Pavamāna Soma hymn tradition

Chandas

Unverified without metrical scan.

This Pavamāna Soma hymn celebrates the pressed and purified Soma as it streams through the filter, calling it to surge forth for Indra so that Indra may take in strength and accomplish victorious heroic deeds. Alongside the ritual imagery of stones, chant, and pressing, the hymn opens into a vision of Soma as the giver of ānanda (bliss) and the aspiration toward amṛtatva (immortality). The recurring refrain “indrāyendo pari srava” binds the outer sacrifice to an inner movement of uplift and fulfillment.

Inside Sukta 113

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

An urgent invitation for Indra, the Vṛtra-slayer, to drink Soma in Śaryaṇāvat—Soma is urged to flow powerfully for Indra’s strengthening.

  2. Development

The hymn deepens into the liturgical scene: the brahman-priest speaks the metrical Word (chandas/vāc), the stones magnify Soma, and Soma generates joy while empowering divine action.

  3. Climax

A visionary turn: Soma is linked not only to victory but to the seat of bliss—ānanda, moda, mud, pramud—and to the fulfillment of true desires.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn ends as a prayer for transformation: ‘make me immortal’—Soma’s flow becomes the means of inner elevation, while the refrain continues to anchor everything in offering to Indra.

The deity: Soma Pavamāna, with Indra as principal drinker

  • In the VedaHe is praised as a generator of strength, joy, and victorious impetus, and as a power that elevates the sacrificer toward a higher, deathless state.
  • Cosmic functionMediator of vitality between heaven and earth: Soma’s purified essence energizes Indra’s world-ordering victories (e.g., Vṛtra-slaying) and sustains the sacrificial exchange that renews cosmic harmony (ṛta).
  • Inner significanceThe clarified consciousness-force that, when ‘filtered’ through disciplined speech (chandas/vāc) and intention, becomes bliss (ānanda) and a movement toward wholeness and immortality (amṛta) within the seeker.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a Soma Pavamāna hymn asking the purified Soma to flow strongly for Indra, so Indra gains strength and achieves victory. It also presents Soma as a giver of joy and a path toward immortality.

Because in the Soma ritual, correct metrical recitation and sacred speech are part of how Soma is ‘made great’—the hymn teaches that disciplined, measured speech helps manifest Soma’s uplifting power.

In Vedic terms it points to amṛta—rising beyond decay and fear through Soma’s purified essence. It can mean both a hoped-for divine state and an inner transformation toward enduring wholeness and bliss.
