्येभिर्वरुणः सुशंसः । शं नो रुद्रो रुद्रेभिर्जलाषः शं नस्त्वष्टा ग्नाभिरिह शृणोतु ॥

Peace for us: may Indra the god be with the Vasus; peace: may Varuṇa, well-affirming, be with the Ādityas. Peace for us: may Rudra, healing and gracious, be with the Rudras. Peace for us: may Tvaṣṭṛ here hear us together with the divine Mothers (gnā).

Mantra 7

शं नः सोमो भवतु ब्रह्म शं नः शं नो ग्रावाणः शमु सन्तु यज्ञाः । शं नः स्वरूणां मितयो भवन्तु शं नः प्रस्वः शम्वस्तु वेदिः ॥

Peace for us: may Soma become our inspired Word; peace for us. Peace for us: may the pressing-stones be peace; may the sacrificial workings be peace. Peace for us: may the measured harmonies of the luminous powers become peace; peace for us: may the forward impelling breath be peace; may the altar-seat of offering be peace.

Mantra 8

शं नः सूर्य उरुचक्षा उदेतु शं नश्चतस्रः प्रदिशो भवन्तु । शं नः पर्वता ध्रुवयो भवन्तु शं नः सिन्धवः शमु सन्त्वापः ॥

Peace for us: may the Sun of wide vision arise; peace for us: may the four quarters become peace. Peace for us: may the mountains be steadfast peace; peace for us: may the rivers be peace, and may the waters be peace.

Mantra 9

शं नो अदितिर्भवतु व्रतेभिः शं नो भवन्तु मरुतः स्वर्काः । शं नो विष्णुः शमु पूषा नो अस्तु शं नो भवित्रं शम्वस्तु वायुः ॥

Peace for us: may Aditi become peace by her laws; peace for us: may the Maruts, bright with good splendors, become peace. Peace for us: may Vishnu be peace; may Pūṣan be peace for us. Peace for us: may the becoming of our future be peace; may Vāyu be peace.

Mantra 10

शं नो देवः सविता त्रायमाणः शं नो भवन्तूषसो विभातीः । शं नः पर्जन्यो भवतु प्रजाभ्यः शं नः क्षेत्रस्य पतिरस्तु शम्भुः ॥

Peace for us: may Savitṛ, the divine impeller and protector, be peace; peace for us: may the Dawns, shining out, become peace. Peace for us: may Parjanya be peace for our becomings and births; peace for us: may the Lord of the Field be peace, the giver of well-being.

Mantra 11

शं नो देवा विश्वदेवा भवन्तु शं सरस्वती सह धीभिरस्तु । शमभिषाचः शमु रातिषाचः शं नो दिव्याः पार्थिवाः शं नो अप्याः ॥

Peace for us: may all the gods become peace; peace: may Sarasvatī be with our inspired understandings. Peace: the powers that press upon us, peace: the powers that bring gifts; peace for us: the heavenly ones, the earthly ones; peace for us: those of the waters/depths.

Mantra 12

शं नः सत्यस्य पतयो भवन्तु शं नो अर्वन्तः शमु सन्तु गावः । शं न ऋभवः सुकृतः सुहस्ताः शं नो भवन्तु पितरो हवेषु ॥

Peace for us: may the lords of Truth become peace; peace for us: may the steeds be peace; may the rays of light (cows) be peace. Peace for us: may the Ribhus, perfect in work and skilful-handed, be peace; peace for us: may the Fathers be peace in our invocations.

Mantra 13

शं नो अज एकपाद्देवो अस्तु शं नोऽहिर्बुध्न्यः शं समुद्रः । शं नो अपां नपात्पेरुरस्तु शं नः पृश्निर्भवतु देवगोपा ॥

Peace for us: may the god Aja-Ekapād be peace; peace for us: may Ahi Budhnya be peace; peace: may the Oceanic Vast be peace. Peace for us: may Apām Napāt, the shining one, be peace; peace for us: may Pṛśni be peace, the divine protector.

Mantra 14

आदित्या रुद्रा वसवो जुषन्तेदं ब्रह्म क्रियमाणं नवीयः । शृण्वन्तु नो दिव्याः पार्थिवासो गोजाता उत ये यज्ञियासः ॥

May the Ādityas, the Rudras, the Vasus take delight in this brahman, newly being made. May the heavenly and the earthly powers hear us—those born of Light, and those who are fit for the sacrifice.

Mantra 15

ये देवानां यज्ञिया यज्ञियानां मनोर्यजत्रा अमृता ऋतज्ञाः । ते नो रासन्तामुरुगायमद्य यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥

You who among the gods are worthy of the sacrifice, worthy among the worthy—adorable, immortal, knowers of the Right: grant to us today the wide-going (vast movement of felicity). You—protect us always with your powers of well-being.
