Sukta 10.39

Chandas

Jagati (probable for many Aśvin hymns; exact metrical confirmation needed)

This hymn invokes the Aśvins’ swift, all-moving chariot to arrive at night and at dawn, responding to the sacrificer’s call as intimately as a father is called by name. It praises their hallmark deeds of rescue and restoration—renewing youth, saving devotees from peril, and restoring mobility and wholeness—while presenting the hymn itself as a carefully crafted offering meant to delight and draw them near.

Mantra 1

Mantra 2

Mantra 3

Mantra 4

Mantra 5

Mantra 6

Mantra 7

Mantra 8

Mantra 9

Mantra 10

Mantra 11

Mantra 12

Mantra 13

Mantra 14

Inside Sukta 39

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct invitation to the Aśvins’ ever-moving, well-guided chariot, called at night and at dawn with intimate confidence.

  2. Development

The hymn expands into praise of their characteristic benevolence—quick response, protection, and the power to renew life-force and capability.

  3. Climax

A concentrated remembrance of signature miracles: restoring youth to the aged, rescuing Vandana from devouring fate, and enabling Viśpalā to move again.

  4. Where it settles

The poets ‘fashion’ the hymn like a finely built chariot and adorn it like a beloved, offering it as a lasting, cherished gift to secure the twins’ continued presence.

The deity: Aśvins, the Divine Twins

  • In the VedaThey are famed as healers and rescuers who restore youth, save from danger, and grant strength, movement, and well-being to devotees.
  • Cosmic functionThey mediate the transition between darkness and light (night to dawn), bringing renewal, healing, and auspicious beginnings; as liminal deities they ‘arrive first’ to open the way for other divine powers and for the day’s sacrificial order.
  • Inner significanceThey symbolize the twin forces of restoration and forward motion in the human being—reviving vitality, repairing what is broken, and helping consciousness ‘move on’ from inertia, fear, or decline into clarity and capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Aśvins (Nāsatyā) are divine twin horsemen in the Rig Veda, famous for arriving quickly in their chariot at dawn and for healing, rescuing, and restoring strength to devotees.

The hymn asks the Aśvins to come promptly at the night–dawn transition and to grant renewal—health, youthfulness, safe deliverance from danger, and the power to move forward in life.

These are poetic metaphors for composing the hymn itself: the poets ‘build’ and ‘polish’ their praise as a perfected offering, meant to attract the Aśvins as surely as a fine chariot or beautiful adornment draws attention.
