Sukta 5.10

Devata

Agni

This short Agni-hymn asks the Fire-priest to bring “ojishtha dyumna”—the strongest luminous power—and to set an open path toward victory, wealth, and force (vāja). It praises those whose inspired words adorn Agni and who, through inner ardor (śuṣma), awaken wide fame, then ends by invoking Agni as Aṅgiras and Hotṛ to grant all-conquering riches and growth amid conflicts.

Mantras

Mantra 1

O Agni, bring to us the most puissant luminous power, O unbroken one. With abundance of being and plenitude of riches, set for us forward the path that leads to the winning of the Force.

Mantra 2

Thou, O Agni, art wonderful in thy will and in the impetuous bounty of thy skill. In thee the Asurya power mounts upward, growing; like Mitra, thou becomest worthy of the sacrifice by thy harmonizing mastery.

Mantra 3

O Agni, increase for us their joy of being and their plenitude of growth—of those luminous men who by the hymns have won the gifts of the Great Ones.

Mantra 4

Those, O Agni, whose bright words adorn thee—rich in swift energies—those forceful men by their might awaken of themselves a vast and noble fame, even as if from heaven.

Mantra 5

Thine, O Agni, are those flames that go shining with a daring movement—like far-ranging lightnings; roaring like a chariot, they press on seeking the plenitude of force.

Mantra 6

Now, O Agni, be for our help and for our giving, and let our illumined ones with thee cross over all the horizons of hope toward the farther shore.

Mantra 7

Thou, O Agni of the Angiras, praised and ever praised, bring to us—O priest of the offering—a wealth that conquers all widenesses, for the singers and for the one who praises; and grow for us into increase in the battles.

Frequently Asked Questions

It asks Agni to bring powerful inner and outer light (dyumna), to grant abundance and wealth, and to set a clear path toward victory and successful accomplishment (vāja).

Because in the Vedic view, well-formed inspired words are themselves offerings; they ‘adorn’ Agni and awaken strength, confidence, and lasting good repute.

Hotṛ means the priest who performs and carries the offering; Aṅgiras links Agni with the ancient seer-line of the Aṅgirases, symbolizing inspired fire that guides and protects the worshipper.
