RV 5.42 is a wide-ranging protective and prosperity hymn that sends a “peace-bearing” prayer to the Ādityas—especially Varuṇa, Mitra, Bhaga, and Aditi—asking for right order, safe passage, and well-being. It also calls on allied divine powers (notably Maruts and the Aśvins) to repel hostile forces and to bring wealth, strength, and “deathless” good fortune to the worshipper and community.
Mantra 1
प्र शंतमा वरुणं दीधिती गीर्मित्रं भगमदितिं नूनमश्याः । पृषद्योनिः पञ्चहोता शृणोत्वतूर्तपन्था असुरो मयोभुः ॥
Forward goes the most peace-bringing Word, seeking now Varuṇa, Mitra, Bhaga, and Aditi. Let the five-offering Power, whose womb is dappled light, hear it—the Unhindered in his path, the Asura who becomes for us the maker of bliss.
Mantra 2
प्रति मे स्तोममदितिर्जगृभ्यात्सूनुं न माता हृद्यं सुशेवम् । ब्रह्म प्रियं देवहितं यदस्त्यहं मित्रे वरुणे यन्मयोभु ॥
May Aditi receive my hymn as a mother takes her beloved son—heart-dear and full of good shelter. Whatever is in me of the cherished Word, placed by the gods, that I offer to Mitra and Varuṇa, the makers of bliss.
Mantra 3
उदीरय कवितमं कवीनामुनत्तैनमभि मध्वा घृतेन । स नो वसूनि प्रयता हितानि चन्द्राणि देवः सविता सुवाति ॥
Raise up the most seerful of the seers; anoint him with honey and clarified light. Then Savitṛ, the God, brings forth for us the riches that are prepared and set in place—luminous, shining possessions of the soul.
Mantra 4
समिन्द्र णो मनसा नेषि गोभिः सं सूरिभिर्हरिवः सं स्वस्ति । सं ब्रह्मणा देवहितं यदस्ति सं देवानां सुमत्या यज्ञियानाम् ॥
O Indra, lead us together by the mind, with the rays of light, with the illumined seers, O lord of the shining steeds—together into well-being. Lead us together by the inspired Word that is god-placed, and by the right-mindedness of the gods who are worthy of the sacrifice.
Mantra 5
देवो भगः सविता रायो अंश इन्द्रो वृत्रस्य संजितो धनानाम् । ऋभुक्षा वाज उत वा पुरंधिरवन्तु नो अमृतासस्तुरासः ॥
May the luminous Bhaga, Savitṛ the Impeller, the Portion of our inner plenitude, and Indra the Conqueror of the Coverer, win for us the true riches. May Ṛbhukṣan and Vāja (the power of effective fullness), and also Purandhi (the right-seeing intelligence), the immortal swift Ones, foster and protect us.
Mantra 6
मरुत्वतो अप्रतीतस्य जिष्णोरजूर्यतः प्र ब्रवामा कृतानि । न ते पूर्वे मघवन्नापरासो न वीर्यं नूतनः कश्चनाप ॥
We proclaim the deeds of the victorious one attended by the Maruts, of the unconquered, unfailing power. O Maghavan, neither the former nor the later ones have reached your might; none has attained a new measure of your hero-force.
Mantra 7
उप स्तुहि प्रथमं रत्नधेयं बृहस्पतिं सनितारं धनानाम् । यः शंसते स्तुवते शम्भविष्ठः पुरूवसुरागमज्जोहुवानम् ॥
Approach and praise first Bṛhaspati, the foundation of the treasure, the winner of riches. Most benignant to him who declares and hymns, the Many-wealthy comes to the one who calls again and again.
Mantra 8
तवोतिभिः सचमाना अरिष्टा बृहस्पते मघवानः सुवीराः । ये अश्वदा उत वा सन्ति गोदा ये वस्त्रदाः सुभगास्तेषु रायः ॥
By your helps, O Bṛhaspati, joining with you, we become unharmed, bountiful and rich in heroes. Those who give the horse-force, or give the rays of Light (cows), those who give the raiment of protection—fortunate are they; in them is the true plenitude.
Mantra 9
विसर्माणं कृणुहि वित्तमेषां ये भुञ्जते अपृणन्तो न उक्थैः । अपव्रतान्प्रसवे वावृधानान्ब्रह्मद्विषः सूर्याद्यावयस्व ॥
Make their gain a scattering and loss—those who consume yet do not fill us back by our hymns. Drive away from the Sun (the light of truth) the lawless ones who grow by perversion, the haters of the sacred Word.
Mantra 10
य ओहते रक्षसो देववीतावचक्रेभिस्तं मरुतो नि यात । यो वः शमीं शशमानस्य निन्दात्तुच्छ्यान्कामान्करते सिष्विदानः ॥
Whoever assails you, O Maruts, with the Rakṣas in the god-attended sacrifice, fall upon him, O Maruts, with your wheel-less might. And whoever from blame of the toiling seeker makes empty desires—deluding—bring him down.
Mantra 11
तमु ष्टुहि यः स्विषुः सुधन्वा यो विश्वस्य क्षयति भेषजस्य । यक्ष्वा महे सौमनसाय रुद्रं नमोभिर्देवमसुरं दुवस्य ॥
Praise him—Rudra—whose arrow is sure, whose bow is good; who holds mastery over every healing. Sacrifice to the Great for a wideness of goodwill; serve the God, the Asura (mighty life-lord), with acts of reverent offering.
Mantra 12
दमूनसो अपसो ये सुहस्ता वृष्णः पत्नीर्नद्यो विभ्वतष्टाः । सरस्वती बृहद्दिवोत राका दशस्यन्तीर्वरिवस्यन्तु शुभ्राः ॥
May the house-lords, the active powers with good hands— the rivers, consorts of the mighty—well-fashioned, bring us widening. Sarasvatī, and Bṛhaddivā, and also Rākā, the bright goddesses who serve and cherish, may they grant us spaciousness and right felicity.
Mantra 13
प्र सू महे सुशरणाय मेधां गिरं भरे नव्यसीं जायमानाम् । य आहना दुहितुर्वक्षणासु रूपा मिनानो अकृणोदिदं नः ॥
Forth for the Great, for the Good Refuge, I bring the inspired intelligence, a newer speech being born. He who, striking in the milking-places of the Daughter, shaping and transforming the forms, has made this for us.
Mantra 14
प्र सुष्टुतिः स्तनयन्तं रुवन्तमिळस्पतिं जरितर्नूनमश्याः । यो अब्दिमाँ उदनिमाँ इयर्ति प्र विद्युता रोदसी उक्षमाणः ॥
May the well-made praise, O singer, attain now the Lord of the libation, the thundering, the roaring One—he who sets in motion the oceanic and the watery vastness, and with lightning pours upon the two worlds.
Mantra 15
एष स्तोमो मारुतं शर्धो अच्छा रुद्रस्य सूनूँर्युवन्यूँरुदश्याः । कामो राये हवते मा स्वस्त्युप स्तुहि पृषदश्वाँ अयासः ॥
This is the hymn that goes straight to the Marut-host, to Rudra’s youthful sons; may you rise to them. The soul’s desire calls for plenitude (rāyí); for our well-being draw near and praise the speckled-horsed powers, O unwearied one.
Mantra 16
प्रैष स्तोमः पृथिवीमन्तरिक्षं वनस्पतीँरोषधी राये अश्याः । देवोदेवः सुहवो भूतु मह्यं मा नो माता पृथिवी दुर्मतौ धात् ॥
Forth goes this hymn—toward Earth, the mid-space, the lords of the woods and the healing herbs—so that you may attain plenitude. May the God among gods be easy to invoke for me; may our Mother Earth not place us in a crooked mind and ill-guidance.
Mantra 17
उरौ देवा अनिबाधे स्याम ॥
O gods, may we be in the wide, unobstructed space—free from pressure and binding.
Mantra 18
समश्विनोरवसा नूतनेन मयोभुवा सुप्रणीती गमेम । आ नो रयिं वहतमोत वीराना विश्वान्यमृता सौभगानि ॥
With the Ashvins’ ever-new help—bringing gladness and right leading—may we arrive. Bring to us plenitude, and also heroic powers; bring all the deathless prosperities.
It is a prayer for peace, protection, and prosperity, centered on the Ādityas (Varuṇa, Mitra, Bhaga, Aditi). The hymn asks for orderly success (ṛta), safety from harmful forces, and well-being for the worshipper and community.
The hymn gathers complementary powers: the Ādityas uphold truth and order, the Maruts provide active protection against disruptive forces, and the Aśvins bring renewal, guidance, and practical help. Together they cover moral order, defense, and flourishing.
It means enduring, life-supporting blessings—health, stable wealth, strength, and good fortune that are not easily lost. In Vedic language, “amṛta” points to what sustains life and aligns one with lasting well-being rather than short-lived gains.
