Sukta 7.1
आ यस्ते अग्न इधते अनीकं वसिष्ठ शुक्र दीदिवः पावक । उतो न एभिः स्तवथैरिह स्याः ॥
ā yás té agne idháte anī́kaṃ vásiṣṭha śúkra dī́di-vaḥ pā́vaka | utó na ebhíḥ staváthair ihá syāḥ ||
アグニよ、人が汝の輝く力の先鋒を燃え立たせるとき——最も堅固にして、清らかに輝き、常に光を放つ浄化者よ——このわれらの讃歌によって、ここにわれらと共に在れ。
When the worshipper kindles Agni’s “front/face” (anīka) — his shining, ever-luminous purifying flame — Agni is asked to come here by these praises and be present in the rite.
When the seeker ignites the foremost edge of the Divine Will (Agni) in the front of the consciousness (anīka as the “face” of awareness), the steady luminous force begins to purify the nature. The mantra is an invocation for Agni to enter the inner field of becoming (our life-process) and actively work as the priest of transformation through the power of affirmed aspiration (stavatha).
Spiritual progress begins when aspiration becomes a living flame in the forefront of awareness; then the purifying intelligence-will descends into the present moment and reshapes the whole becoming.
Agni-kindling, Invocation for presence, Purification and illumination, Inner sacrifice (adhyātma-yajña)
Vasiṣṭhas—priest-seers of stable illumination; hymns often emphasize Agni as the sure guide and purifier of the path.
Vasiṣṭha’s voice is marked by steadiness (sthiti) and right ordering: Agni is invoked not merely for outer rite but as the inner priest who establishes harmony, clarity, and victorious progression.
Mediator between human and divine; carrier of offerings; awakener of dawn-like clarity; establisher of ṛta through luminous action.
The conscious will that kindles aspiration, purifies motives, and leads the sacrifice of ego-nature into a wider truth-consciousness.
Agni-kindling and invitatory praise in soma-related or general śrauta offerings

4 pādas × ~11 syllables
Forward-driving, declarative cadence suited to invocation and establishment.
Builds inner heat and resolve; the rhythm carries the call ‘ā…iha’ as a decisive descent of force into the present.
Agni-invocation within household and śrauta settings; especially kindling/establishing the fire (āhavanīya orientation), and general use as opening/strengthening formula in adhvara.
At the opening/invocation when Agni is to be made present and active as hotṛ/priest
Kindling the fire; recitation to invite Agni to the seat and to carry offerings
Use as a short pre-meditation invocation: ‘kindle the flame in the forefront’; recite before japa or breath practice to establish purity and presence.
idhate < √indh/edh ‘to kindle, blaze, increase’; anīka ‘face/front’ (from a root sense of ‘point/forepart’, the leading manifestation); śukra ‘bright/pure’ (semantic field: clarity, luminous force); pāvaka < √pū ‘to purify/cleanse’; stavatha ‘act of praising’ related to √stu ‘to praise’; syāḥ optative of √as ‘to be’, expressing desired presence in the adhvara (inner/ritual action).
Ṛta (right order established by awakened will), tapas (inner heat as transformative force), śuddhi (purification as prerequisite for truth)
Agni is invoked as the establisher of right movement in the becoming—order through purification.
Brightness (śukra/dīdivaḥ) signifies truth-conscious clarity entering the mind-life.
Descent of luminous force into the field of becoming; the ‘kindled front’ as the first formation of a higher order in nature.
Proto-Vedāntic / Integral (Aurobindonian) reading: Agni as evolving conscious-force guiding manifestation.
dawn/early kindling (suggested by luminous epithets)
Fire = awakened will; light = clarified intelligence; purification = progressive removal of obscurity in mind and vital.
Kindle the ‘front flame’ in the heart-to-brow axis: invite the will-to-truth to take the lead in thoughts and actions.
Anāhata to Ājñā (heart aspiration rising to frontal clarity)
Gentle 4-4 breathing (inhale ‘ā’, exhale ‘iha’) while feeling the descent of a calm fire in the chest and forehead.
Collected, luminous attention; readiness for inner work.
Recite 7 or 11 times before practice; after each recitation pause and sense Agni ‘present here’—as a quiet, bright pressure guiding the next step.
Mixed udātta/anudātta with svarita on dependent accents (follow śākhā tradition; key lifts on vocatives like ‘agne’ and bright epithets).
Sustain the udātta on ‘ā’, ‘agne’, and the luminous qualifiers; let the cadence fall gently on ‘iha syāḥ’.
agne: pronounce ‘g’ hard; ‘e’ long-ish in Vedic recitation, idhate: clear dental ‘dh’ (aspirated), not retroflex, anīkam: long ‘ī’; nasal ‘m’ audible, dīdivaḥ: long ‘ī’; articulate the repeated ‘di’ cleanly, pāvaka: long ‘ā’; ‘v’ as soft labio-dental
Bright, steady, inviting; avoid haste—let ‘ā…iha’ feel like a descent.
