Vyas ka ashram Mathura mein hai jahan sadhu log shastra ke sawaal hal karte hain. Ek Brahmin Vasu Panchal desh se kabhi akal mein dakshin gaya tha. Uski beti ne suna ki Mathura mein hadi dene se moksha milta hai. Woh yatriyon ke saath Mathura chali gayi. Raste mein uski sundarta dekh kar log use bura kaam ke liye pakad le gaye. Raja ka Shiv mandir par chalta raha tha aur woh ladki wahan fas gayi.

Varāha continues teaching Pṛthivī by mapping a Mathurā-centered sacred landscape where the Kṛṣṇagaṅgā and Yamunā (Kālindī) function as purifying waters, and where tīrtha-benefit is explicitly tied to disciplined conduct (snāna, smaraṇa, vrata). Vyāsa’s āśrama is introduced as a seasonal hub for learned ascetics who clarify doubts across śrauta, smārta, and purāṇic norms.
The discourse shifts from tīrtha-māhātmya to a social case narrative: the Pāñcāla Brahmin Vasu migrates south during famine, establishes a precarious household, and later his daughter joins a pilgrimage group to Mathurā after hearing claims about post-mortem merit—especially bone-immersion at a site described as ‘ardhacandra’-like. Her beauty becomes a narrative pivot as she is drawn into a courtesan milieu operating near a king’s ongoing satra/rite at a Śiva shrine (Devagartteśvara), exposing how merit-economies and pleasure-economies can intersect around sacred institutions.
The chapter’s tension peaks in the juxtaposition: on one side, the tīrtha is presented as reliably purifying when approached with restraint and recollection; on the other, the pilgrimage setting is shown as socially porous, where vulnerable persons can be captured by influence networks (veśyā-circuits) adjacent to ritual patronage. The implied resolution is normative rather than purely plot-based: sacred benefit is safeguarded by regulated vows, careful company (saṅga), and governance/ethics around shrine economies—otherwise the same sacred corridor becomes a site of moral risk.
Yamunā (Kālindī) river system; Kṛṣṇagaṅgā; Mathurā; Somavaikuṇṭha (as a named intermediate region); Kālañjara (mountain/region) with a Mahādeva/Śiva shrine; Himālaya; Badarī (Badarikāśrama region); Śivanadī (a river named in the narrative); Varapattana (a settlement on the southern bank of Śivanadī); Kānyakubja (Kanyakubja/Kannauj); Devagartteśvara (Śiva shrine).
The chapter frames tīrtha practice as requiring disciplined conduct—ritual bathing, mental recollection, and regulated vows—while also implying a social ethic: sacred institutions and pilgrimage settings can become sites of moral risk, especially for the vulnerable, when pleasure economies (e.g., courtesan networks) intersect with ritual patronage. The text thus juxtaposes ascetic regulation with a cautionary social narrative.
Cāturmāsya (the four-month observance) is explicitly mentioned as a recurring period when ascetics gather. The narrative also notes lunar timing: darśa and paurṇamāsī (new-moon and full-moon observances) in connection with regulated intake (phalāhāra) and periodic practice.
Although not couched in explicit ecological theory, the text treats rivers (Yamunā/Kālindī, Kṛṣṇagaṅgā) and tīrthas as shared terrestrial resources whose benefits depend on disciplined, repeatable practices (snāna, smaraṇa, vrata). This implicitly promotes a stewardship model: sacred waters function as regulated commons, sustained through norms of restraint and seasonal observance rather than indiscriminate use.
Kṛṣṇadvaipāyana Vyāsa is central as an authoritative sage associated with Mathurā, Himālaya, and Badarī. A Brahmin identified as Pāñcālya (from Pāñcāla lineage/region) named Vasu appears in the social narrative. A ruler titled the king of Kānyakubja is also referenced, linked to an ongoing satra at Devagartteśvara (Śiva).
