How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Agni is approached as the closest support; the worshippers are urged to place the oblation into his mouth.

  2. Development

Agni’s sustaining presence is extended across time—nights and dawns—so that the community becomes true bearers and kindlers of sacred fire and strength.

  3. Climax

The hymn peaks in the request for continuous illumination and heroic vitality (suvīra), portraying Agni as companion in striving and inner ignition.

It resolves in a protective sealing: Agni is asked to guard from aṃhas and from the ill-wisher, by day and by night, as the unfailing protector.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the bright, bountiful fire-principle—born in kindling, dwelling in the home and altar, and receiving offerings in his mouth as the divine messenger (hotṛ/dūta). He is praised as near-at-hand (nediṣṭha), unfailing (adābhya), and as one who illumines both night and dawn.
  • Cosmic functionMediator between humans and gods: he carries oblations upward, maintains ṛta through sacrificial order, and manifests as light and warmth that sustains life across the diurnal cycle.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened inner flame—clarity, aspiration, and disciplined will—by which one digests experience, transforms darkness into insight, and is protected from inner ‘narrowness’ (aṃhas) and harmful impulses.

The seer

  • VasiṣṭhaVasiṣṭha gotra (Āditya/Brāhmaṇa seer-family; traditional purohita line of the Bharatas/Tr̥tsus) · Foremost among the Seven Ṛṣis (Saptarṣi), celebrated as a royal priest and master of Agni-hymns; associated with the Bharata–Tr̥tsu tradition and the theology of divine protection through ritual fire.
