सुन्दरकाण्ड
In this sarga, Hanumān—moving as a covert observer—encounters the opulent sleeping chamber within Rāvaṇa’s inner palace. The narration foregrounds material splendor: crystal and gem-encrusted couches, golden furnishings, garlands, lamps, perfumes, and ritual-like luxury. Hanumān then sees the rākṣasa-king asleep, described through layered similes (cloud, twilight-red sky with lightning, Mandara mountain, elephant by the Gaṅgā), emphasizing power, sensuality, and martial history marked upon his body. The chapter also records Hanumān’s momentary fear at Rāvaṇa’s serpent-like breathing and his subsequent recovery of composure, illustrating vigilance under pressure. The gaze widens to the sleeping women of the harem—artists and attendants—portrayed with instruments and ornaments, forming a tableau of exhausted revelry. Hanumān notices Mandodarī, mistakes her for Sītā due to her beauty and adornment, and briefly rejoices; the episode functions as an interpretive test, showing how visual evidence must be checked against dharmic criteria. The sarga thus juxtaposes royal excess with the seeker’s ethical discernment and advances the reconnaissance motif central to Sundarakāṇḍa.
Verse 5.10.1
तत्र दिव्योपमं मुख्यं स्फाटिकं रत्नभूषितम्।अवेक्षमाणो हनुमान् ददर्श शयनासनम्।।।।दान्तकाञ्चनचित्राङ्गैर्वैडूर्यैश्च वरासनैः।महार्हास्तरणोपेतैरुपपन्नं महाधनैः।।।।
There Hanumān, looking about, beheld a foremost couch, heavenly in splendor—made of crystal, encrusted with gems, inlaid with ivory and gold, set with vaidūrya, and furnished with exquisitely costly coverings—befitting great wealth.
Verse 5.10.2
तत्र दिव्योपमं मुख्यं स्फाटिकं रत्नभूषितम्।अवेक्षमाणो हनुमान् ददर्श शयनासनम्।।5.10.1।।दान्तकाञ्चनचित्राङ्गैर्वैडूर्यैश्च वरासनैः।महार्हास्तरणोपेतैरुपपन्नं महाधनैः।।5.10.2।।
Those arms were anointed and adorned with exquisite sandal paste—cool, fragrant, and reddish like the blood of a hare—so that they gleamed in luxurious finery even as they lay at rest.
Verse 5.10.3
तस्य चैकतमे देशे सोऽग्य्रमालाविभूषितम्।ददर्श पाण्डुरं छत्रं ताराधिपतिसन्निभम्।।।।
With four golden lamps blazing, the chamber shone in all four directions; his whole body was lit up, like a cloud illuminated by clusters of lightning.
Verse 5.10.4
जातरूपपरिक्षिप्तं चित्रभानुसमप्रभम्।अशोकमालाविततं ददर्श परमासनम्।।।।वालव्यजनहस्ताभिर्वीज्यमानं समन्ततः।गन्धैश्च विविधैर्जुष्टं वरधूपेन धूपितम्।।।।परमास्तरणास्तीर्णमाविकाजिनसंवृतम्।दामभिर्वरमाल्यानां समन्तादुपशोभितम्।।।।
He beheld a supreme couch, overlaid with gold, radiant as the sun, and spread with garlands of aśoka blossoms. On every side women fanned it with yak-tail fans; it was steeped in many fragrances and perfumed with choice incense. It was covered with the finest bedspreads, overlaid with soft woolen skins, and adorned all around with strings of splendid flower-garlands.

It was fanned on all sides by women holding chamara-hair fans, and was filled with many fragrances, perfumed with excellent incense-smoke.

He saw a splendid couch spread with the finest coverings, overlaid with soft woollen fleece, and beautified on every side with strings of excellent garlands.

तस्मिन् जीमूतसंकाशं प्रदीप्तोत्तमकुण्डलम्।लोहिताक्षं महाबाहुं महारजतवाससम्।।।।लोहितेनानुलिप्ताङ्गं चन्दनेन सुगन्धिना।सन्ध्यारक्तमिवाकाशे तोयदं सतटिद्गणम्।।।।वृतमाभरणैर्दिव्यैः सुरूपं कामरूपिणम्।सवृक्षवनगुल्माढ्यं प्रसुप्तमिव मन्दरम्।।।।क्रीडित्वोपरतं रात्रौ वराभरणभूषितम्।प्रियं राक्षसकन्यानां राक्षसानां सुखावहम्।।।।पीत्वाऽप्युपरतं चापि ददर्श स महाकपिः।भास्वरे शयने वीरं प्रसुप्तं राक्षसाधिपम्।।।।
Upon that couch he saw the lord of the rākṣasas—cloud-dark in hue, wearing brilliantly shining earrings, red-eyed, mighty-armed, and clothed in garments of silvery sheen.

His limbs were smeared with fragrant red sandal paste, so that he appeared like a cloud in the sky reddened at twilight and streaked with flashes of lightning.

Adorned with divine ornaments, handsome and able to assume forms at will, he lay asleep like Mount Mandara—dense with trees, forests, and thickets.

At night, when revelry had ceased, he lay at rest adorned with choice ornaments—beloved of the rākṣasa maidens and a giver of pleasure to the rākṣasas.

That great monkey also saw the lord of the rākṣasas—the heroic one—lying asleep upon a shining bed, having ceased even after drinking.
Verse 5.10.12
निःश्वसन्तं यथा नागं रावणं वानरर्षभः।आसाद्य परमोद्विग्नस्सोपासर्पत्सुभीतवत्।।।।
Reaching Rāvaṇa, whose breath came like that of a serpent, the bull among the Vānaras grew greatly agitated and drew back, as though struck by sudden fear.
Verse 5.10.13
अथाऽऽरोहणमासाद्य वेदिकाऽन्तरमाश्रितः।सुप्तं राक्षसशार्दूलं प्रेक्षते स्म महाकपिः।।।।
Then the great monkey, reaching a stairway and taking shelter on another platform, looked again upon the sleeping tiger among the rākṣasas.
Verse 5.10.14
शुशुभे राक्षसेन्द्रस्य स्वपतः शयनोत्तमम्।गन्धहस्तिनि संविष्टे यथा प्रस्रवणं महत्।।।।
The demon-king’s splendid couch shone as he slept—like the great Prasravaṇa hill when an elephant in rut has settled upon it.
Verse 5.10.15
काञ्चनाङ्गदसन्नध्दै च ददर्श स महात्मनः।विक्षिप्तौ राक्षसेन्द्रस्य भुजाविन्द्रध्वजोपमौ।।।।ऐरावतविषाणाग्रैरापीडनकृतव्रणौ।वज्रोल्लिखितपीनांसौ विष्णुचक्रपरिक्षतौ।।।।पीनौ समसुजातांसौ संगतौ बलसंयुतौ।सुलक्षणनखाङ्गुष्ठा स्वङ्गुलीतललक्षितौ।।।।संहतौ परिघाकारौ वृत्तौ करिकरोपमौ।विक्षिप्तौ शयने शुभ्रे पञ्चशीर्षाविवोरगौ।।।।शशक्षतजकल्पेन सुशीतेन सुगन्धिना।चन्दनेन परार्ध्येन स्वनुलिप्तौ स्वलङ्कृतौ।।।।उत्तमस्त्रीविमृदितौ गन्धोत्तमनिषेवितौ।यक्षपन्नगगन्धर्वदेवदानवराविणौ।।।।
He saw the great-souled demon-king’s arms, bound with golden armlets, flung out upon the bed—like the twin flagstaffs of Indra.

Those thick, powerful arms bore scars from hard blows—gored by the tips of Airāvata’s tusks, scored by Indra’s thunderbolt, and wounded by Viṣṇu’s discus.

They were thick and well-proportioned, firm and endowed with strength—marked by auspicious thumbnails, and distinguished by well-formed fingers and palms.

Compact like iron bars, rounded like an elephant’s trunk, those arms lay flung upon the spotless bed—like two serpents with five hoods.

There Hanumān saw an excellent couch, fitted with fine seats inlaid with ivory and gold and set with vaidūrya gems, furnished with costly coverings—befitting great wealth.
Verse 5.10.20

They were massaged by the finest women and tended with the choicest perfumes—arms whose very might could make yakṣas, nāgas, gandharvas, gods, and dānavas cry out in fear.
Verse 5.10.21
ददर्श स कपिस्तत्र बाहू शयनसंस्थितौ।मन्दरस्यांतरे सुप्तौ महाही रुषिताविव।।।।
There the monkey-warrior saw the two arms resting upon the bed, like two mighty serpents asleep within a cave of Mount Mandara, as though still fierce.
Verse 5.10.22
ताभ्यां स परिपूर्णाभ्यां भुजाभ्यां राक्षसेश्वरः।शुशुभेऽचलसङ्काशः शृङ्गाभ्यामिव मन्दरः।।।।
With those two fully formed arms, the lord of the rākṣasas shone like a mountain—like Mandara with its twin peaks.
Verse 5.10.23
चूतपुन्नागसुरभिर्वकुलोत्तमसंयुतः।मृष्टान्नरससंयुक्तः पानगन्धपुरस्कृतः।।।।तस्य राक्षससिंहस्य निश्चक्राम महामुखात्।शयानस्य विनिःश्वासः पूरयन्निव तद् गृहम्।।।।
From the vast mouth of that lion among rākṣasas, as he lay asleep, his exhalation issued forth as though filling the entire chamber.
Verse 5.10.24
चूतपुन्नागसुरभिर्वकुलोत्तमसंयुतः।मृष्टान्नरससंयुक्तः पानगन्धपुरस्कृतः।।5.10.23।।तस्य राक्षससिंहस्य निश्चक्राम महामुखात्।शयानस्य विनिःश्वासः पूरयन्निव तद् गृहम्।।5.10.24।।
From the vast mouth of that lion among rākṣasas, as he lay asleep, his breath flowed out, as though filling the entire chamber.

Hanumān saw Rāvaṇa in his palace—glittering with gold, adorned with pearls and gems. His crown had slipped aside, and his face shone with earrings. Smeared with red sandal paste and graced with a splendid necklace, his broad, fleshy chest gleamed. His eyes were blood-red; a white linen cloth had fallen slightly out of place, yet he was well covered with a costly yellow upper garment. Dark as a heap of black gram, he breathed heavily like a serpent, sleeping like an elephant on the bank of the great Gaṅgā. Four golden lamps blazed around him, lighting the four directions; his whole body was illumined, like a cloud streaked with flashes of lightning. Hanumān also saw the beloved wives of that great lord of the rākṣasas, lying at his feet within his house.

Smeared with red sandal paste and adorned with a gleaming necklace, his broad, full chest shone with great splendor.

His eyes were blood-red; he was wrapped in fine white linen that had slipped out of place, and he was well covered with an excellent yellow upper garment.

मुक्तामणिविचित्रेण काञ्चनेन विराजितम्।मकुटेनापवृत्तेन कुण्डलोज्वलिताननम्।।5.10.25।।रक्तचन्दनदिग्धेन तथा हारेण शोभिना।पीनायतविशालेन वक्षसाऽभिविराजितम्।।5.10.26।।पाण्डरेणापविद्धेन क्षौमेण क्षतजेक्षणम्।महार्हेण सुसंवीतं पीतेनोत्तमवाससा।।5.10.27।।माषराशिप्रतीकाशं निश्श्वसन्तं भुजङ्गवत्।गाङ्गे महति तोयान्ते प्रसुप्तमिव कुञ्जरम्।।5.10.28।।चतुर्भिः काञ्चनैर्दीपैद्धीप्यमानचतुर्दिशम्।प्रकाशीकृतसर्वाङ्गं मेघं विद्युद्गणैरिव।।5.10.29।।पादमूलगताश्चापि ददर्श सुमहात्मनः।पत्नी: स प्रियभार्यस्य तस्य रक्षःपतेर्गृहे।।5.10.30।।
In one part of that chamber, Hanumān saw a white ceremonial umbrella, adorned with the finest garlands, shining like the Moon, lord of the stars.
Verse 5.10.29

He saw him like a heap of black beans, breathing heavily like a serpent; like an elephant asleep on the bank of the great Gaṅgā’s waters.
Verse 5.10.30

There, in the house of that lord of the rākṣasas, he also saw the wives of that great one—his dear consorts—seated at his feet.
Verse 5.10.31
शशिप्रकाशवदनाश्चारुकुण्डलभूषिताः।अम्लानमाल्याभरणा ददर्श हरियूथपः।।।।
The vanara leader saw women whose faces shone like the Moon, adorned with lovely earrings, and wearing garlands and ornaments not yet withered.
Verse 5.10.32
नृत्तवादित्रकुशला राक्षसेन्द्रभुजाङ्कगाः।वराभरणधारिण्यो निषण्णा ददृशे हरिः।।।।
Hanumān saw women skilled in dance and music, wearing fine ornaments, reclining as they rested upon the demon-king’s arms and lap.
Verse 5.10.33
वज्रवैडूर्यगर्भाणि श्रवणान्तेषु योषिताम्।ददर्श तापनीयानि कुण्डलान्यङ्गदानि च।।।।
On the women’s ears he saw earrings set with diamonds and vaiḍūrya gems, and also gleaming golden ornaments—earrings and armlets.
Verse 5.10.34
तासां चन्द्रोपमैर्वक्त्रैश्शुभैर्ललितकुण्डलैः।विरराज विमानं तन्नभस्तारागणैरिव।।।।
With their auspicious moon-like faces and delicate, lovely earrings, that splendid couch-chamber shone—like the night-sky radiant with hosts of stars.
Verse 5.10.35
मदव्यायामखिन्नास्ता राक्षसेन्द्रस्य योषितः।तेषु तेष्ववकाशेषु प्रसुप्तास्तनुमध्यमाः।।।।
Worn out by intoxication and exertion, the demon-king’s women—slender-waisted—had fallen asleep here and there in various places.
Verse 5.10.36
अङ्गहारैस्तथैवान्या कोमलैर्नृत्तशालिनी।विन्यस्तशुभसर्वाङ्गी प्रसुप्ता वरवर्णिनी।।।।
Another woman—delicate, a skilled dancer, and of exquisite complexion—slept with her graceful limbs still arranged in a dance-posture, as if habit held her body even in sleep.
Verse 5.10.37
काचिद्वीणां परिष्वज्य प्रसुप्ता सम्प्रकाशते।महानदीप्रकीर्णेव नलिनी पोतमाश्रिता।।।।
One woman slept clasping her vīṇā; she gleamed like a lotus-plant borne upon a great river, clinging to a boat.
Verse 5.10.38
अन्या कक्षगतेनैव मड्डुकेनासितेक्षणा।प्रसुप्ता भामिनी भाति बालपुत्रेव वत्सला।।।।
Another dark-eyed woman slept with a maḍḍuka-drum tucked in her armpit, shining like an affectionate mother holding her little child.
Verse 5.10.39
पटहं चारुसर्वाङ्गी पीड्य शेते शुभस्तनी।चिरस्य रमणं लब्ध्वा परिष्वज्येव भामिनी।।।।
A lovely, full-limbed woman with beautiful breasts slept clasping a paṭaha-drum, as though a passionate woman were embracing a lover obtained after a long time.
Verse 5.10.40
काचिद्वंशं परिष्वज्य सुप्ता कमललोचना।रहः प्रियतमं गृह्य सकामेव च कामिनी।।।।
One lotus-eyed woman slept clasping a vaṃśa, the bamboo flute, as though a lover in secret were holding her beloved, desire still upon her.
Verse 5.10.41
विपञ्चीं परिगृह्यान्या नियता नृत्तशालिनी।निद्रावशमनुप्राप्ता सह कान्तेव भामिनी।।।।
Another woman—self-possessed and skilled in dance—slept with a vipañcī in her arms, as though a beloved had been overtaken by sleep beside her lover.
Verse 5.10.42
अन्या कनकसङ्काशैर्मृदुपीनैर्मनोरमैः।मृदङ्गं परिपीड्याङ्गैः प्रसुप्ता मत्तलोचना।।।।
Another woman, her eyes heavy with intoxication, slept while pressing a mṛdaṅga close with her delightful limbs, golden-hued and softly full.
Verse 5.10.43
भुजपार्श्वान्तरस्थेन कक्षगेन कृशोदरी।पणवेव सहानिन्द्या सुप्ता मदकृतश्रमा।।।।
Another flawless woman, slender-waisted, slept with a paṇava pressed between her arm and side and tucked into her armpit, wearied by intoxication.
Verse 5.10.44
डिण्डिमं परिगृह्यान्या तथैवासक्तडिण्डिमा।प्रसुप्ता तरुणं वत्समुपगूह्येव भामिनी।।।।
Another woman, still clinging in the same way to her ḍiṇḍima-drum, slept soundly, like a mother embracing her young calf.
Verse 5.10.45
काचिदाडम्बरं नारी भुजसंयोगपीडितम्।कृत्वा कमलपत्राक्षी प्रसुप्ता मदमोहिता।।।।
One lotus-petal-eyed woman, deluded by intoxication, fell asleep after tightly clasping in her arms an instrument called the āḍambara.
Verse 5.10.46
कलशीमपविध्यान्या प्रसुप्ता भाति भामिनी।वसन्ते पुष्पशबला मालेव परिमार्जिता।।।।
One lovely woman lay fast asleep after pushing aside a water-vessel; another appeared like a garland of many-hued spring flowers, as though freshly swept and set in order.
Verse 5.10.47
पाणिभ्यां च कुचौ काचित्सुवर्णकलशोपमौ।उपगूह्याबला सुप्ता निद्राबलपराजिता।।।।
Another woman, overpowered by the force of sleep, lay asleep clasping her breasts with both hands—breasts likened to golden goblets.
Verse 5.10.48
अन्या कमलपत्राक्षी पूर्णेन्दुसदृशानना।अन्यामालिङ्ग्य सुश्रोणीं प्रसुप्ता मदविह्वला।।।।
Another woman, lotus-petal-eyed and full-moon-faced, embraced a woman of lovely hips and slept, drowsy and unsteady from intoxication.
Verse 5.10.49
आतोद्यानि विचित्राणि परिष्वज्य वरस्त्रियः।निपीड्य च कुचैस्सुप्ता कामिन्यः कामुकानिव।।।।
Exquisite women slept clasping wondrous musical instruments, pressing them to their breasts, like passionate lovers embracing their beloveds.
Verse 5.10.50
तासामेकान्तविन्यस्ते शयानां शयने शुभे।ददर्श रूपसम्पन्नामपरां स कपिः स्त्रियम्।।।।
Among those women sleeping apart on excellent beds, the monkey (Hanuman) saw yet another woman, richly endowed with beauty.
Verse 5.10.51
मुक्तामणिसमायुक्तैर्भूषणैः सुविभूषिताम्।विभूषयन्तीमिव तत्स्वश्रिया भवनोत्तमम्।।।।गौरीं कनकवर्णाभामिष्टामन्तः पुरेश्वरीम्।कपिर्मन्दोदरीं तत्र शयानां चारुरूपिणीम्।।।।
There the monkey saw Mandodari, beautiful in form, sleeping—adorned with ornaments set with pearls and gems, as though by her own radiance she were decorating that splendid mansion. Fair and golden-hued, she was the beloved chief queen of the inner apartments.
Verse 5.10.52
मुक्तामणिसमायुक्तैर्भूषणैः सुविभूषिताम्।विभूषयन्तीमिव तत्स्वश्रिया भवनोत्तमम्।।5.10.51।।गौरीं कनकवर्णाभामिष्टामन्तः पुरेश्वरीम्।कपिर्मन्दोदरीं तत्र शयानां चारुरूपिणीम्।।5.10.52।।
The monkey saw Mandodari there, sleeping—radiant, golden-hued, and exquisitely adorned with pearl-and-gem ornaments, as if her own splendor embellished the finest of mansions; she was the favored queen of the inner palace.
Verse 5.10.53
स तां दृष्ट्वा महाबाहुर्भूषितां मारुतात्मजः।तर्कयामास सीतेति रूपयौवनसम्पदा।।।हर्षेण महता युक्तो ननन्द हरियूथपः।
Seeing her adorned, the mighty-armed son of the Wind-god reasoned, “This must be Sita,” judging by her abundance of beauty and youth; filled with great joy, the leader of the vanaras rejoiced.
Verse 5.10.54
आस्फोटयामास चुचुम्ब पुच्छं ननन्द चिक्रीड जगौ जगाम।स्तम्भानरोहन्निपपात भूमौ निदर्शयन् स्वां प्रकृतिं कपीनाम्।।।।
He clapped his hands, kissed his tail, rejoiced, played, sang, and moved about—climbing the pillars and leaping down to the ground—thus displaying his own nature as a monkey.
