Devata

Indra (receiving Soma) / Soma as offering

Inside Sukta 88

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Soma is explicitly pressed and purified for Indra—an urgent invitation to drink and be empowered for action.

  2. Development

Soma’s movement is intensified through vivid similes: like fire released in the forest and like a roaring host, he surges along the waters as a mighty wave.

  3. Climax

Soma is identified with deep, vast purity and with the lawful order (vratāni) associated with Varuṇa; his purity is also framed through Mitra-like friendliness and Aryaman-like right discernment.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn settles into a portrait of Soma as fully purified and ethically aligned, fit to be offered—strength for Indra and clarity/order for the sacrificer.

The deity: Soma Pavamāna with Indra as primary recipient

  • In the VedaSoma is the pressed plant-juice, clarified through woolen filters, praised as a radiant, swift ‘drop’ (indu) that exhilarates gods—especially Indra—and bears purity and truth. He is described as surging like a wave, blazing like fire when released, and as possessing the ‘laws’ (vratāni) associated with cosmic order.
  • Cosmic functionMediator of power between heaven and earth: Soma’s purified essence invigorates Indra for victory and sustains ṛta (order) by aligning sacrifice, speech, and intention with truth.
  • Inner significanceThe purifying Soma represents clarified consciousness—energy disciplined into lucidity—so that strength (indra-like will) becomes yoked to purposeful work and ethical order rather than mere impulse.

Frequently Asked Questions

It praises Soma while he is being purified and offered, especially as Indra’s drink. The hymn highlights Soma’s rushing power and his purity that supports right order (ṛta).

In Mandala 9, Soma is often the praised power, but Indra is the chief recipient who drinks Soma to gain strength for heroic action. The hymn therefore blesses both the offering (Soma) and its divine effect (Indra’s empowered will).

It means Soma is not only physically purified but also aligned with truth, friendship, and responsible discernment. The hymn connects ritual purity with ethical and spiritual clarity.
