Mantra 1

अबुध्रमु त्य इन्द्रवन्तो अग्नयो ज्योतिर्भरन्त उषसो व्युष्टिषु । मही द्यावापृथिवी चेततामपोऽद्या देवानामव आ वृणीमहे ॥

They have awakened—those fires filled with Indra’s force—bringing the light in the dawn’s unfoldings. Let vast Heaven and Earth take heed; and the Waters too. Today we choose the help of the gods, that the inner day may rise.

Mantra 2

दिवस्पृथिव्योरव आ वृणीमहे मातॄन्त्सिन्धून्पर्वताञ्छर्यणावतः । अनागास्त्वं सूर्यमुषासमीमहे भद्रं सोमः सुवानो अद्या कृणोतु नः ॥

From Heaven and Earth we choose for ourselves the saving protection; we call also the sustaining Mothers— the Rivers and the firm Mountains rich in movement and strength. O blameless One, we invoke the Sun and the Dawn within us; may Soma, pressed out today, create for us the Good—an auspicious state of being.

द्यावा नो अद्य पृथिवी अनागसो मही त्रायेतां सुविताय मातरा । उषा उच्छन्त्यप बाधतामघं स्वस्त्यग्निं समिधानमीमहे ॥

May Heaven and Earth today, the faultless great Mothers, protect us for the happy journey and right going. May the Dawn as she rises drive away the evil; for well-being we seek Agni who is being kindled within.

Mantra 4

इयं न उस्रा प्रथमा सुदेव्यं रेवत्सनिभ्यो रेवती व्युच्छतु । आरे मन्युं दुर्विदत्रस्य धीमहि स्वस्त्यग्निं समिधानमीमहे ॥

May this first radiant Dawn shine forth for us with a happy divine working, rich in plenitudes for those who win; far away may we set the anger of the ill-finding power. For well-being we seek Agni who is being kindled within.

प्र याः सिस्रते सूर्यस्य रश्मिभिर्ज्योतिर्भरन्तीरुषसो व्युष्टिषु । भद्रा नो अद्य श्रवसे व्युच्छत स्वस्त्यग्निं समिधानमीमहे ॥

Those Dawns that surge forward bearing light with the Sun’s rays in their awakenings—may they dawn for us today as the Good for our hearing and inner fame. For well-being we seek Agni who is being kindled within.

अनमीवा उषस आ चरन्तु न उदग्नयो जिहतां ज्योतिषा बृहत् । आयुक्षातामश्विना तूतुजिं रथं स्वस्त्यग्निं समिधानमीमहे ॥

May the Dawns come to us free from affliction; may the Fires leap up with the vast light. May the Aśvins yoke their swift-impelling chariot. For well-being we seek Agni who is being kindled within.

Mantra 7

श्रेष्ठं नो अद्य सवितर्वरेण्यं भागमा सुव स हि रत्नधा असि । रायो जनित्रीं धिषणामुप ब्रुवे स्वस्त्यग्निं समिधानमीमहे ॥

O Savitar, bring forth for us today the best and most to-be-chosen share, for thou art indeed the holder of the treasures. I call near the Dhiṣaṇā, the begetter of plenitude. For well-being we seek Agni who is being kindled within.

Mantra 8

पिपर्तु मा तदृतस्य प्रवाचनं देवानां यन्मनुष्या अमन्महि । विश्वा इदुस्राः स्पळुदेति सूर्यः स्वस्त्यग्निं समिधानमीमहे ॥

May that utterance of Ṛta fill me—the word of the gods which we mortals have come to perceive. All the radiant lights—clearly—rise up as the Sun goes forth. For well-being we seek Agni who is being kindled within.

Mantra 9

अद्वेषो अद्य बर्हिषः स्तरीमणि ग्राव्णां योगे मन्मनः साध ईमहे । आदित्यानां शर्मणि स्था भुरण्यसि स्वस्त्यग्निं समिधानमीमहे ॥

Without hostility today, on the well-spread seat of the sacred grass, at the joining of the pressing-stones, we seek the accomplishment of the rite by steady thought. In the shelter of the Ādityas may you stand and move onward. For well-being we seek Agni who is being kindled within.

Mantra 10

आ नो बर्हिः सधमादे बृहद्दिवि देवाँ ईळे सादया सप्त होतॄन् । इन्द्रं मित्रं वरुणं सातये भगं स्वस्त्यग्निं समिधानमीमहे ॥

Let the broad barhis come to us in the common delight; in the vast heaven I adore the gods—seat the seven Hotṛs. For victory in attainment, (bring) Indra, Mitra, Varuṇa, and Bhaga. For well-being we seek Agni who is being kindled within.

Mantra 11

त आदित्या आ गता सर्वतातये वृधे नो यज्ञमवता सजोषसः । बृहस्पतिं पूषणमश्विना भगं स्वस्त्यग्निं समिधानमीमहे ॥

Come, O Ādityas, for our total wholeness; for our increase protect the sacrifice in one accord. (Bring also) Bṛhaspati, Pūṣan, the Aśvins, and Bhaga. For well-being we seek Agni who is being kindled within.

Mantra 12

तन्नो देवा यच्छत सुप्रवाचनं छर्दिरादित्याः सुभरं नृपाय्यम् । पश्वे तोकाय तनयाय जीवसे स्वस्त्यग्निं समिधानमीमहे ॥

O Gods, grant us that well-speaking utterance, that shelter of the Ādityas—easy to bear and fit to guard the inner kingdom. For our energies, for the child-soul and its growth, for the very power to live, we seek the kind auspiciousness by kindling Agni, the Divine Will, within us.

Mantra 13

विश्वे अद्य मरुतो विश्व ऊती विश्वे भवन्त्वग्नयः समिद्धाः । विश्वे नो देवा अवसा गमन्तु विश्वमस्तु द्रविणं वाजो अस्मे ॥

May all the Maruts today become for us the universal help; may all the fires be fully kindled. May all the gods come to us with their protection, and may there be in us the complete abundance—substance of being and plenitude of force.

Mantra 14

यं देवासोऽवथ वाजसातौ यं त्रायध्वे यं पिपृथात्यंहः । यो वो गोपीथे न भयस्य वेद ते स्याम देववीतये तुरासः ॥

He whom you Gods support in the winning of plenitude, whom you protect, whom you carry beyond distress—he who, in your guardianship, knows no fear: may we become such, O swift powers, fit for the gods’ delight and their coming to us.
