Inside Sukta 98

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Bṛhaspati is summoned as the decisive divine power, capable of operating through multiple deity-forms, with the explicit aim: awaken Parjanya to pour rain and increase.

  2. Development

The hymn moves from invocation to narrative legitimation: Devāpi’s compassionate priesthood for Śaṃtanū and the gift of rain-winning speech from Bṛhaspati, showing how mantra becomes effective action.

  3. Climax

Bṛhaspati’s granting of vāc (the ‘deva-heard’ rain-winning word) marks the turning point—speech becomes the lever that releases the rains.

  4. Where it settles

The closing petitions turn protective and elemental: Agni is asked to drive away harms and to release the abundance of waters from the great ocean and wide heaven into immediate reach.

The deity: Bṛhaspati

  • In the VedaBṛhaspati is the lord of brahman (sacred formulation), the inspirer and guardian of vāc, and the priestly power that makes hymns efficacious—able to assume or coordinate functions of Mitra, Varuṇa, Pūṣan and the host deities. He is invoked as the force that turns correct speech into real-world order, including the opening of rain and prosperity.
  • Cosmic functionCosmic priest and counselor who stabilizes ṛta (order) through mantra, guiding divine cooperation and releasing boons such as rain, fertility, and protection.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened intelligence of right speech—discernment that aligns intention, word, and action; when vāc is purified and steady, inner ‘drought’ ends and life-force circulates again.

The seer

  • Devāpi ĀrṣṭiṣeṇaĀrṣṭiṣeṇa (descendant of Ṛṣṭiṣeṇa); associated in later tradition with the Kuru royal line of Śaṃtanū · Remembered as a royal-sage/priest whose consecrated speech and rite restore rainfall during drought; emblematic of Bṛhaspati’s bestowal of vāc (effective sacred utterance).

  • Priestly mediation between humans and gods

  • Opener of boons: rain, fertility, increase

Also by this seer

  • RV 10.98 (rain-invocation and Devāpi–Śaṃtanū narrative)
  • Tradition links Devāpi with rain-making rites and priestly authority in Itihāsa-Purāṇa reception (later narrative elaborations)

The rite, step by step

  • Establish the altar and kindle Agni; set intention for rainfall and welfare of people/land.
  • Invoke Bṛhaspati as the presiding power of mantra and priestly speech; request his presence ‘facing’ the invocation.
  • Name allied deities (Mitra, Varuṇa, Pūṣan, Ādityas, Vasus, Maruts) to harmonize cosmic forces supportive of rain.
  • Recite the rain-winning formulas (vṛṣṭi-vanī vāc) with focus on correctness of accent and cadence (Triṣṭubh).
  • Offer oblations into Agni while requesting Parjanya to ‘pour’—rain as fertility and increase.
  • Conclude with protective petitions to Agni: removal of obstacles/afflictions and release of the ‘plenitude of waters’ from heaven and ocean into the local realm.

Offerings

  • Ghee (ājya) into Agni
  • Soma (where part of a Soma-sacrifice context)
  • Grain/food offerings (anna, puroḍāśa) appropriate to local śrauta/gṛhya adaptation
  • Water-libations and sprinkling (prokṣaṇa) as symbolic invitation of rain
