Mantra 20

Mantra 22

Mantra 23

Inside Sukta 53

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

An urgent invitation: Indra and Parvata are called to arrive on a vast chariot bearing nourishing energies and to enjoy offerings in the sacrifice (RV 3.53.1).

  2. Development

The hymn amplifies Indra’s might and the efficacy of crafted brahman—speech made by the Viśvāmitras to empower the vajrin—linking divine exhilaration with human success and right giving.

  3. Climax

The explicit assertion of mantra-power: the Viśvāmitras ‘have fashioned the brahman for Indra’ and request the resulting surādhas (RV 3.53.13), presenting sacred speech as the turning point of fortune.

  4. Where it settles

It closes by affirming the Bharatas’ disciplined resilience and their drive toward victory in battle, asking Indra to uphold this momentum and prevent decline (RV 3.53.24).

The deity: Indra–Parvata

  • In the VedaTogether they are invited to the adhvara (sacrificial session) to accept havis and to be intensified by the poets’ songs.
  • Cosmic functionThey stabilize and energize the cosmic order by breaking obstructions, releasing life-giving abundance, and granting victory and protection to the community aligned with ṛta through sacrifice.
  • Inner significanceIndra represents decisive will, courage, and the power to overcome inner resistance; Parvata symbolizes steadiness, grounded force, and the ‘mass’ of endurance. Their pairing suggests victorious energy guided by firmness—strength that is both dynamic and stable.

The seer

  • Viśvāmitra GāthinaViśvāmitra (Gāthina) gotra; seer-family of the Viśvāmitras · A royal-turned-seer celebrated for forging potent brahman (sacred speech) that empowers Indra and for his association with the Bharatas and their victories; later tradition also links him with the Gāyatrī mantra.

Frequently Asked Questions

Indra is the thunderbolt-wielding warrior god who grants victory and abundance. Parvata is his companion here, associated with firm, mountain-like strength and support, joining Indra in receiving offerings and giving aid.

Here brahman means a powerful, well-formed sacred utterance (mantra/poetic formulation). The hymn says the Viśvāmitras shape this speech to energize Indra’s action, and they ask that this act bring prosperity and good giving to the worshippers.

The hymn connects the ritual to real communal aims: protection, endurance, and victory in contest. By praising the Bharatas’ “non-decline,” it frames Indra’s help as sustaining their strength and success in battle and public competition.
