RV 3.62 is a praise-hymn that chiefly invokes the paired sovereignty and power of Indra–Varuṇa—victory-force joined to moral-cosmic order—to protect allies, overcome hostile pressures, and restore the gods’ renowned “glory” that brings fullness to the community. Within this sukta appears the celebrated Gāyatrī mantra (3.62.10) to Savitṛ, turning the hymn inward toward illumination of the intellect, so outer triumph and inner right-guidance are yoked together under Ṛta (truth-order).

Mantra 1

इमा उ वां भृमयो मन्यमाना युवावते न तुज्या अभूवन् । क्व त्यदिन्द्रावरुणा यशो वां येन स्मा सिनं भरथः सखिभ्यः ॥

These restless forces, thinking themselves strong, could not truly assail you who are ever young in power. Where is that glory of you, O Indra–Varuṇa, by which you used to bring the winning fullness to your comrades within us?

Mantra 2

अयमु वां पुरुतमो रयीयञ्छश्वत्तममवसे जोहवीति । सजोषाविन्द्रावरुणा मरुद्भिर्दिवा पृथिव्या शृणुतं हवं मे ॥

This (seer) calls to you two most abundantly for the riches that endure, for your help that lasts. Together with the Maruts, O Indra–Varuṇa, from Heaven and from Earth, hear my call.

Mantra 3

अस्मे तदिन्द्रावरुणा वसु ष्यादस्मे रयिर्मरुतः सर्ववीरः । अस्मान्वरूत्रीः शरणैरवन्त्वस्मान्होत्रा भारती दक्षिणाभिः ॥

In us may that good be established, O Indra–Varuṇa; in us may the plenitude be, O Maruts, rich in all heroic powers. May the Protectresses guard us with shelters; may Bhāratī the priestly power uphold us with her gifts of right offering.

Mantra 4

बृहस्पते जुषस्व नो हव्यानि विश्वदेव्य । रास्व रत्नानि दाशुषे ॥

O Bṛhaspati, delight in our offerings, O power belonging to all the gods; grant the treasures to the giver—those luminous riches that perfect the being.

Mantra 5

शुचिमर्कैर्बृहस्पतिमध्वरेषु नमस्यत । अनाम्योज आ चके ॥

With radiant hymns adore Bṛhaspati in the offerings; for he has made ready an unbending strength—an energy that does not fail.

Mantra 6

वृषभं चर्षणीनां विश्वरूपमदाभ्यम् । बृहस्पतिं वरेण्यम् ॥

Bṛhaspati, the Bull of the peoples, of universal form and not to be deceived—him we choose as the supreme desirable power.

Mantra 7

इयं ते पूषन्नाघृणे सुष्टुतिर्देव नव्यसी । अस्माभिस्तुभ्यं शस्यते ॥

This new and well-fashioned praise is spoken to you by us, O Pūṣan the glowing one—may it guide our journey inward and outward.

Mantra 8

तां जुषस्व गिरं मम वाजयन्तीमवा धियम् । वधूयुरिव योषणाम् ॥

Accept that word of mine that brings the plenitude of force; descend also into the thought—like a bridegroom drawn to the maiden—so the mind may be joined to the guiding light.

Mantra 9

यो विश्वाभि विपश्यति भुवना सं च पश्यति । स नः पूषाविता भुवत् ॥

He who looks with awakened vision upon all things and gathers into a single seeing the worlds and their movements—may that Pūṣan become for us the Protector and Guide.

Mantra 10

तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि । धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥

That most choiceful splendor of Savitṛ, the divine Flame of illumination, we hold in our thought and meditation; may he impel and set forward our insights and discernments.

Mantra 11

देवस्य सवितुर्वयं वाजयन्तः पुरंध्या । भगस्य रातिमीमहे ॥

We, pressing forward the plenitudes of force, with a thought that builds the inner city, seek the gift of Bhaga from the god Savitṛ.

Mantra 12

देवं नरः सवितारं विप्रा यज्ञैः सुवृक्तिभिः । नमस्यन्ति धियेषिताः ॥

Men of the seeking mind, the illumined ones, worship Savitṛ the divine with sacrifice and well-shaped word; driven by the inspired intelligence they bow in adoration.

Mantra 13

सोमो जिगाति गातुविद्देवानामेति निष्कृतम् । ऋतस्य योनिमासदम् ॥

Soma moves on, knower of the paths; he goes to the gods’ appointed opening, taking his seat in the womb of Ṛta—his native foundation in the Truth-Order.

Mantra 14

सोमो अस्मभ्यं द्विपदे चतुष्पदे च पशवे । अनमीवा इषस्करत् ॥

May Soma for us, for the two-footed and the four-footed, for all the powers of life, make the currents of nourishment free from hurt and division.

Mantra 15

अस्माकमायुर्वर्धयन्नभिमातीः सहमानः । सोमः सधस्थमासदत् ॥

Increasing our life-force, overcoming the hostile pressures, Soma has taken his seat in the common foundation—established in us as a stable support.

Mantra 16

आ नो मित्रावरुणा घृतैर्गव्यूतिमुक्षतम् । मध्वा रजांसि सुक्रतू ॥

Come to us, Mitra and Varuṇa; with the clarified light pour out for us the path that leads to the Rays. With honeyed sweetness fill the spaces, O you of perfect workings.

Mantra 17

उरुशंसा नमोवृधा मह्ना दक्षस्य राजथः । द्राघिष्ठाभिः शुचिव्रता ॥

Wide in your praise, increasers of the soul’s reverence, by greatness you rule through Dakṣa; with your far-reaching powers, O pure in your law of working.

Mantra 18

गृणाना जमदग्निना योनावृतस्य सीदतम् । पातं सोममृतावृधा ॥

Praised by Jamadagni, sit you in the womb of Ṛta; drink the Soma, O increasers of the Truth-Order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because the hymn seeks both kinds of divine help at once: Indra’s power to overcome obstacles and Varuṇa’s guardianship of Ṛta (truth, right order). Together they represent strength guided by law and conscience.

Vedic sūktas can include a key verse to another deity when it serves the hymn’s purpose. Here Savitṛ’s light is invoked to purify and propel the intellect, so outer success and inner right-guidance remain aligned with Ṛta.

Recite a short selection: begin with 3.62.1 as a prayer for protection and renewed strength, then chant 3.62.10 for clarity of mind, and end with a closing verse like 3.62.18 as an offering of gratitude and commitment to truth.
