Vāyu
Gāyatrī (likely; short 3-pāda structure typical of gāyatrī invites)
This hymn chiefly invites Vāyu, the swift Life-Wind, to arrive on his thousand-powered chariots and drink the Soma, energizing and clarifying the worshippers’ vital force. As the rite unfolds, the prayer widens to protection and auspiciousness—calling also for Indra’s grace and for the wider company of yajñiya (sacrifice-worthy) gods to take their seats and partake.
Mantra 1
वायो ये ते सहस्रिणो रथासस्तेभिरा गहि । नियुत्वान्त्सोमपीतये ॥
O Vāyu, with those thousand-powered chariots of yours come here, yoked with your teams, for the drinking of Soma—so the life-breath in us may receive the illumining delight.
Mantra 2
नियुत्वान्वायवा गह्ययं शुक्रो अयामि ते । गन्तासि सुन्वतो गृहम् ॥
Come, O Vāyu, with your yoked teams; this bright Soma I extend to you. You will come to the house of the presser—into the prepared inner dwelling of the offering.
Mantra 3
शुक्रस्याद्य गवाशिर इन्द्रवायू नियुत्वतः । आ यातं पिबतं नरा ॥
Today, of the bright Soma mixed with the cow’s essence, O Indra and Vāyu with your yoked teams—come; drink, O two heroic powers, so the illumined force and the life-breath may act together in us.
Mantra 4
अयं वां मित्रावरुणा सुतः सोम ऋतावृधा । ममेदिह श्रुतं हवम् ॥
This Soma, pressed out for you, O Mitra and Varuṇa, increasers of the Truth-Order—hear here and now my call: let my aspiration be received.
Mantra 5
राजानावनभिद्रुहा ध्रुवे सदस्युत्तमे । सहस्रस्थूण आसाते ॥
The two kings, unbetraying, sit firm in the highest seat of the assembly, upheld by a thousand pillars—powers of stable sovereignty in the soul’s council.
Mantra 6
ता सम्राजा घृतासुती आदित्या दानुनस्पती । सचेते अनवह्वरम् ॥
Those two universal rulers, rich in the outpouring of clarified light, Ādityas, lords of abundance, move in accord toward the straight, unwavering path—making our progress free from deviation.
Mantra 7
गोमदू षु नासत्याश्वावद्यातमश्विना । वर्ती रुद्रा नृपाय्यम् ॥
O Nāsatyas, O Aśvins, come with the riches of luminous knowledge and with the powers of swift energy; bring also the protecting course, O Rudras, that guards the human journey.
Mantra 8
न यत्परो नान्तर आदधर्षद्वृषण्वसू । दुःशंसो मर्त्यो रिपुः ॥
No enemy—neither from beyond nor from within—can overbear you, O mighty givers of force; the ill-speaking mortal adversary cannot prevail.
Mantra 9
ता न आ वोळ्हमश्विना रयिं पिशङ्गसंदृशम् । धिष्ण्या वरिवोविदम् ॥
Bring to us, O Aśvins, that plenitude of being—bright to behold—O lords of luminous skill, finders of wide spaces in our nature.
Mantra 10
इन्द्रो अङ्ग महद्भयमभी षदप चुच्यवत् । स हि स्थिरो विचर्षणिः ॥
Indra indeed confronted the great fear and cast it away; for he is steadfast, the wide-ranging power that makes the human nature grow beyond its limits.
Mantra 11
इन्द्रश्च मृळयाति नो न नः पश्चादघं नशत् । भद्रं भवाति नः पुरः ॥
May Indra also be gracious to us; let no evil overtake us from behind—let what is auspicious become our leader in front.
Mantra 12
इन्द्र आशाभ्यस्परि सर्वाभ्यो अभयं करत् । जेता शत्रून्विचर्षणिः ॥
May Indra make fearlessness all around us from every side; the wide-ranging one becomes the conqueror of the hostile powers.
Mantra 13
विश्वे देवास आ गत शृणुता म इमं हवम् । एदं बर्हिर्नि षीदत ॥
All you divine powers, come; hear this my invocation. Sit down upon this sacred spread—take your place in the prepared field of the consciousness.
Mantra 14
तीव्रो वो मधुमाँ अयं शुनहोत्रेषु मत्सरः । एतं पिबत काम्यम् ॥
This Soma-rapture, intense and honey-rich, is for you in the true-offerings of the swift-impelled sacrifice; drink of this, the desirable draught that awakens delight and power within.
Mantra 15
इन्द्रज्येष्ठा मरुद्गणा देवासः पूषरातयः । विश्वे मम श्रुता हवम् ॥
O host of the Maruts with Indra as your foremost, O gods who give the plenitudes of Pūṣan, all of you—hear my call; let the powers of right impulse answer the soul’s invocation.
Mantra 16
अम्बितमे नदीतमे देवितमे सरस्वति । अप्रशस्ता इव स्मसि प्रशस्तिमम्ब नस्कृधि ॥
O most Mother, most River, most Goddess—Sarasvatī: as though unpraised we are; O Mother, make for us the praise that is true, the right recognition that uplifts the soul into its wideness.
Mantra 17
त्वे विश्वा सरस्वति श्रितायूंषि देव्याम् । शुनहोत्रेषु मत्स्व प्रजां देवि दिदिड्ढि नः ॥
In you, Sarasvatī, all our life-movements find their support in the divine; in the swift true-offerings take delight, and, O Goddess, set firmly for us the growth of our being and the birth of the soul’s right progeny.
Mantra 18
इमा ब्रह्म सरस्वति जुषस्व वाजिनीवति । या ते मन्म गृत्समदा ऋतावरि प्रिया देवेषु जुह्वति ॥
These word-powers, Sarasvatī, accept—O you rich in plenitudes of force; the thought which the Gṛtsamada offers to you, O chooser of the Truth, dear among the gods, is poured forth as an oblation into the divine powers.
Mantra 19
प्रेतां यज्ञस्य शम्भुवा युवामिदा वृणीमहे । अग्निं च हव्यवाहनम् ॥
Go forth for the sacrifice as the two powers of peace and well-being; you two we choose today—Idā the right inspiration, and Agni the carrier of the offering—so the inner rite may advance without distortion.
Mantra 20
द्यावा नः पृथिवी इमं सिध्रमद्य दिविस्पृशम् । यज्ञं देवेषु यच्छताम् ॥
Heaven and Earth, for us today uphold this accomplished sacrifice that touches the luminous worlds; set our offering in the gods—so the human act is joined to the divine order.
Mantra 21
आ वामुपस्थमद्रुहा देवाः सीदन्तु यज्ञियाः । इहाद्य सोमपीतये ॥
Let the gods worthy of sacrifice sit here today upon your faultless seat, O you two; here, now, for the drinking of Soma—so the powers may gather in the human being and partake of the illumining delight.
The hymn mainly addresses Vāyu, the Wind and Life-Breath, inviting him to come quickly and drink Soma. Some verses also call on Indra and the wider group of gods to bless and protect the worshippers.
On the ritual level it means Vāyu is invited to partake of the pressed Soma offering. On an inner level it suggests the life-force (breath/prāṇa) receiving clarity, vigor, and luminous joy through the sacred rite.
It is a concise prayer for protection and right direction in life: may harm not overtake us unexpectedly, and may what is good and благоприятное lead our path forward. Many readers remember it as a universal Vedic blessing for safe progress.
