Sukta 9.99
This Pavamāna Soma hymn celebrates Soma in the very act of purification—pressed, flowing, filtered through wool, and prepared as the exhilarating draught for Indra. The poets portray the ritual as a cosmic process: the shining drink is clothed in radiance, directed like a messenger, and seated in the bowls to empower victory, inspiration, and right-ordered strength.
Mantra 1
Mantra 2
Mantra 3
Mantra 4
Mantra 5
Mantra 6
Mantra 7
Mantra 8
The hymn opens with a vivid image of empowering preparation: Soma is armed with ‘manly power’ and clothed in a shining garment by those who magnify him (the poets/priests).
Attention shifts to the technical-sacred process—Soma pouring forth, being purified through the imperishable woolen filter, and being directed like a messenger toward primeval remembrance (pūrva-citti).
Soma’s successful transformation into the most exhilarating draught culminates in his being made ready for Indra—ecstasy disciplined into strength for divine action.
The hymn closes with Soma installed in the bowls for Indra’s drinking, sealing the ritual’s purpose: purified radiance becomes shared power and victorious inspiration.

In the Soma ritual the juice is strained through a woolen filter (vāra/pavitra). The hymn treats this as both a physical purification and a symbol of refining consciousness and speech.
The poets describe purified Soma as carrying the sacrificer’s intention to the gods—directed by the wise like a messenger—so the offering reaches its divine goal and awakens ancient, foundational awareness.
