Adhyaya 1

Vallis

Valli: 1.1

Inside Adhyaya 1

Key teachings

  • • Nachiketa's steadfast truthfulness and spiritual resolve model the ideal seeker of wisdom, unafraid of death itself for the sake of knowledge. • The three boons symbolize ascending levels of spiritual inquiry: worldly reconciliation, ritual knowledge for heavenly realms, and ultimate knowledge of the Self. • Yama's temptation of Nachiketa with worldly pleasures, celestial nymphs, and earthly power mirrors every seeker's inner battle between the pleasant (preyas) and the good (shreyas). • The Self (Atman) is neither born nor does it die; it is eternal, unborn, and not destroyed when the body perishes. • The path of Self-realization is exceedingly subtle and requires a qualified teacher who has directly realized the Truth. • Omkara is declared the supreme support and the bridge to immortality. • The wise discriminate between the sensory world of change and the changeless Atman, choosing the good over the merely pleasant.
