What the texts say
In the Shiva Purana, Rudra is remembered as Shiva himself, and there is said to be no destruction for him even when the cosmic egg is destroyed. Shiva Purana 2.2.24.8 It also tells that Parvati brought forth a son named Ganesha. Ramayana 1.43.7, 1.42.24 The Linga Purana calls the Linga the Shaiva emblem, a sacred sign for contemplation and worship of Shiva, who is declared to be without mark. Linga Purana 1.3.1
