Viśve Devāḥ (All Gods) / enumerated deities
This hymn is a comprehensive invocation to the Viśve Devāḥ, explicitly naming many major Vedic powers and asking them to act “in one accord” to uphold the sacrifice and human welfare. It weaves together cosmic order (ṛta), the sustaining parents Heaven-and-Earth, and the protective, wide-ranging guidance of the gods, culminating in a prayer for lasting svasti (well-being).
Mantra 1
अग्निरिन्द्रो वरुणो मित्रो अर्यमा वायुः पूषा सरस्वती सजोषसः । आदित्या विष्णुर्मरुतः स्वर्बृहत्सोमो रुद्रो अदितिर्ब्रह्मणस्पतिः ॥
Agni, Indra, Varuṇa, Mitra, Aryaman, Vāyu, Pūṣan, Sarasvatī in one accord; the Ādityas, Viṣṇu, the Maruts, the wide Vast (Svar, Bṛhat), Soma, Rudra, Aditi, and Brahmaṇaspati—may these powers together uphold and perfect our inner sacrifice.
Mantra 2
इन्द्राग्नी वृत्रहत्येषु सत्पती मिथो हिन्वाना तन्वा समोकसा । अन्तरिक्षं मह्या पप्रुरोजसा सोमो घृतश्रीर्महिमानमीरयन् ॥
Indra and Agni, true lords in the slayings of the Coverer, urging each other on and dwelling together in one home of being; by their force they have filled the wide mid-world, while Soma, radiant with clarified delight, raises their greatness.
Mantra 3
तेषां हि मह्ना महतामनर्वणां स्तोमाँ इयर्म्यृतज्ञा ऋतावृधाम् । ये अप्सवमर्णवं चित्रराधसस्ते नो रासन्तां महये सुमित्र्याः ॥
For by the greatness of those great and unerring Truth-knowers, increasers of the Truth, I set forth hymns: they whose gifts are manifold, who move in the oceanic flow—may they grant to us for our wideness the good-friendship (harmonious aid).
Mantra 4
स्वर्णरमन्तरिक्षाणि रोचना द्यावाभूमी पृथिवीं स्कम्भुरोजसा । पृक्षा इव महयन्तः सुरातयो देवाः स्तवन्ते मनुषाय सूरयः ॥
They uphold by force the shining spaces of the midworld, the luminous realms, Heaven-and-Earth and the Earth-foundation; like strong steeds enlarging their power, the gods—good givers—are praised by the seers for man, that the human may grow into the light.
Mantra 5
मित्राय शिक्ष वरुणाय दाशुषे या सम्राजा मनसा न प्रयुच्छतः । ययोर्धाम धर्मणा रोचते बृहद्ययोरुभे रोदसी नाधसी वृतौ ॥
Grant skill and right attainment for the giver to Mitra and to Varuṇa—those two sovereigns who do not fail in their will; whose wide seat shines by the law, and in whose embrace the two worlds are set firm and nourished.
Mantra 6
या गौर्वर्तनिं पर्येति निष्कृतं पयो दुहाना व्रतनीरवारतः । सा प्रब्रुवाणा वरुणाय दाशुषे देवेभ्यो दाशद्धविषा विवस्वते ॥
She, the Cow, who goes around the appointed course, milking out the milk, the leader of the law, unceasing—she, proclaiming, gives the offering to Varuṇa the giver, and to the gods she gives by oblation to Vivasvat: the radiant one.
Mantra 7
दिवक्षसो अग्निजिह्वा ऋतावृध ऋतस्य योनिं विमृशन्त आसते । द्यां स्कभित्व्यप आ चक्रुरोजसा यज्ञं जनित्वी तन्वी नि मामृजुः ॥
The wide-shining ones, flame-tongued, increasers of the Truth, sit touching and discerning the womb of ṛta; having propped up heaven, they by force set the waters in motion; giving birth to the sacrifice, they fashioned it in the body and made it ready.
Mantra 8
परिक्षिता पितरा पूर्वजावरी ऋतस्य योना क्षयतः समोकसा । द्यावापृथिवी वरुणाय सव्रते घृतवत्पयो महिषाय पिन्वतः ॥
The two parents, encompassing and ancient in their first union, dwell together in the womb of ṛta; Heaven-and-Earth, for Varuṇa of the one law, swell the rich milk, clarified and abundant, for the great one—so the vast strength may be nourished.
Mantra 9
पर्जन्यावाता वृषभा पुरीषिणेन्द्रवायू वरुणो मित्रो अर्यमा । देवाँ आदित्याँ अदितिं हवामहे ये पार्थिवासो दिव्यासो अप्सु ये ॥
We call Parjanya and Vāta, the strong bulls who pour the plenitude; we call Indra–Vāyu, Varuṇa, Mitra, Aryaman. We call the Gods, the Ādityas and Aditi—those powers that stand in the earthly being, those that are of the heaven, and those that move in the waters of the inner life.
Mantra 10
त्वष्टारं वायुमृभवो य ओहते दैव्या होतारा उषसं स्वस्तये । बृहस्पतिं वृत्रखादं सुमेधसमिन्द्रियं सोमं धनसा उ ईमहे ॥
We seek Tvaṣṭṛ the shaper, and Vāyu the life-breath; we seek the Ṛbhus who drive the work forward, and the divine Hotṛs, and Dawn for our well-being. We seek Bṛhaspati, the force that eats away the obstructer, and Soma the power of delight and victory, for the gaining of inner riches.
Mantra 11
ब्रह्म गामश्वं जनयन्त ओषधीर्वनस्पतीन्पृथिवीं पर्वताँ अपः । सूर्यं दिवि रोहयन्तः सुदानव आर्या व्रता विसृजन्तो अधि क्षमि ॥
The creative Word brings forth the Cow and the Horse—rays of knowledge and powers of energy; it brings forth the healing plants and the lords of the forest, the earth, the mountains, and the waters. Raising the Sun in the heaven of the mind, the generous ones release the noble laws of right action upon the field of our becoming.
Mantra 12
भुज्युमंहसः पिपृथो निरश्विना श्यावं पुत्रं वध्रिमत्या अजिन्वतम् । कमद्युवं विमदायोहथुर्युवं विष्णाप्वं विश्वकायाव सृजथः ॥
O Aśvins, you bore Bhujyu out of distress; you quickened Śyāva, the son of Vadhri-matī. You carried Kamadyu for Vimadā; and you set Viṣṇāpū in motion for Viśvakāya. Thus you are the rescuing twin-powers that lift the soul from peril and restore its right movement.
Mantra 13
पावीरवी तन्यतुरेकपादजो दिवो धर्ता सिन्धुरापः समुद्रियः । विश्वे देवासः शृणवन्वचांसि मे सरस्वती सह धीभिः पुरंध्या ॥
Pāvīravī, the thunder-force; Ekapād, the one-footed power; Aja, the unborn; the upholder of heaven; the Sindhu and the oceanic Waters—may all these divine powers hear my words. May Sarasvatī too, with her illumined thoughts and plenary discernment, be with us.
Mantra 14
विश्वे देवाः सह धीभिः पुरंध्या मनोर्यजत्रा अमृता ऋतज्ञाः । रातिषाचो अभिषाचः स्वर्विदः स्वर्गिरो ब्रह्म सूक्तं जुषेरत ॥
May all the Gods, with illumined thoughts and fullness of discernment—adorable, immortal, knowers of ṛta—accept this well-spoken hymn, this creative word that bears the sun-world. May they come with their gifts and their supporting forces, finding for us the light of the higher heaven.
Mantra 15
देवान्वसिष्ठो अमृतान्ववन्दे ये विश्वा भुवनाभि प्रतस्थुः । ते नो रासन्तामुरुगायमद्य यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥
Vasiṣṭha bows to the immortal Gods who have taken their stations over all the worlds. May they grant us today the wide-reaching path of fulfillment; may you protect us always with your powers of well-being and right harmony.
They are the collective “All Gods,” a unified host of divine powers. The hymn even names many of them—Agni, Indra, Varuṇa, Mitra, Vāyu, Sarasvatī, the Ādityas, Viṣṇu, the Maruts, Soma, Rudra, Aditi, and Brahmaṇaspati.
The hymn asks the gods to work together in harmony, uphold ṛta (right order), strengthen the sacrifice, and protect the worshipper with svasti—ongoing well-being, safety, and right harmony.
It connects ritual life to cosmic foundations. Heaven-and-Earth are pictured as the ancient parents dwelling in ṛta, nourishing divine strength—showing that right action and worship are meant to align with the universe’s lawful order.
