Inside Sukta 63

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

An urgent invitation: Soma is called to flow toward the worshippers, bringing thousandfold abundance and heroic power, and to establish śravas (inspired hearing/fame) among them.

  2. Development

The hymn cycles through images of sweetness, purification, and forward motion—Soma’s honeyed ecstasy is framed as the force that draws divine powers near and converts ritual action into tangible prosperity.

  3. Climax

Soma’s mada is declared the most god-winning (devavītama): the purified flow becomes the decisive means of obtaining divine assistance and expansive wealth (rayi).

  4. Where it settles

The hymn closes by asking Soma/Indu to “hold” for the community all riches—both heavenly and earthly—sealing the rite’s aim as total, auspicious plenitude.

The deity: Soma Pavamāna

  • In the VedaSoma is the pressed plant-essence and its deified power, praised as honeyed (madhumat), exhilarating (mada), bright (indu), and purifying as he streams through the filter (pavitra). He is invoked as a bestower of wealth (rayi), fame/inspired hearing (śravas), and victorious strength (vīrya).
  • Cosmic functionMediator of vitality between gods and humans: through purification and offering, Soma energizes the devas, sustains ṛta (cosmic order), and channels prosperity and strength into the sacrificer’s world.
  • Inner significanceThe clarified flow symbolizes inner refinement—purifying thought, speech, and intention—so that inspired insight and courageous energy arise; Soma’s “sweet intoxication” points to uplifted consciousness rather than mere sensory stimulation.

The seer

  • Pavamāna Soma seer-poets (Soma Maṇḍala tradition)Composing the Mandala 9 corpus that is tightly linked to the Soma-pressing rite, using refrains and metrical regularity to match the rhythmic, processional movement of Soma through the filter (pavitra).

Attributes of the deity

  • Pavitra-gāmi (moving through the filter)
  • Madhumat (honey-rich, sweet)
  • Mada (ecstatic, energizing)
  • Rayi-dātṛ (giver of abundance)
  • Śravas-dhāraka (establisher of fame/inspired hearing)
  • Indu (bright drop, luminous essence)

Also by this seer

  • Numerous Pavamāna hymns across Rig Veda Mandala 9 (Soma Maṇḍala), traditionally distributed among multiple seer-families and ritual lineages rather than a single named ṛṣi for each hymn.

The rite, step by step

  • Press Soma stalks and collect the expressed juice.
  • Mix/prepare with water (and traditionally with milk/curds as appropriate to the rite) for refinement.
  • Filter the Soma through the pavitra (wool/strainer), reciting Pavamāna verses to sacralize the flowing stream.
  • Collect the purified Soma in vessels; continue chant as the stream runs clear and strong.
  • Offer Soma in libation to the gods (often with Agni as the carrier), seeking rayi, vīrya, and śravas for the sacrificer.

Offerings

  • Purified Soma juice (pavamāna Soma)
  • Libations into the sacred fire (as per Soma rite)

Frequently Asked Questions

It praises Soma as he is purified through the filter and asks him to bring prosperity (rayi), strength (vīrya), and inspired fame or right hearing (śravas) to the worshippers.

Because these verses are tied to the ritual moment when Soma juice is physically flowing through the pavitra (filter). The outward flow mirrors inner purification and the arrival of divine help.

In these hymns, mada is Soma’s uplifting, energizing ecstasy. It is treated as a sacred power that strengthens the mind and life-force and helps the sacrificer attract the gods’ support.
