RV 8.33 is an Indra-invocation from the Kāṇva stream centered on the Soma-pressing: the poets, having purified the Soma through the filter, seat themselves around Indra and call him to descend into their clarified flow of praise and offering. The hymn repeatedly urges Indra to come swiftly with his tawny steeds, to outstrip rival claimants to the sacrifice, and to release strength, victory, and upward movement for the worshippers.

Mantra 1

वयं घ त्वा सुतावन्त आपो न वृक्तबर्हिषः । पवित्रस्य प्रस्रवणेषु वृत्रहन्परि स्तोतार आसते ॥

We who have pressed the Soma, with the strewn seat made ready like waters made pure, sit all around you, O slayer of the Coverer, at the outflowings of the filter—awaiting the descent of your force into our clarified currents.

Mantra 2

स्वरन्ति त्वा सुते नरो वसो निरेक उक्थिनः । कदा सुतं तृषाण ओक आ गम इन्द्र स्वब्दीव वंसगः ॥

The men of the hymn, in the pressed Soma, resound to you, O giver of riches, in the open expanse. When, thirsting for the pressed delight, will you come home, O Indra, like a swift-voiced singer to his own seat—so that the inner house may be filled with your power?

Mantra 3

कण्वेभिर्धृष्णवा धृषद्वाजं दर्षि सहस्रिणम् । पिशङ्गरूपं मघवन्विचर्षणे मक्षू गोमन्तमीमहे ॥

With the Kāṇvas, O bold one, you grant the plenitude of force, rich in a thousand forms—radiant in tawny beauty. O bounteous lord who sees widely, swiftly we seek from you a herding of Light, a fullness of illumined riches.

Mantra 4

पाहि गायान्धसो मद इन्द्राय मेध्यातिथे । यः सम्मिश्लो हर्योर्यः सुते सचा वज्री रथो हिरण्ययः ॥

Guard and chant the ecstasy of Soma’s essence for Indra, O Medhyātithi; for his is the harnessed joining of the two tawny powers, his is the golden chariot with the thunder-force, moving in companionship with the pressed delight—so that the victorious energy may be secured in us.

Mantra 5

यः सुषव्यः सुदक्षिण इनो यः सुक्रतुर्गृणे । य आकरः सहस्रा यः शतामघ इन्द्रो यः पूर्भिदारितः ॥

He whom we affirm in the chant—Indra who is perfectly effective on both sides (in all movements of the being), who gives the right ordering and discernment, who is lordly in force and of luminous will; who is a mine of a thousand energies, the giver of a hundred plenitudes; Indra who breaks the closed strongholds and sets the inner powers free.

यो धृषितो योऽवृतो यो अस्ति श्मश्रुषु श्रितः । विभूतद्युम्नश्च्यवनः पुरुष्टुतः क्रत्वा गौरिव शाकिनः ॥

He who is daring and unclosed to our call, who stands established even in the ruggedness of the lower nature; whose splendor is widely manifest, the mover who cannot be dislodged; much-praised, and by the power of will effective like the bull—Indra the capable doer.

क ईं वेद सुते सचा पिबन्तं कद्वयो दधे । अयं यः पुरो विभिनत्त्योजसा मन्दानः शिप्र्यन्धसः ॥

Who indeed knows him, drinking with the pressed Soma—what breadth of being he has assumed? This is he who breaks the strongholds by force, exhilarated, the Shiprī, by the Soma-substance.

Mantra 8

दाना मृगो न वारणः पुरुत्रा चरथं दधे । नकिष्ट्वा नि यमदा सुते गमो महाँश्चरस्योजसा ॥

Giver, like a wild beast, like an elephant, you take your roaming in many places. None restrains you; come to the pressed Soma—great, you move by your force.

Mantra 9

य उग्रः सन्ननिष्टृतः स्थिरो रणाय संस्कृतः । यदि स्तोतुर्मघवा शृणवद्धवं नेन्द्रो योषत्या गमत् ॥

He who is fierce, unthwarted, firm—made ready for the battle: if the bountiful one hears the call of the singer, then Indra will not hold back; he will come with his willing delight.

Mantra 10

सत्यमित्था वृषेदसि वृषजूतिर्नोऽवृतः । वृषा ह्युग्र शृण्विषे परावति वृषो अर्वावति श्रुतः ॥

Truly, just so you are the bull of power; the bull-impulsion is not withheld from us. For you, O fierce one, are indeed the bull that hears—heard in the far, heard in the near.

Mantra 11

वृषणस्ते अभीशवो वृषा कशा हिरण्ययी । वृषा रथो मघवन्वृषणा हरी वृषा त्वं शतक्रतो ॥

O Indra, lord of plenitude, thy impulsions are forceful; forceful is thy golden goad. Forceful is thy chariot, O giver of riches; forceful are thy two steeds. Forceful art thou, O Shatakratu—of a hundred efficacities.

Mantra 12

वृषा सोता सुनोतु ते वृषन्नृजीपिन्ना भर । वृषा दधन्वे वृषणं नदीष्वा तुभ्यं स्थातर्हरीणाम् ॥

Let the strong presser express for thee the forceful Soma; O strong one, O straight-driving, come, bring it. For the strong Soma is being set in motion—the forceful stream in the rivers—so that for thee the two tawny powers may take their station.

Mantra 13

एन्द्र याहि पीतये मधु शविष्ठ सोम्यम् । नायमच्छा मघवा शृणवद्गिरो ब्रह्मोक्था च सुक्रतुः ॥

Come, O Indra, for the drinking of the honeyed Soma, O most puissant. Let not the bountiful one fail to hear our words—our mantric thought and our hymns—O thou of good effective will.

Mantra 14

वहन्तु त्वा रथेष्ठामा हरयो रथयुजः । तिरश्चिदर्यं सवनानि वृत्रहन्नन्येषां या शतक्रतो ॥

May the tawny powers, yoked to the chariot, bring thee hither, O best of charioteers. Crossing even the rival, come to the Soma-pressings, O slayer of obstruction; surpass the others, O Shatakratu.

Mantra 15

अस्माकमद्यान्तमं स्तोमं धिष्व महामह । अस्माकं ते सवना सन्तु शंतमा मदाय द्युक्ष सोमपाः ॥

O Indra, vast in greatness, receive today our most inward hymn of affirmation. Let our pressings of Soma become for you the most peace-giving, so that you may enter the luminous ecstasy as the drinker of the delight.

Mantra 16

नहि षस्तव नो मम शास्त्रे अन्यस्य रण्यति । यो अस्मान्वीर आनयत् ॥

For indeed no other teaching delights—neither yours nor ours—except that heroic leading which brought us forward. It is the inner warrior-guidance alone that gives joy and direction.

Mantra 17

इन्द्रश्चिद्घा तदब्रवीत्स्त्रिया अशास्यं मनः । उतो अह क्रतुं रघुम् ॥

Even Indra said this: the mind in the feminine nature is not to be ruled by command; yet it has also a swift and ready will. So too within us, the receptive consciousness is not coerced—it is won and then moves quickly.

सप्ती चिद्घा मदच्युता मिथुना वहतो रथम् । एवेद्धूर्वृष्ण उत्तरा ॥

Even two yoked powers, though slipping from ecstasy, can still carry the chariot; such indeed is the higher yoking of the mighty. When the force is rightly paired, it bears the movement upward.

Mantra 19

अधः पश्यस्व मोपरि संतरां पादकौ हर । मा ते कशप्लकौ दृशन्त्स्त्री हि ब्रह्मा बभूविथ ॥

Look downward, not upward; draw in the two feet with steadiness. Let not your wavering steps be seen—for the soul becomes the knower by first becoming receptive. When the being turns inward and humble, the power of true word is born.
