
Sukta 10.92
Agni (as Hotṛ, guest, luminous ketu ascending to heaven)
This hymn praises Agni as the sacrifice’s charioteer and clan-priest (Hotṛ), the nightly guest who blazes up through dry kindling and rises as a radiant ketu toward heaven. It exalts his irresistible power—so great that even solar motion and Indra-like might are evoked—while recalling the ancient Aṅgiras seer-tradition and the Soma-pressing implements that establish a clear path for the rite and for insight.
Mantra 1
यज्ञस्य वो रथ्यं विश्पतिं विशां होतारमक्तोरतिथिं विभावसुम् । शोचञ्छुष्कासु हरिणीषु जर्भुरद्वृषा केतुर्यजतो द्यामशायत ॥
Your charioteer of the sacrifice, the lord of the peoples, the Hotṛ of the clans, the guest of the nights, the all-illuminating—burning, he labours amid the dry kindlings. The mighty radiant sign, adorable, has stretched himself to heaven.
Mantra 2
इममञ्जस्पामुभये अकृण्वत धर्माणमग्निं विदथस्य साधनम् । अक्तुं न यह्वमुषसः पुरोहितं तनूनपातमरुषस्य निंसते ॥
This Agni, swift to anoint with brightness, both (heaven and earth / both sides) have made the upholder of the law, the accomplisher of the assembly. Like the night’s flame, the impetuous one is set in front by the Dawns; Tanūnapāt, of the Ruddy One, is established.
Mantra 3
बळस्य नीथा वि पणेश्च मन्महे वया अस्य प्रहुता आसुरत्तवे । यदा घोरासो अमृतत्वमाशतादिज्जनस्य दैव्यस्य चर्किरन् ॥
We ponder the leadings of his strength, and the breaking open of the Paṇi; his birds (swift powers) were sent forth to devour. When the terrible ones reached immortality, then indeed they made the divine race resound with their cry of victory.
Mantra 4
ऋतस्य हि प्रसितिर्द्यौरुरु व्यचो नमो मह्यरमतिः पनीयसी । इन्द्रो मित्रो वरुणः सं चिकित्रिरेऽथो भगः सविता पूतदक्षसः ॥
For wide heaven is the forward-impulsion of Ṛta, far-spreading; reverence to the great Aramati, most admirable. Indra, Mitra, Varuṇa have together perceived it; and Bhaga, Savitṛ—of purified discernment.
Mantra 5
प्र रुद्रेण ययिना यन्ति सिन्धवस्तिरो महीमरमतिं दधन्विरे । येभिः परिज्मा परियन्नुरु ज्रयो वि रोरुवज्जठरे विश्वमुक्षते ॥
Forward, with Rudra the impeller, the rivers move; they uphold great Aramati across the earth. With whom the roaming one goes around the wide slopes, roaring aloud—he waters all within the belly (the holding depth).
Mantra 6
क्राणा रुद्रा मरुतो विश्वकृष्टयो दिवः श्येनासो असुरस्य नीळयः । तेभिश्चष्टे वरुणो मित्रो अर्यमेन्द्रो देवेभिरर्वशेभिरर्वशः ॥
The strong Rudras, the Maruts of all the peoples, the heaven’s hawks, the dwelling powers of the Asura—by them Varuṇa beholds, Mitra, Aryaman, Indra; by the gods, by the swift ones, ever swift.
Mantra 7
इन्द्रे भुजं शशमानास आशत सूरो दृशीके वृषणश्च पौंस्ये । प्र ये न्वस्यार्हणा ततक्षिरे युजं वज्रं नृषदनेषु कारवः ॥
In Indra they attained the might, growing in mastery; the Sun in vision, and the bull in manly power. Those craftsmen who were worthy fashioned for him the yoked thunderbolt in the seats of the human soul.
Mantra 8
सूरश्चिदा हरितो अस्य रीरमदिन्द्रादा कश्चिद्भयते तवीयसः । भीमस्य वृष्णो जठरादभिश्वसो दिवेदिवे सहुरिः स्तन्नबाधितः ॥
Even the luminous Sun and his swift steeds are set in motion by him; from Indra’s surpassing might, who indeed could stand unafraid? From the belly of the formidable Bull rises the strong breath of force; day by day the enduring power presses forward, unconquered.
Mantra 9
स्तोमं वो अद्य रुद्राय शिक्वसे क्षयद्वीराय नमसा दिदिष्टन । येभिः शिवः स्ववाँ एवयावभिर्दिवः सिषक्ति स्वयशा निकामभिः ॥
Today, fashion your hymn of affirmation for Rudra the wise, for the Lord who establishes heroic being; offer it with surrender. By those powers with which he is benign and self-mastering, he extends from heaven his self-luminous energies according to the soul’s true will.
Mantra 10
ते हि प्रजाया अभरन्त वि श्रवो बृहस्पतिर्वृषभः सोमजामयः । यज्ञैरथर्वा प्रथमो वि धारयद्देवा दक्षैर्भृगवः सं चिकित्रिरे ॥
They indeed bore forth for the human becoming the wide fame of the Word: Bṛhaspati, the Bull, kin of Soma. By sacrifices Atharvan first established the workings; the gods with skill, the Bhṛgus, came to integral discernment.
Mantra 11
ते हि द्यावापृथिवी भूरिरेतसा नराशंसश्चतुरङ्गो यमोऽदितिः । देवस्त्वष्टा द्रविणोदा ऋभुक्षणः प्र रोदसी मरुतो विष्णुरर्हिरे ॥
They indeed—Heaven and Earth rich in creative seed—Nārāśaṃsa, the four-limbed power, Yama and Aditi; Tvaṣṭṛ the divine shaper, the giver of plenitude, Ṛbhukṣan; and the Maruts, and Viṣṇu—have all earned and upheld the wide worlds for the advancing soul.
Mantra 12
उत स्य न उशिजामुर्विया कविरहिः शृणोतु बुध्न्यो हवीमनि । सूर्यामासा विचरन्ता दिविक्षिता धिया शमीनहुषी अस्य बोधतम् ॥
And may the far-ranging seer, the Serpent, hear us—Budhnya—at the act of offering. May Sun and Moon moving in their heavenly dwelling, by the illumined thought of Śamī and Nahuṣa, awaken to this (our call) and make it conscious in us.
Mantra 13
प्र नः पूषा चरथं विश्वदेव्योऽपां नपादवतु वायुरिष्टये । आत्मानं वस्यो अभि वातमर्चत तदश्विना सुहवा यामनि श्रुतम् ॥
May Pūṣan lead forward our journey; may the All-godhead protect; may Apāṃ Napāt guard; may Vāyu aid our chosen seeking. Praise the Breath that turns toward the more luminous good; and may the Aśvins, easy to call, hear this in their going.
Mantra 14
विशामासामभयानामधिक्षितं गीर्भिरु स्वयशसं गृणीमसि । ग्नाभिर्विश्वाभिरदितिमनर्वणमक्तोर्युवानं नृमणा अधा पतिम् ॥
With our inspired words we proclaim the self-luminous One who is enthroned over these fearless peoples. With all the divine powers (gnā), we affirm Aditi, uninjured and unfallen—young in the dawning—delighting in man, the true Lord.
Mantra 15
रेभदत्र जनुषा पूर्वो अङ्गिरा ग्रावाण ऊर्ध्वा अभि चक्षुरध्वरम् । येभिर्विहाया अभवद्विचक्षणः पाथः सुमेकं स्वधितिर्वनन्वति ॥
Here the primal Aṅgiras by birth uttered the inspired cry; the pressing-stones, uplifted, looked toward the sacrifice. By these means the wide one became clear-seeing; the path grew well-fixed, as the axe of inner discernment hews through the growth.
Agni is the main deity—praised as the Hotṛ (chief ritual priest), the welcomed guest, and a radiant ketu (luminous sign) rising toward heaven.
Because Agni is ritually ‘received’ and tended, especially in evening or night-kindling; the fire is treated like an honored guest whose presence brings light, protection, and ritual success.
It recalls the ancient seer-line associated with discovering and establishing sacred fire and ritual knowledge, implying that today’s sacrifice follows a proven, well-made path that also awakens inner insight.
