Sukta 24

Sukta 1.24

Rishi

Medhātithi Kāṇva (traditional for RV 1.24)

Devata

Aditi (with an open interrogative seeking the right immortal); the hymn is closely associated with Varuṇa in RV 1.24 overall

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (probable for RV 1.24 opening verses; exact meter should be confirmed against pada counts)

Inside Sukta 24

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A searching, humble interrogation: whose immortal Name should be cherished, and who will restore the worshipper to ‘vast Aditi’ so one may behold Father and Mother (the sustaining origins).

  2. Development

Praise shifts to Varuṇa’s kingship and ṛta: the deity’s cosmic workmanship is displayed in the ordered movement of the Sun and the establishing of firm supports even where none seem possible—an image of invisible law made reliable.

  3. Climax

A direct penitential appeal: Varuṇa’s pāśa is acknowledged as real and binding, yet the worshipper asks for a threefold loosening—highest, lowest, and middle—signaling complete release from constraint and fault.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn closes by re-entering the Āditya’s vrata (law/vow) as ‘anāgas’ (without stain) and by ‘belonging to Aditi’—ending not in dread but in restored spaciousness and lawful freedom.

The deity: Aditi / Varuṇa

  • In the VedaAditi is the ‘unbounded’ mother of the Ādityas, invoked as vastness, shelter, and freedom from constraint; Varuṇa is the royal Āditya who upholds ṛta, sees all, and binds transgression with his pāśa (noose). In this hymn, the quest for the right immortal’s Name resolves into Varuṇa’s sovereign order and Aditi as the desired state of release.
  • Cosmic functionVaruṇa maintains ṛta—stability of heaven and earth, the lawful course of the Sun, and the moral-cosmic governance that keeps the world coherent; Aditi represents the limitless expanse that ‘holds’ beings and restores them to wholeness.
  • Inner significanceVaruṇa signifies conscience, truthfulness, and the inner pressure of moral law; his ‘nooses’ mirror guilt, fear, and constriction that follow wrongdoing. Aditi signifies inner spaciousness—release from self-binding patterns—returning to trust, clarity, and a life aligned with truth.

The seer

  • Medhātithi KāṇvaKāṇva (Kanva-gotra) · A prominent Kāṇva seer associated with early Mandala 1 hymns, noted for devotional, interrogative openings and for linking cosmic law (ṛta) with ethical self-scrutiny.

Famous verses

kasya nūnaṃ katamasyāmṛtānām

uruṃ hi rājā varuṇaś cakāra

Attributes of the deity

  • Ṛta (cosmic order) upholder
  • Royal sovereignty (rājā) and all-seeing oversight
  • Pāśa (binding) and kṣamā (release/forgiveness)
  • Aditi as vastness, protection, and freedom
  • Restoration to blamelessness (anāgas)
  • Solar path-setting as sign of cosmic governance

Also by this seer

  • Traditionally credited with a cluster of Kāṇva hymns in Rigveda Mandala 1 (Kāṇva-collection)
  • Associated in later tradition with reflective hymns that probe the deity’s identity and the right mode of praise (stuti)

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare the fire (agni) and seat; perform ācamana and a brief sankalpa for truth (satya) and ṛta-alignment.
  • Invoke the Ādityas with a short opening (e.g., ‘ā no mitrāvaruṇā…’ style invocation) and then recite RV 1.24 in full, with special emphasis on the opening question (1.24.1), the cosmic governance verses (mid-hymn), and the unbinding plea (1.24.15).
  • Offer oblations at key pauses (end of selected verses), contemplating Varuṇa’s law as clarity rather than fear, and Aditi as wide refuge.
  • Conclude with a prayer of restitution: resolve to truthful speech, right measure, and repaired relationships; end with śānti-style closing and a final oblation.

Offerings

  • Ghee (ājya) into the fire
  • Water libation (āpaḥ) as a Varuṇa-associated offering
  • Optional: milk or soma-substitute in later practice; simple barley cakes where customary

Frequently Asked Questions

It opens with Aditi and an open question about the right immortal, but much of the hymn’s praise and the final plea focus on Varuṇa as the Āditya who governs ṛta. Aditi appears as the ‘wide’ goal-state of release and protection.

It symbolizes the binding force of moral and cosmic law: when one violates ṛta (truth, right measure), one feels constrained—by fear, guilt, or misfortune. The prayer asks Varuṇa to loosen these bonds so the person can return to a blameless life.

It can be recited as a truth-alignment prayer: acknowledge mistakes, ask for clarity and release from harmful patterns, and renew a commitment to honest speech and right action. Many choose dusk/evening for this recitation, reflecting Varuṇa’s contemplative mood.
