Outer meaning

Indra is called to come from three far regions and beyond the five peoples; the dhenās (nourishing streams) have looked down and shone for him.

Inner meaning

The invocation asks Indra to descend from higher planes (“three far distances”) and transcend the ordinary human formations (“five peoples”—the fivefold sense-bound nature). Then the dhenās—streams/cows of light—release their downward look: illumination pours into the mind for Indra’s action within the seeker.

Universal truth

True illumination comes when consciousness opens beyond habitual sense-identity; then higher light naturally ‘looks down’ and feeds the being.

Themes

Descent from beyond, Five peoples, Cows as rays of knowledge, Indra’s coming

Lineage
Kāṇva (probable)
Other hymns
RV 8.3, RV 8.6, RV 8.48

Family tradition

Kāṇva seers frequently speak of ‘descents’ of light and Indra’s arrival from afar to aid the inner battle.

Significance

The seer frames spiritual progress as a movement of ascent beyond the fivefold lower nature and a corresponding descent of luminous nourishment.
