yáṁ tvā hótāram mánasā́bhi saṁvidús tráyodaśa bhúvanāḥ páñca mānavā́ḥ | várcodhasé yáśase sūnṛ́tāvate tébhyo agníbhyo hútam astv etát
Thee, whom as Hotar they have with the mind acknowledged—thirteen are the worlds, and five the races of men—for increase of splendour, for fame, for possession of gracious truth: to those Fires let this oblation be offered.
Agni as Hotṛ is acknowledged ‘with the mind’ by cosmic and human orders: thirteen worlds and five human races; the offering is for varcas (splendour/health), yaśas (fame), and sūnṛtā (gracious truthful speech).
Mind-recognition (manasā abhi saṃviduḥ) signals inward consent: when one internally appoints the ‘Hotṛ’ (the discerning, speech-guiding fire), speech becomes truthful and beneficial, and vitality becomes radiant.
True radiance and reputation arise when inner intention, speech, and action are officiated by a steady ethical ‘fire’—a principle recognized across all levels of life.
To obtain varcas (health-splendour), yaśas (renown), and sūnṛtā (auspicious truthful speech) by offering to the universally acknowledged Agni-Hotar across cosmic and human orders.

Sāyaṇa explains Agni-as-Hotar as the cosmic officiant recognized by all orders of existence. ‘Thirteen bhuvanas’ is taken as a cosmological totality (variously enumerated in Vedic tradition), while ‘five mānavas’ denotes the five peoples/tribal groupings. The stated fruits—varcas, yaśas, sūnṛtā—are classic Atharvanic aims: bodily radiance/health, social standing, and efficacious truthful speech (speech as power).
AVŚ 3.21.1-6; AVŚ 7.12 (themes of speech/auspicious utterance; broad functional parallel)
Atharvanic redactional voice (Śaunaka AV)
Paustika augmentation (varcas/yaśas) through Agni-Hotṛ; vāc-therapy via sūnṛtā.
Encodes the Atharvan insight that speech is a pharmakon: when ‘officiated’ by Agni, it heals social and bodily life through truth that is also auspicious.
Agni Hotṛ (plural fires as recipients)
Priestly fire that mediates between realms; the organizing principle that makes offerings—and by extension intentions—effective across worlds and peoples.
Varcas as health-splendour implies strengthening vitality and ‘glow’ (conceptually akin to ojas/tejas).
Protects reputation and speech from error/inauspiciousness; stabilizes social standing through truthful utterance.
4 pādas; first two carry enumerations (13 worlds, 5 human groups), third lists goals, fourth is offering formula.
Slightly prosaic enumeration within triṣṭubh movement; refrain anchors performance.
Ceremonial and declarative; the numbers create a ‘cosmic register’ feel.
Expands the listener’s frame from personal to universal, then concentrates into three boons (varcas/yaśas/sūnṛtā) and seals with oblation.
Perform homa with ghee; recite the mantra to consecrate the offering toward varcas and yaśas.
After oblation, have the beneficiary face east; the priest recites the mantra again softly while touching the head/shoulders (seat of ‘varcas’).
For sūnṛtā (speech), the beneficiary may sip water (ācamanīya) or taste a small portion of consecrated ghee/food, sealing ‘true-speech’ potency.
Close with a śānti recitation and dismissal of the fire.
Kauśika Sūtra: paustika rites for varcas/yaśas and śānti-homa applications employing AV 3.21 as offering-formulas (edition-dependent).
Atharvan as paustika-operator: channels Agni’s cosmic recognition into personal radiance, reputation, and speech efficacy.
Recite near the domestic fire/lamp before important speech (teaching, negotiation, testimony) or when seeking to restore reputation and vitality.
Morning (for varcas) or before public appearance; also on Wednesdays/Thursdays in later practice (optional, non-Vedic).
Householder; teacher/purohita if used in a formal ‘vāc’ consecration setting.
Often compatible with household agnihotra-style offerings; Kauśika paustika rites for varcas/yaśas commonly involve fire + recitation (exact sūtra varies).
Before presentations: lamp, one spoon of ghee (or symbolic offering), then mindful truthful intention.
Oblation (ghee); Varcas (radiant health as quasi-substance); Speech-power (sūnṛtā)
Agni-Hotṛ as operative; oblation implies ghṛta. Varcas treated as quasi-substance (radiant essence).
Fire transforms gross offering into subtle radiance (varcas) and refined speech (sūnṛtā); fame is the social ‘fragrance’ of that refinement.
General loss of vitality/splendour (varcas-kṣaya), speech-inauspiciousness (aśivā vāc), psychosomatic depletion.
Indirect: throat/speech (vāg), whole-body radiance (varcas).
Strengthening inner ‘agni’ and vāg-śuddhi through offering + truthful-speech intention; social healing via restoring reputation and coherence.
Varcas overlaps with tejas/ojas expression; sūnṛtā aligns with sāttvika vāg and stress reduction; supportive to agni and prāṇa regulation (conceptual).
Voice-confidence, reduced social anxiety, and vitality rituals; supportive practice for burnout recovery (non-medical).
Increase varcas (radiant health), yaśas (good name), and sūnṛtā (auspicious truthful speech) by offering to Agni universally recognized as Hotṛ.
Numerical totalization (13 worlds, 5 peoples) to universalize the claim; homa seal to fix the boon.
Defamation, speech errors, loss of charisma/health-glow, social fragmentation.
Reputation, leadership presence, persuasive truthful communication, vitality.
Purify speech: let words arise only after passing through an inner ‘fire of truth’.
vishuddha
Gentle ujjāyī-like throat breathing (soft) while repeating ‘sūnṛtā’ mentally; end with a silent pause.
A small flame at the throat turning harsh words into warm light; radiance spreading to face and skin as varcas.
Sattvic clarity and benevolence in communication.
Before speaking, recite once; then speak slowly, ensuring truth + kindness + usefulness (sūnṛtā triad).
Keep enumeration phrases evenly paced; let the refrain fall like a cadence.
Mark clear word breaks: trayodaśa | bhauvanāḥ || pañca | mānavāḥ.
Clear and resonant, slightly brighter on ‘varcōdhase’ and softer on ‘sūnṛtāvate’.
For vāc-related efficacy, avoid chanting while emotionally agitated; Atharvanic ‘speech-medicine’ requires composure.
7 times
When needing confident, truthful, persuasive speech; rebuilding reputation; seeking renewed vitality/charisma.
Morning practice; before interviews, teaching, negotiations, or apologies/reconciliations.
Steadier voice, improved composure, enhanced social trust, felt increase in ‘radiance’ and motivation.
Do not use to manipulate; sūnṛtā requires truthfulness—avoid affirmations that contradict reality/ethics.
Even when plants are not named, the rite’s material base (ghee, food) is ultimately botanical/zoic transformed by Agni. Varcas is conceptualized as a refined ‘essence’ produced by correct transformation—mirroring how medicine refines plant potency into bodily radiance.
The goals—splendour, fame, authoritative speech—are social capital. The mantra positions Agni as universally legitimated (cosmos + ‘five peoples’), thereby underwriting the beneficiary’s status claims through ritual authorization managed by the priest.
The explicit paustika triad varcas–yaśas–sūnṛtā is strongly Atharvanic in its domestic-social orientation. The cosmological numeration (‘thirteen worlds’) reflects later/systematizing tendencies beyond the most archaic RV strata.
Gopatha’s concern with Atharvanic authority and bandhu would read ‘thirteen worlds’ and ‘five peoples’ as totalities: by addressing Agni recognized in all totalities, the rite claims comprehensive legitimation, making varcas and yaśas not merely personal but cosmically ratified.
