What the texts say
In the Ramayana, Rama is Vishnu, born in the human world after the gods entreated him to slay the arrogant rakshasa Ravana. Ramayana 2.1.7, 6.114.14 In the epic's opening summary, Rama is Dasharatha's eldest son, devoted to the people's welfare, whom the king wished to make heir-apparent. Ramayana 1.1.19 Kaikeyi, a queen granted boons earlier, demanded his exile, and Rama went to the forest, keeping his pledged word at his father's command. Ramayana 1.1.21, 1.1.24 Sita, his beloved, and Lakshmana, who followed and served him in the forest, went with him on foot. Ramayana 2.45.18, 2.48.8, 3.49.35 Ravana then seized Sita, who cried out to Rama. Ramayana 3.49.21 Crossing the bridge built in the ocean to the city of Lanka, Rama slew Ravana in battle and recovered Sita. Ramayana 6.25.4, 1.1.81 In the Sri Ramcharitmanas, Rama returns to his own city, Ayodhya, with Sita and becomes king. Ramcharitmanas 1.3.51
