Chandas

Tr̥ṣṭubh (explicitly referenced; verse likely in Tr̥ṣṭubh)

This hymn chiefly invokes the Maruts as a mighty, mountain-ranging host who are awakened and strengthened by the poet’s Triṣṭubh praise, bringing vigor, protection, and victorious momentum. The Kaṇva-inspired formulations are presented as nourishing “streams” (iṣaḥ) like ghee, meant to swell the Maruts’ power and, through them, the sacrificer’s prosperity. The closing movement turns toward Agni as the ancient, radiant knower whose flame-sun sets the powers in their stations, sealing the rite with luminous order.

Inside Sukta 7

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The poet “pours forth” Triṣṭubh nourishment for the Maruts; they are envisioned shining and ruling across mountain ranges (RV 8.7.1).

  2. Development

Praise becomes an energizing offering: the Maruts’ streams of strength are compared to ghee, swelling through Kāṇva-inspired formulations and drawing the gods nearer to the sacrifice (cf. RV 8.7.19).

  3. Climax

The hymn’s power peaks in the sense of ‘vardhana’ (increase): mantra and offering jointly amplify the Maruts’ might, turning divine force into protection and prosperity for the worshiper.

  4. Where it settles

Agni appears as the ancient, radiant knower—sunlike through flame—by whose rays the powers ‘stand forth’ and take their stations, concluding with luminous stability (RV 8.7.36).

The deity: Maruts

  • In the VedaThey come with tumult and radiance, strengthening allies, stirring the airs, and magnifying the sacrificial impulse.
  • Cosmic functionThey embody the dynamic forces of the atmosphere: winds, thunder, and the mobilizing energy that breaks stagnation, clears pathways, and supports Indra’s victorious order in the world.
  • Inner significancePsychologically, the Maruts signify the surge of inspired energies—courage, disciplined ardor, and collective force—that carry the mind from inertia to clarity and effective action when aligned with mantra and right intention.

The seer

  • Kāṇva (Kaṇva lineage seer; specific individual not explicitly fixed for RV 8.7)Kaṇva gotra / Kāṇva family (Mandala 8) · The Kāṇvas are renowned in the Rig Veda for energetic, martial yet devotional hymns—especially to Indra and the Maruts—marked by strong Triṣṭubh cadence and vivid storm-and-mountain imagery.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Maruts are a host of storm and wind powers—radiant, swift, and loud—invoked to bring strength, protection, and forward-moving energy to the sacrificer.

Triṣṭubh is the hymn’s driving meter, and the poet treats the mantra itself as a real offering—an iṣ (nourishing force) that feeds and increases the Maruts’ power.

Agni is the ritual foundation: his flame is described as sunlike, and his radiance ‘sets’ the powers in their proper stations, concluding the invocation with stability and order.
