Verse 239 (चौपाई)

Without knowing Him, even the false is taken for true— just as, in ignorance of the rope, it is recognized as a snake. When He is known, the world’s show is seen through; as on awakening, the delusion of a dream departs. I bow to that very Rama in His childlike form, whose Name, when repeated, makes every perfection easily won. Abode of auspiciousness, remover of all ill— be gracious, O Rama, who sports in Dasaratha’s courtyard. Having made obeisance to Rama, Tripurari (Shiva) spoke words sweet as nectar in overflowing joy: “Blessed, blessed are you, O daughter of the Mountain-king; no benefactor is your equal. You have asked for the occasion of Raghupati’s story— a Ganga that sanctifies the whole world. You are devoted to the feet of the hero of Raghu; you have raised this question for the welfare of the universe.”

Verse 241 (चौपाई)

Even so, you have done well to remove doubt; for in speaking and in hearing it, the good of all is wrought. Those who have not listened to Hari’s sacred tale with their ears—their ear-holes are like a serpent’s den. Those whose eyes have not beheld the saints—their eyes are but as markings on a peacock’s feather. Those heads are like a bitter gourd upon a balance, who do not bow at the root of Hari and the Guru’s feet. Those who have not brought devotion to Hari into the heart—those creatures are like living corpses. The tongue that does not sing the virtues of Rama—that tongue is like the tongue of a frog. That breast is thunderbolt-hard and pitiless, which, hearing Hari’s deeds, does not exult. Hear, O Girija, the play of Rama—enchanting by nature, for the good of the gods and the bewilderment of the demons.

The tale of Rama is fair and saving; it makes the bird of doubt take flight. The tale of Rama is an axe to the tree of Kali’s evils—listen to it with reverence, O daughter of the Mountain-King. The Name of Rama, His qualities, and His deeds are most becoming; the Vedas sing of His countless births and works. As the Lord Rama is infinite, so are His story, His glory, and His manifold excellences. Yet I shall speak according to what I have heard and as my understanding allows, seeing thy exceeding love. O Uma, thy question is naturally gracious; it brings joy and is approved by the saints—so it pleases me. One thing, however, is not pleasing to me, though in delusion thou hast spoken it, O Bhavani: that thou hast said Rama is ‘some other’—He whom the Vedas hymn and whom sages hold in meditation.
kahahi sunahi asa adhama nara grasē jē mōha pisāca | pāṣaṇḍī hari pada bimukha jānahĩ jhūṭha na sāca ||114||
Solch niedrige Menschen – vom Gespenst der Verblendung (Moha) ergriffen – reden und hören unablässig derartige Reden. Sektiererische Heuchler, von den Füßen des Herrn abgewandt, vermögen nicht zu unterscheiden, was unwahr und was wahr ist.
Verse 245 (चौपाई)

Ignorant, unskilled, blind, and ill-starred—some have fastened their obstinate minds upon the objects of sense. Lewd, deceitful, crooked, and ever fault-finding, they have not beheld, even in dream, the assembly of the saints. They utter words that accord not with the Veda—folk to whom true gain and loss are alike unseen. Deaf and defiled, and lacking the eyes of insight, how shall such poor souls behold the beauty of Rāma’s form? Having no discernment of the attributeless and the manifest, they prattle many a fabricated argument. Under the sway of Hari’s Māyā they wander in the world; from such men no absurdity is ever too strange to be spoken. Like madmen, possessed, helpless and intoxicated, they do not speak with thought and measure. Those who have drunk the wine of great delusion and pride—what can be done with them, who are deaf to counsel?

Verse 247 (चौपाई)

Between the Manifest (with attributes) and the Unmanifest (beyond attributes) there is, in truth, no difference; thus do sages, the wise, the Purāṇas and the Vedas sing. He who is attributeless, formless, unseen, unborn—by the constraint of the devotee’s love becomes the Lord with attributes. How could the attributeless be other than the same when manifest? As water is not separate from ice or hail. His Name is a moth-destroyer to the darkness of delusion; how then could one speak of an occasion for bewilderment in Him? Rāma is Being–Consciousness–Bliss, a sun: there is not there even the least trace of the night of infatuation. He is the Lord whose very nature is effortless light; there too is no ‘dawn’ of knowledge as though it newly arose. Joy and grief, knowledge and ignorance, the creaturely condition, and the pride of ‘I’— Know Rāma as Brahman, all-pervading in the world: the ancient Supreme, sheer and perfect bliss.
Verse 248 (दोहा/सोरठा)

Verse 249 (चौपाई)

The ignorant do not understand their own delusion; dull creatures fasten their infatuation upon the Lord. As when, seeing a mass of clouds in the sky, men of perverse judgment declare, “The sky is covered.” But if one looks closely and brings a finger to the eye, the two moons stand revealed to his liking. So too, O Uma, such is the sense-born delusion regarding Rama—like darkness, smoke, and dust in the sky. Sense-objects, the organs, gods, and embodied souls—all are but one conscious principle appearing as many. He who is the supreme Illuminator of all—He is Rama, the beginningless Lord of Ayodhya. Rama is both the illumined world and its Illuminator; Master of Maya, the abode of knowledge and virtues. By His truth alone insentient Maya seems true, and delusion is thereby made to appear supportable.

Verse 251 (चौपाई)

Thus does the world abide, taking refuge in the Lord—though what is unreal still yields the experience of suffering. If in a dream someone’s head is cut off, the anguish does not depart without awakening. By whose grace such delusion is dispelled—O Girija—that compassionate Lord is Raghurāī. No one has found His beginning or His end; the Vedas so sing, beyond the reach of mere conjecture. Without feet He moves; without ears He hears; without hands He performs works of many kinds. Without a mouth He tastes all essences; without speech He is the great Teacher, the supreme Yogi. Without a body He touches; without eyes He sees; without a nose He apprehends all fragrance. In every way His doings are wondrous beyond the world; His glory cannot be adequately described.
Verse 252 (दोहा/सोरठा)

Seeing a creature die in Kashi, by the power of whose Name I make it sorrowless— that very Lord is my Master of all that moves and all that stands still; Raghuvara, the knower of every heart. Even if a man utters His Name helplessly, it burns away the sins wrought through many births. And those who remember Him with reverent attention cross the ocean of becoming as though it were a mere cow’s hoofprint. Rama is that Supreme Self, O Bhavani; therefore your speech here is greatly deluded and unfitting. When such doubt is brought into the heart, knowledge, dispassion, and every virtue depart. Hearing Shiva’s words that shatter delusion, all the contrivance of sophistical reasoning was dissolved. Then arose love and firm conviction at the feet of Raghuapati; the dreadful sense of impossibility was gone.
Verse 254 (दोहा/सोरठा)

Hearing your words, cool as moonbeams, the heavy delusion within me was dispelled, like the fierce heat of autumn. O compassionate one, you have removed all my doubts; knowing the true nature of Rama, I have fallen at your feet. By your grace, Lord, my despondency has now departed; by the blessing of the Lord’s feet I have become at peace. Now count me as your own handmaid, though by nature I am a simple, dull, and ignorant woman. First, answer what I asked—if, indeed, the Lord is pleased with me. Rama is Brahman: pure consciousness, imperishable; beyond all limiting attributes, yet dwelling in every heart. Why, then, has the Lord assumed a human body? Explain it to me, O Shiva, banner of righteousness. Hearing Uma’s supremely humble words, her holy love for Rama’s story grew ever more steadfast.

Listen, O Girija: fair are the deeds of Hari—vast and crystal-clear, sung by Veda and Agama. The very cause for which the Lord descends cannot be stated fully as ‘just so’. Rama is beyond the reach of reasoning, of intellect, mind, and speech; such is my view—hear it, O wise one. Yet saints and sages, the Vedas and the Purāṇas, speak as they can, by the measure of their own understanding and inference. So, O gracious-faced one, I shall tell you in that manner, as far as I am able to grasp the reason. Whenever dharma declines and the vile, arrogant demons increase, they commit injustices beyond telling; brahmins, cows, the gods, and the very earth are afflicted. Then, again and again, the Lord assumes diverse forms; the treasury of compassion removes the suffering of the righteous.
