Inside Sukta 14

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Agni is स्थापित (made to stand) as the joyful Hotṛ in the gatherings—true, sacrificial, and supremely wise in rite.

  2. Development

His cosmic form is unfolded: son of Force, lightning-charioted, flame-haired, spreading might upon earth; then his praise is echoed by Mitra, Varuṇa, and the Maruts.

  3. Climax

Agni’s flame stands and ‘widens’ the human worlds like the Sun—an image of expansion, order, and life-giving radiance.

  4. Where it settles

The sacrificers dedicate their works to him and ask him to know all rightly and to taste the offering’s sweetness in full, sealing reciprocity between human rite and divine acceptance.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the glad, truthful Hotṛ—kavitama (most seer-wise) and vedhāḥ (skilled disposer)—whose flaming hair and lightning-like movement mark him as the living fire present in rite and world.
  • Cosmic functionMediator between gods and mortals: he carries offerings, establishes ṛta in the sacrifice, kindles prosperity, and expands the human world (kṣitīḥ) with solar-like widening power.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened will and luminous intelligence (inner fire) that makes aspiration effective—transforming offerings (effort, speech, oblation) into clarity, strength, and right action.

The seer

  • Viśvāmitra GāthinaGāthina (Kauśika tradition in later accounts) · A pre-eminent seer of the Rig Veda’s third maṇḍala, celebrated for visionary hymns to Agni and Indra and for integrating royal power with ṛṣi-insight in Vedic memory.

Frequently Asked Questions

It establishes Agni as the central priestly fire (Hotṛ) who makes the sacrifice effective and spreads protective, life-giving power across the human world.

These epithets stress Agni’s dynamic energy: he is born of power (sahas) and moves with swift, striking brilliance like lightning, carrying offerings upward.

At the start of a small fire offering or lamp-lighting, recite select verses to invite Agni, offer a little ghee (or symbolic offering), and conclude by dedicating your actions to clarity and right order (ṛta).
