Sukta 8.96

Devata

Indra (with supporting powers: Uṣas, Āpas/Sindhus)

Chandas

Trishtubh (probable)

This hymn praises Indra as the power who enables a safe “crossing”—from night to dawn, from obstruction to passage—assisted by Uṣas (Dawn) and the nourishing Waters/Rivers (Āpas/Sindhus). It asks Indra to carry the inspired Word (uktha) and to propel the seeker’s understanding like a boat toward the farther shore, culminating in Indra’s Vr̥tra-slaying, skillful, swift-to-manifest help.

Mantra 3

Mantra 4

Mantra 5

Mantra 6

Mantra 7

Mantra 8

Mantra 9

Mantra 10

Mantra 11

Mantra 12

Mantra 13

Mantra 14

Mantra 15

Mantra 16

Mantra 17

Mantra 18

Mantra 19

Mantra 20

Mantra 21

Inside Sukta 96

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Dawn and the Waters prepare the way: Uṣas crosses beyond night, and the Seven Mothers (waters/rivers) stand ready to carry the human being safely across (RV 8.96.1).

  2. Development

The hymn intensifies into a request for Indra to bear the inspired hymn and to propel the seeker’s manīṣā (illumined understanding) like a vessel toward the farther shore, grounding inspiration in true hearing (śruti) (RV 8.96.11).

  3. Climax

Indra’s decisive identity as Vr̥tra-slayer and master of effective works comes to the fore—swiftly born into manifestation and immediately worthy of invocation, he performs many ‘humanly-helpful’ deeds (RV 8.96.21).

  4. Where it settles

The hymn settles into assurance: Indra, delighted like Soma when drunk, becomes a sustaining offering and companionship-strength for the inner allies (sakhis), confirming protection, passage, and inspired capacity.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is celebrated as vṛtrahan (slayer of Vr̥tra), the mighty drinker of Soma, bearer and energizer of the hymn (uktha-vāha), and the one who opens the ways—releasing waters, light, and power for humans.
  • Cosmic functionHe breaks cosmic obstruction, releases the life-giving waters and the dawn-light, and establishes dynamic order by making paths and victories possible.
  • Inner significanceIndra represents the awakened force of will and luminous intelligence that smashes inner inertia and fear, releases the “blocked waters” of vitality, and carries the mind across confusion into clear hearing and inspired understanding.

The seer

  • Kāṇva seer(s) (traditional attribution; specific r̥ṣi uncertain)Kāṇva (Kāṇva-gotra/line of the Kaṇvas; Maṇḍala 8 tradition) · The Kāṇvas are especially known for vivid Indra hymns that blend ritual praise with inner imagery of “crossing,” inspiration (dhī), and the victorious breaking of obstacles.
