Sukta 64

Sukta 10.64

Devata

Collective gods (open inquiry which deity grants grace and help)

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (probable; requires metrical confirmation)

This hymn opens as a searching invocation: the poet asks which among the gods truly hears, grants joy, and turns toward the worshipper with saving help. It then broadens into a collective appeal to divine powers—especially the life-nourishing Waters and rivers—and culminates in praise of the Ādityas and Aditi as sovereign upholders of order and protection.

Inside Sukta 64

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct inquiry into divine responsiveness—who truly hears, who grants joy, who turns with help (ūtī).

  2. Development

The hymn expands from question to invocation, naming and welcoming sustaining powers, especially the Waters and great rivers as maternal nourishers.

  3. Climax

A concentrated petition for fostering aid through the mighty rivers/Waters—imagined as luminous, ghee-rich, honey-sweet abundance that increases life.

  4. Where it settles

It closes by affirming praise of the Ādityas and Aditi as sovereign protectors, anchoring the hymn in cosmic order and immortal strength.

The deity: Viśve Devāḥ with emphasis on Ādityāḥ/Aditi and Āpaḥ

  • In the VedaThe hymn treats the gods as a coordinated divine host: those who hear (śṛṇvatām), bring solace (mṛḷāti), and turn toward mortals with aid (ūtī). Rivers and Waters are praised as divine Mothers who nourish with ghee-rich, honey-sweet ‘milk’—a Vedic image for abundance and luminous vitality—while the Ādityas with Aditi are lauded as powerful lords sustaining the world-order.
  • Cosmic functionTo uphold ṛta (cosmic order), protect the community, and pour forth fertility, increase, and life-power through the Waters; the Ādityas embody sovereign guardianship and moral-cosmic regulation, while the Waters embody generative flow and sustenance.
  • Inner significanceA movement from uncertainty to alignment: the seeker asks ‘who will help?’ and discovers help as a convergence of powers—clarity and protection (Ādityas/Aditi) together with nourishment and growth (Waters). Psychologically, it integrates trust, uplift (mayas), and inner replenishment as the mind turns from doubt to a felt support from the divine order.

The seer

  • Platā (Plateḥ sūnuḥ)Platā/Plate family (as indicated by the refrain-like patronymic “plateḥ sūnuḥ” in the hymn) · A late Rigvedic poet associated with hymns that address the gods collectively and emphasize protective ‘help’ (ūtí), gladness (mṛḷá), and the sustaining powers of Aditi and the Ādityas.
