RV 10.63 is a late, expansive invocation to the Viśve Devāḥ that anchors present worship in the lineage of primordial and royal-sacrificial exemplars—Vivasvat, Manu, Yayāti, and Nahusha. The hymn gathers many deities (Indra, Agni, Mitra-Varuṇa, Bhaga, Dyāvāpṛthivī, Maruts, and the Ādityas) to secure protection in conflict, success in acquisition, and a right, inspired praise that keeps the sacrificer aligned with ṛta.

Inside Sukta 63

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens by calling the gods who ‘from afar’ establish the vital waters and who delight in Manu, rooted in Vivasvat’s lineage, asking them to speak guidance from above.

  2. Development

It broadens into a many-deity litany, moving from ancestral-sacrificial remembrance to practical petitions—release from distress, winning in struggles, and comprehensive protection—by naming the principal powers of the Vedic cosmos.

  3. Climax

A concentrated appeal for victory and well-being through a compact roll-call (Indra, Agni, Mitra-Varuṇa, Bhaga, Dyāvāpṛthivī, Maruts), presenting the pantheon as a united force for success.

  4. Where it settles

The poet self-identifies as Plati’s son and closes by strengthening the Ādityas and Aditi with inspired thought and song, affirming that luminous praise aligns the community with the immortal order.

The deity: Viśve Devāḥ, with concluding emphasis on the Ādityas and Aditi

  • Cosmic functionTo harmonize and coordinate the many functions of the pantheon—protection, victory, order, prosperity, and inspired speech—so the sacrificer is upheld in both social struggle (battle/contest) and cosmic order (ṛta).
  • Inner significanceThe ‘All-Gods’ represent the integration of inner faculties: strength (Indra), will and aspiration (Agni), ethical clarity and covenant (Mitra-Varuṇa), share and good fortune (Bhaga), stability (Heaven-Earth), and vital energies (Maruts), gathered under the wide, freeing wholeness of Aditi.

The seer

  • Plāteḥ Sūnuḥ (son of Plati/Plāta), later Mandala 10 poet (Anukramaṇī attribution varies)A self-identified late Rigvedic composer who frames the hymn as a comprehensive “All-Gods” litany, linking living ritual speech to ancestral-sacrificial memory (Manu/Vivasvat; Yayāti/Nahuṣa).

  • Guardians of ṛta (order) and social well-being
  • Givers of victory, release from distress, and prosperity

Also by this seer

  • Associated in tradition with RV 10.63 as the explicit self-reference occurs in 10.63.17
  • Representative of late Mandala 10 ‘family’ style: synthetic, many-deity invocations used for general welfare and victory

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare the altar/vedi and spread the barhis (ritual grass-seat) as the ‘seat’ of the gods.
  • Kindle Agni and establish the opening offerings (āhuti) to make the path for the deities.
  • Recite the hymn as a collective invitation: first recalling the far/primordial gods and ancestral models (Vivasvat-Manu; Yayāti-Nahuṣa), then naming major deities for specific aims (victory, release from distress, welfare).
  • Make accompanying oblations at key invocations (especially to Indra for victory; to Agni as mouth of the gods; to Mitra-Varuṇa for right order; to Bhaga for allotment).
  • Conclude with praise to the Ādityas and Aditi, sealing the rite with a request for inspired, ‘immortal’ speech and stable well-being.

Offerings

  • Ghee (ghṛta) oblations into Agni
  • Soma libations (where applicable)
  • Barley/cakes or simple food-offerings (depending on rite)
  • Fragrant kindling/wood and ritual grass (barhis) as seating and support

Frequently Asked Questions

They are the ‘All-Gods’ invoked as a single divine assembly. The hymn treats many deities as coordinated powers who attend the sacrifice and protect the worshippers.

These names connect the present ritual to revered ancestral and primordial models of right worship and kingship. By recalling them, the poet asks the gods to support today’s community with the same sanctioned order and success.

It asks for help in struggles (including battle or competition), release from distress, and overall well-being (svasti). It also seeks right guidance and inspired speech so the community stays aligned with ṛta.
