अथर्ववेदस्य अष्टादशं काण्डं वेदस्य महान्त्येष्टिसंहिता; मन्त्रैः हविर्भिः पितृसम्बन्धेन च मृतं जनं मृत्योर्लिमिनलभयात् पितॄणाम् ऋतुसंस्थिते लोके नयति। अस्य चत्वारि सूक्तानि—यानी प्रायः पितृमेध-दाहक्रमेण सम्बध्यन्ते—शरीरस्य विलयम्, अग्नेः संवहनम्, आत्मनः परलोकगमनं च ऋतेन संयोजयन्ति; येन मरणं विच्छेदो न, किन्तु विधिवत् बोध्यः संक्रमणमार्गः भवति। स्तुतयः पुनःपुनः पितॄन् यमं च आह्वयन्ति।

Its purpose is Antyeṣṭi: to ritually guide the departed from death’s liminal danger to the ordered realm of the Pitṛs, while restoring śānti and stability for the living community.
Because they are oriented to offerings and invocations for the Fathers (Pitṛs), structuring the deceased’s transition into ancestorhood and establishing proper relations between descendants and the ancestral world.
