アタルヴァ・ヴェーダ第18巻は、ヴェーダにおける最大のアンティエーシュティ（葬送・火葬）讃歌集であり、マントラと供物、そして祖霊への整合によって、死のもたらす境界的な危険から亡者を導き、ピトリ（祖霊）たちの秩序ある領域へと移行させる。しばしばピトリメーダ（Pitṛmedha）／火葬次第に結び付けられる四つのスークタは、身体の解体、アグニ（Agni）による運搬、魂の前進する旅路をṛta（宇宙的秩序）に結び、死を断絶ではなく儀礼的に理解可能な通過として位置づける。讃歌は繰り返し「父祖たち」とヤマ（Yama）を呼び、亡者を正しく祖霊界に据えるとともに、遺された者から不吉を鎮め去り、生活の秩序を回復させる。
