Sukta 90

Sukta 7.90

Rishi

Vasiṣṭha (traditional for RV 7.90)

Devata

Vāyu (often paired with Indra in soma setting; dual vām suggests a dyad)

Chandas

Jagatī (likely; long pādas typical of Jagatī in soma invitations)

Inside Sukta 90

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens with the rush of pure, honey-rich Soma offerings toward the invited deities, urging Vāyu to come swiftly with his yoked teams and drink for exhilaration.

  2. Development

The poet broadens the frame from ritual action to cosmic correspondences: dawn rises, the wide light is discovered, hidden luminous spaces are opened, and the Waters flow from the heights—signs that the rite participates in the world-order.

  3. Climax

The decisive appeal is the active calling of Indra–Vāyu with well-fashioned praise for force (vāja), self-increase, and victorious potency—gods arriving to empower the sacrificer.

  4. Where it settles

The sukta resolves in a sustained prayer for protection and well-being: may Indra–Vāyu guard the worshippers always with svasti and sustaining powers.

The deity: Vāyu

  • In the VedaVāyu is the swift-moving life-breath and wind, drawn by yoked teams (niyut), first to taste the Soma, and a ready hearer of the invitation at the pressing. In this sukta he is invoked with the language of quick approach, exhilaration (mada), and the purity and sweetness of the libation.
  • Cosmic functionHe sets air and movement in motion, circulates vitality between heaven and earth, and mediates the gods’ presence through the flowing current of prāṇa-like power; with Indra he supports victorious force and the right distribution of Soma’s might.
  • Inner significanceVāyu signifies the inward breath and the energizing current that carries aspiration toward clarity; as Indra–Vāyu, the pair symbolizes power guided by life-force—strength that becomes effective when yoked to disciplined invocation and right offering.

The seer

  • VasiṣṭhaVasiṣṭha gotra (one of the Saptaṛṣi lineages) · Foremost seer of Mandala 7, famed as a royal purohita and master of brahman (effective sacred speech), closely associated with the Bharatas/Tr̥tsus and with hymns of protection and right order (ṛta).

  • Yoked teams/niyut
  • First drinker of Soma in many Soma rites
  • Bringer of exhilaration (mada) and expansion

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare the Soma: press, strain, and mix to make it ‘honey-rich’ (madhumant).
  • Adhvaryu sets the offering and recites the invitation verses calling Vāyu (and Indra–Vāyu) to come with niyut.
  • Offer Soma into the appropriate cups (graha) and present it for the deity’s ‘drinking’ through mantra.
  • Recite praise that links the rite with cosmic opening—dawn’s widening light and the Waters’ flow—affirming ṛta.
  • Conclude with a protective petition (svasti) for ongoing guarding and well-being.

Offerings

  • Pressed Soma (suta andhas)
  • Soma-libation in grahas for Vāyu / Indra–Vāyu
  • Accompanying ghee/oblations customary to Soma service (contextual)

Frequently Asked Questions

Vāyu is central, and the hymn often addresses the paired form Indra–Vāyu, especially in the Soma-pressing setting.

It invites them to come quickly to the sacrifice, drink the pressed Soma, and grant strength, increase, fame, and protection to the worshippers.

These images show that the ritual is aligned with cosmic order: dawn reveals the wide light, hidden radiance is opened, and the waters flow—signs of renewal and right unfolding (ṛta).
