Inside Sukta 16

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Agni is acclaimed as the master (īśe) of heroic might, great felicity, and wealth, including victorious force against obstruction.

  2. Development

Agni’s efficacy is expanded: he is the ‘doer’ who has mastered the worlds and established sacred service among the gods; the hymn then turns outward, urging the sacrificer to strive toward the gods, hero-power, and inspired utterance.

  3. Climax

The exhortation peaks in a call to align human effort with divine order—seeking suvīrya and śaṃsa (inspired praise) that wins both divine favor and human acclaim.

  4. Where it settles

A direct closing prayer asks Agni to grant vāja with progeny, to join the worshipper with greater abundance, and to create wide splendor and enduring fame through delight-bearing power.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the divine Fire—kindled in the rite, bright-tongued and swift—who carries offerings, awakens inspiration, and stands as lord (īśe) of power, fortune, and wealth. He is praised as the effective doer (cakriḥ) who overcomes and pervades the worlds and establishes service among the gods.
  • Cosmic functionMediator between humans and gods, transformer of offerings into divine portion, and a victorious force that burns through obstruction and clears the path for growth, prosperity, and right order.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened will and luminous aspiration in the practitioner—discernment that consumes inertia, converts raw impulse into clarity, and uplifts the mind toward inspired speech and noble action.

The seer

  • Viśvāmitra GāthinaGāthin / Viśvāmitra family (Mandala 3); later tradition associates him with the Kuśika line · A major Rigvedic seer-king whose family book (Maṇḍala 3) is central for Agni and Indra hymns; later remembered as a paradigmatic tapasvin and as the seer linked with the Gāyatrī mantra in post-Rigvedic tradition.
