Sukta 40

Sukta 10.40

This hymn is an urgent, affectionate invocation to the Aśvinau, the dawn-riding divine physicians, asking where they are and who is receiving them today. It praises their swift chariot, their clan-by-clan beneficence, and their famed rescues—relief to the weak, protection of the vulnerable, and the opening of obstructed “enclosures” so prosperity and healing can flow. The poet’s purpose is to attract the Twins to the sacrificer’s house at the proper time (dawn) and secure peace, well-being, and successful passage through life’s transitions.

Inside Sukta 40

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A searching call: who will properly welcome the Aśvins’ moving chariot and radiant power for ‘suvitā’ (happy going)?

  2. Development

Their regular, pervasive visitation is affirmed—arriving at dawn, moving among all clans—followed by praise of their concrete interventions: aiding the weak, protecting the worshipper, and opening obstructed enclosures for gain and release.

  3. Climax

The rescue motif peaks in the image of the ‘thunderous enclosure’ being opened—an emblem of impediments broken and multiple streams/forces released for seekers.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn returns to immediacy: where are they delighting today, and whose house have they chosen—seer or sacrificer—pressing the invitation so their grace turns toward the reciter’s home.

The deity: Aśvinau

  • In the VedaThey are celebrated as healers, rescuers, and bringers of safe passage, visiting ‘clan by clan’ and arriving at the liminal hours of morning and evening.
  • Cosmic functionThey mediate the transition from night to day, restore vitality, remove impediments, and set in motion auspicious journeys—cosmic and human—by reopening what is closed and renewing life-forces.
  • Inner significanceThey symbolize the awakening powers that heal and integrate: timely help, restoration after depletion, clarity at the threshold of a new beginning, and the ‘right arrival’ of insight and energy when called with sincerity.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Aśvinau are twin Vedic deities who arrive at dawn in a radiant chariot. They are praised as swift helpers, healers, and protectors who respond quickly to human prayers.

It asks the Aśvins to come to the worshipper, bring peace of mind, protect life and household, and remove obstacles so one can move forward with ‘suvitā’—a good and safe passage.

Because the hymn is an invitation. By asking where they are and whose house they have chosen, the poet intensifies the call so the Aśvins turn their attention and blessings toward the reciter’s home and ritual.
