Sukta 60

Mantra 1

श्नथद्वृत्रमुत सनोति वाजमिन्द्रा यो अग्नी सहुरी सपर्यात् । इरज्यन्ता वसव्यस्य भूरेः सहस्तमा सहसा वाजयन्ता ॥

He breaks the coverer and wins the plenitude of force—Indra, who with Agni, the two mighty ones, is rightly served. They strive for the abundant good, most strong in strength, making the powers of victory grow within us.

Mantra 2

ता योधिष्टमभि गा इन्द्र नूनमपः स्वरुषसो अग्न ऊळ्हाः । दिशः स्वरुषस इन्द्र चित्रा अपो गा अग्ने युवसे नियुत्वान् ॥

Fight now, O Indra, toward those luminous cows; and you, O Agni, toward the waters and the dawns that are borne upward into the light. O Indra, make the directions bright with dawn’s radiance; O Agni, yoked with your steeds, bring the waters and the rays to their youth and increase within us.

Mantra 3

आ वृत्रहणा वृत्रहभिः शुष्मैरिन्द्र यातं नमोभिरग्ने अर्वाक् । युवं राधोभिरकवेभिरिन्द्राग्ने अस्मे भवतमुत्तमेभिः ॥

Come hither, O Indra and Agni, slayers of the Coverer, with your victorious powers and impelling energies; approach us with our acts of submission. You two, Indra-Agni, become for us with your unerring, luminous gifts, the highest helpers and bringers of the best plenitudes.

Mantra 4

ता हुवे ययोरिदं पप्ने विश्वं पुरा कृतम् । इन्द्राग्नी न मर्धतः ॥

Those two I call—by whom this entire world, formed from of old, has been pervaded and upheld; Indra and Agni do not fail or grow faint in the work.

Mantra 5

उग्रा विघनिना मृध इन्द्राग्नी हवामहे । ता नो मृळात ईदृशे ॥

The mighty two, smiters of resistance, Indra and Agni, we call; may they show us grace in this our condition and need.

Mantra 6

हतो वृत्राण्यार्या हतो दासानि सत्पती । हतो विश्वा अप द्विषः ॥

By the two lords of the true way, the obstructing powers are smitten; the dark forces are smitten; all the hatreds are smitten and cast away.

Mantra 7

इन्द्राग्नी युवामिमेऽभि स्तोमा अनूषत । पिबतं शम्भुवा सुतम् ॥

O Indra and Agni, these hymns have sounded forth towards you; drink the Soma pressed for your bliss-bringing peace and well-being.

Mantra 8

या वां सन्ति पुरुस्पृहो नियुतो दाशुषे नरा । इन्द्राग्नी ताभिरा गतम् ॥

Whatever eager-yoked movements of yours, desired by many, are there for the giver, O two heroic powers—O Indra and Agni, come with them to us.

Mantra 9

ताभिरा गच्छतं नरोपेदं सवनं सुतम् । इन्द्राग्नी सोमपीतये ॥

With those harnessed powers come here, O heroic ones, to this pressed Soma at the offering-session, O Indra and Agni, for the drinking of delight.

Mantra 10

तमीळिष्व यो अर्चिषा वना विश्वा परिष्वजत् । कृष्णा कृणोति जिह्वया ॥

Adore Him—who with his flame embraces all the woods; who with his tongue makes the dark things luminous for the work.

Mantra 11

य इद्ध आविवासति सुम्नमिन्द्रस्य मर्त्यः । द्युम्नाय सुतरा अपः ॥

The mortal who, when the Fire is kindled, serves to win the gracious favour of Indra, finds the currents that carry him safely towards luminous victory.

Mantra 12

ता नो वाजवतीरिष आशून्पिपृतमर्वतः । इन्द्रमग्निं च वोळ्हवे ॥

May those forces for us fill the swift horses with impulses rich in plenitude of strength, to carry Indra and Agni and bring them near as our leaders in the work.

Mantra 13

उभा वामिन्द्राग्नी आहुवध्या उभा राधसः सह मादयध्यै । उभा दाताराविषां रयीणामुभा वाजस्य सातये हुवे वाम् ॥

O Indra-and-Agni, I call on you both to be invoked; I call on you both to rejoice together in the plenitudes. You are both givers of the impulsions (iṣāḥ) and the inner riches (rayīḥ); I invoke you both for the winning of the vāja— the fullness of victorious force.

Mantra 14

आ नो गव्येभिरश्व्यैर्वसव्यैरुप गच्छतम् । सखायौ देवौ सख्याय शम्भुवेन्द्राग्नी ता हवामहे ॥

Come to us with the luminous herds, with the swift powers, with the abundant riches; draw near. O divine friends, for friendship and for the becoming of peace and bliss, O Indra-and-Agni, you two we call.

Mantra 15

इन्द्राग्नी शृणुतं हवं यजमानस्य सुन्वतः । वीतं हव्यान्या गतं पिबतं सोम्यं मधु ॥

O Indra-and-Agni, hear the call of the sacrificer who presses the Soma. Having accepted the offerings, come here; drink the Soma-honey— the sweetness that becomes force and clarity within.
