Sukta 9.106

Devata

Indra (with Soma as the vehicle-offering)

Inside Sukta 106

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens by sending the pressed Soma-drops toward Indra, portraying them as obedient, sun-finding powers borne by tawny energies (RV 9.106.1).

  2. Development

It develops the image of Soma as an ascending, surging stream whose drops intensify Indra’s sacred ecstasy and are drunk by the gods for immortality (e.g., RV 9.106.8).

  3. Climax

The peak is the recognition that Soma’s purified flow is not merely drink but amṛta—divine delight transmuted into deathless substance that empowers cosmic victory.

  4. Where it settles

It resolves with the command/vision of Soma purifying itself, releasing honeyed currents, and moving around the filter from every side—universal clarification and completion of the rite (RV 9.106.14).

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is the vṛṣan (Bull), the foremost heroic power who is gladdened by Soma and made mighty for conquest; Soma is the living, pressed, clarified drink that ‘goes to Indra’ and becomes amṛta for the gods.
  • Cosmic functionIndra represents the victorious force that breaks obstruction and releases light and abundance; Soma is the energizing, clarifying essence that feeds the gods and sustains the cosmic order through sacrifice.
  • Inner significanceIndra signifies awakened will, courage, and decisive spiritual force; Soma signifies purified delight and inspired consciousness that intoxicates (in a sacred sense) the inner warrior and opens the ‘sun-world’ of clarity.

The seer

  • Anukta (attribution uncertain in the tradition for RV 9.106)This hymn is part of the Soma-Pavamāna corpus where many sūktas are transmitted without a firmly fixed seer-name; the focus is the liturgical voice of the Soma-pressing rite rather than a personal rishi profile.
