What the texts say
In the Bhagavata Purana, Vamana is Lord Vishnu appearing as a dwarf, the son of Aditi, who begged King Bali, son of Virocana, for three paces of land yet took all three worlds. Bhagavatam 5.24.18 A prayer in the Bhagavata Purana recalls that as Trivikrama, one of his names, Vamana took three mighty steps and captured Bali along with his kingdom. Bhagavatam 11.6.13 The same prayer says that he raised his leg to break the shell of the universe, letting the holy Ganges flow down. Bhagavatam 11.6.13 The same Purana adds that, pleased with Bali, Vishnu returned his kingdom, and Bali lives on in Sutala, a lower world. Bhagavatam 5.24.18 Protected by Vamana, Indra, king of heaven, regained his rule of the three worlds. Bhagavatam 8.23.25
