Inside Sukta 16

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A reverent call to Agni as Ūrjaḥ Napāt—beloved, most discerning, and the immortal messenger who rightly conducts the offering (RV 7.16.1).

  2. Development

Agni is celebrated as the power that makes the rite ‘well-performed’ and as the center where inspired seers and generous leaders find favor, widening prosperity and luminous ‘pastures’ (RV 7.16.7).

  3. Climax

Agni’s priestly identity is affirmed: the gods themselves fashioned him as the illumined Hotṛ and Vahni of the adhvara—thereby guaranteeing the efficacy of the sacrifice.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn closes by asking Agni to place treasure and heroic force (ratna, suvīrya) in the sacrificer and the people who offer, grounding spiritual illumination in concrete well-being (RV 7.16.12).

The seer

  • VasiṣṭhaVasiṣṭha gotra (Vasiṣṭha family; chief seer of Mandala 7) · Foremost among the Ṛgvedic seers; composer of much of Mandala 7 and celebrated as a paradigmatic Brahmarṣi whose hymns unite ritual precision with inner illumination, especially in Agni- and Varuṇa-centered praise.
