Soma Pavamana (for Indra)
This Pavamāna Soma hymn praises the freshly purified Soma as a honeyed, luminous rapture prepared specifically for Indra’s empowerment. It asks Soma to blaze forth as lord of plenitude, to open inner treasuries of strength and glory, and finally to enter Indra’s heart like rivers entering the ocean, becoming a supreme support upheld also by Mitra, Varuṇa, and Vāyu.
Mantra 1
पवस्व मधुमत्तम इन्द्राय सोम क्रतुवित्तमो मदः । महि द्युक्षतमो मदः ॥
Flow forth, O Soma, most honeyed, for Indra; a rapture most rich in will and discernment. A great rapture, most luminous in its shining.
Mantra 2
यस्य ते पीत्वा वृषभो वृषायतेऽस्य पीता स्वर्विदः । स सुप्रकेतो अभ्यक्रमीदिषोऽच्छा वाजं नैतशः ॥
He who, drinking of thee, becomes the Bull in his might; and by thy draught he is a finder of the Sun-worlds (svar). That man, full of clear perception, strides forward to the impulsions and to the plenitude (vāja), like Etaśa (the swift one).
Mantra 3
त्वं ह्यङ्ग दैव्या पवमान जनिमानि द्युमत्तमः । अमृतत्वाय घोषयः ॥
For thou indeed, O divine Pavamāna, most full of light, proclaimest the births (the becomings) that lead to immortality.
Mantra 4
येना नवग्वो दध्यङ्ङपोर्णुते येन विप्रास आपिरे । देवानां सुम्ने अमृतस्य चारुणो येन श्रवांस्यानशुः ॥
By thee the Navagvas and Dadhyañc were unveiled (released from the covering); by thee the seers attained their reach. In the gracious favour of the gods, in the lovely (chāru) delight of immortality, by thee they won their glorious hearings (fames).
Mantra 5
एष स्य धारया सुतोऽव्यो वारेभिः पवते मदिन्तमः । क्रीळन्नूर्मिरपामिव ॥
This one, pressed out, flows in his stream through the wool-filter, with the waters, most rapturous—playing like a wave of the waters.
Mantra 6
य उस्रिया अप्या अन्तरश्मनो निर्गा अकृन्तदोजसा । अभि व्रजं तत्निषे गव्यमश्व्यं वर्मीव धृष्णवा रुज ॥
He who, by the force of his own might, cuts out and releases the hidden rays of light and the inner cows from within the stone of obstruction; he spreads out the luminous enclosure of plenitude—rich in light and swift energies—and like a bold battering-ram he breaks the resisting cover.
Mantra 7
आ सोता परि षिञ्चताश्वं न स्तोममप्तुरं रजस्तुरम् । वनक्रक्षमुदप्रुतम् ॥
O pressers, pour it all around—this praiseful surge like a horse—swift to cross the waters, rushing through the mid-world, breaking through the thickets of the being, leaping upward beyond the lower flood.
Mantra 8
सहस्रधारं वृषभं पयोवृधं प्रियं देवाय जन्मने । ऋतेन य ऋतजातो विवावृधे राजा देव ऋतं बृहत् ॥
The bull with a thousand streams, increaser of the soul’s milk, dear to the divine birth—he who, born of the Truth and growing by the Truth, becomes the kingly god: the vast Truth itself.
Mantra 9
अभि द्युम्नं बृहद्यश इषस्पते दिदीहि देव देवयुः । वि कोशं मध्यमं युव ॥
Shine forth toward the great glory, O lord of plenitude; blaze, O god, desired by the god-seeking soul, and open wide the middle treasury within us.
Mantra 10
आ वच्यस्व सुदक्ष चम्वोः सुतो विशां वह्निर्न विश्पतिः । वृष्टिं दिवः पवस्व रीतिमपां जिन्वा गविष्टये धियः ॥
Become expressible and manifest, O perfectly-skilled one, pressed in the bowls—like a carrying flame, like a lord of the peoples. Purify yourself into the rain of heaven, into the right flow of the waters; quicken our thoughts for the winning of the rays of Light.
Mantra 11
एतमु त्यं मदच्युतं सहस्रधारं वृषभं दिवो दुहुः । विश्वा वसूनि बिभ्रतम् ॥
This very one they milk from heaven—the thousand-streamed bull, dripping ecstasy—bearing within himself all riches of being.
Mantra 12
वृषा वि जज्ञे जनयन्नमर्त्यः प्रतपञ्ज्योतिषा तमः । स सुष्टुतः कविभिर्निर्णिजं दधे त्रिधात्वस्य दंससा ॥
The Bull is born forth, the immortal generating; he burns away the darkness with his light. Praised well by the seers, he puts on his shining robe, by the skill of his triple powers.
Mantra 13
स सुन्वे यो वसूनां यो रायामानेता य इळानाम् । सोमो यः सुक्षितीनाम् ॥
He is for the presser: the giver of the essential riches, the bringer of plenitude, the leader of the illumined offerings; Soma, who establishes the soul in a good and secure dwelling.
Mantra 14
यस्य न इन्द्रः पिबाद्यस्य मरुतो यस्य वार्यमणा भगः । आ येन मित्रावरुणा करामह एन्द्रमवसे महे ॥
Of whom Indra drinks, of whom the Maruts, of whom too Aryaman and Bhaga partake—by whom we make ready Mitra and Varuṇa: by that Soma may we draw near to Indra for the great protection.
Mantra 15
इन्द्राय सोम पातवे नृभिर्यतः स्वायुधो मदिन्तमः । पवस्व मधुमत्तमः ॥
For Indra to drink, urged on by the seekers, O Soma—self-armed, most intoxicating—purify yourself, become most honeyed in delight.
Mantra 16
इन्द्रस्य हार्दि सोमधानमा विश समुद्रमिव सिन्धवः । जुष्टो मित्राय वरुणाय वायवे दिवो विष्टम्भ उत्तमः ॥
Enter, O Soma, into the heart of Indra as the establishing of the delight; as rivers enter the ocean. Accepted by Mitra and Varuṇa and by Vāyu, become the supreme support of the heaven within us.
It praises Soma as he is purified and made ready for offering, asking him to flow sweetly and brightly to empower Indra and to awaken strength and glory within the worshipper.
“Pavamāna” means “purifying/flowing through the filter.” The hymn focuses on Soma in the act of filtration, becoming clear, radiant, and fit for the gods.
It is a ritual and symbolic image: the offering is meant to fully unite with Indra’s power, establishing exhilaration and support—just as rivers naturally merge into the sea.
