What the texts say

In the Rigveda, Saraswati is invoked as a worthy goddess of flowing clarity, asked to come to the sacrifice and hear the worshippers' word. Rig Veda 5.43.11 The Devi Bhagavatam calls her the embodiment of all learning, who grants people intellect, poetic ability, brilliance and memory. Devi Bhagavatam 9.1.30 In the Skanda Purana, Saraswati and Gayatri are both spoken of as consorts of the god Brahma. Skanda Purana 3.1.40.4 The Matsya Purana tells it differently: Brahma brought her forth and ordained her as his own daughter, born from his very body. Matsya Purana 3.32 The Agni Purana pictures her holding a book, a rosary and a vina. Agni Purana 3.50.16 In the Mahabharata, she is also the foremost river, which becomes hidden at a place called Vinasana beneath the desert. Mahabharata 3.82.5, 3.80.118 The Devi Bhagavatam speaks of worshipping her on Vasant Panchami, the fifth day of Magha's bright fortnight. Devi Bhagavatam 9.30.98
