Account of the Origin of the Ancestors (Pitṛs) and the Regulations for Śrāddha Offerings
तान्दृष्ट्वा सहसा ब्रह्मा तिर्यक्संस्थान उन्मुखान् । भवन्तः पितरः सन्तु सर्वेषां गृहमेधिनाम् ॥ ३४.५ ॥
tān dṛṣṭvā sahasā brahmā tiryaksaṃsthāna unmukhān | bhavantaḥ pitaraḥ santu sarveṣāṃ gṛhamedhinām || 34.5 ||
彼らを忽ち見たブラフマーは、上方に面し、身を横たえるその姿に向かって言った。「汝らはすべての家住者のためのピトリ(祖霊)となれ。」
Varāha (default speaker framework; explicit speaker within verse: Brahmā)
The verse reflects a common Purāṇic motif in which cosmic authorities (here, Brahmā) define institutional roles—such as the Pitṛs’ relationship to householders—supporting the historical study of South Asian ancestral rites and domestic dharma.
No geographic location is named in this verse fragment; the content is role-definition (Pitṛs and householders) rather than sacred geography.
The verse foregrounds the cultural-ethical framework of reciprocity between householders and ancestors: household life is presented as connected to ancestral responsibility and remembrance through established roles (Pitṛs) rather than as an isolated social unit.
