Sukta 55

Rishi: RV-derived Indra-stotra tradition (as transmitted into AV 20); specific r̥ṣi attribution follows the RV source-hymn lineage rather than an Atharvanic family.

Devata: Indra

Chandas: Anuṣṭubh/Jagatī-type RV meter (as per RV source; AV 20 preserves RV prosody)

Frequently Asked Questions

For prosperity with protection—asking Indra to remove obstacles, make undertakings go smoothly, and secure a stable share of wealth (cattle, horse, portion) for the patron.

They symbolize hostile or hoarding powers that block or divert wealth. The hymn asks Indra to retrieve ‘helps’ from such powers and to ensure the patron’s share is not placed with the Paṇi (the hoarder).

The language presumes a Soma-sacrificer, but it can be recited more generally as an Indra prosperity-and-obstacle-removal prayer, using simple ritual markers like clean grass (barhis) and a pledged gift (dakṣiṇā).
