Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa’s rasa-foundation is a non-dual union of karuṇā and śānta: karuṇā, because even dharma’s victory arrives tearing the heart; śānta, because that very pain becomes discernment and opens the path of release. In this excerpt, the night-episode (Siyā-Rāma’s rest, Lakṣmaṇa’s watchful spirit, the Niṣāda’s love-laden sorrow) becomes a metaphor for the “night of delusion” (moha-niśā). Lakṣmaṇa’s instruction leads toward karma and its fruit, dream and waking, dispassion toward objects, and love for Rāma’s feet—here Tulasī’s doctrinal “cement” is clear: nirguṇa paramārtha and saguṇa līlā are one. Rāma is Brahman in form, yet out of compassion He assumes a human body and enacts His deeds. Sumantra bearing the king’s command, Rāma’s steadfastness in dharma, and Sītā’s vow as sahadharmiṇī—together make “renunciation” a “stairway of bhakti.” The place-truth of this section is that bhakti is no longer only emotion; it becomes decision-shaped sādhana.

Knowing that the Lord was asleep, Lakshmana rose, and speaking gentle words, bade the minister go to sleep. Then, a little way off, he made ready his arrows and bow, and sitting in the heroic posture, began to keep watch. Guha called trusted watchmen and, with great affection, posted them at one place after another. He himself went and sat near Lakshmana, with a quiver at his waist and an arrow fitted to his bow. Seeing the Lord asleep, the Nishada was overcome with love, and sorrow filled his heart. His body thrilled, tears flowed from his eyes, and he spoke to Lakshmana with loving words. The king's palace is beautiful by its very nature; even the abode of Indra, lord of the gods, could not match it. Its lovely upper chambers are built of jewels, as though the god of love had fashioned them with his own hands.

There were many kinds of cloths, pillows and mattresses, soft, spotless and lovely, white as the froth of milk. On such a bed Sita and Rama used to sleep at night, and with their own beauty they put to shame the pride of Rati and Kamadeva. Those same Sita and Rama now lay asleep on a bed of grass, weary and without a covering, a sight too painful to look upon. Mother and father, kinsfolk and the people of the city, gentle friends, menservants and maidservants, all of whom guarded him as they would their own life, that same Lord Rama now sleeps on the bare earth. Her father is Janaka, whose glory is known throughout the world; her father-in-law is Dasharatha, the friend of Indra, the lord of the gods. Her husband is Ramachandra, and she is the daughter of Videha; yet she sleeps on the ground. Against whom is Fate not hostile? Are Sita and the Hero of the Raghus fit for the forest? People speak truly when they say that action and destiny are supreme.

She has become the axe to the tree of the Solar race; her evil mind has made the whole world wretched. Great grief came upon the Nishada when he saw Rama and Sita lying on the ground. Lakshmana spoke in sweet and gentle words, steeped in the savor of wisdom, detachment and devotion. No one is the giver of joy or sorrow to another. Everyone, brother, undergoes the fruit of his own deeds. Union and separation, enjoyments, good and bad, friend, foe and stranger: all these are snares of delusion. Birth and death, and every entanglement of the world, wealth and woe, action and time; earth, house, riches, city and family, heaven and hell, and all the dealings of the world; whatever is seen, heard or conceived in the mind: delusion is the root of it all, and none of it is the highest reality.

Considering this, do not give way to anger, and do not lay blame on anyone in vain. All are sleepers in the night of delusion, and they see dreams of many kinds. In this night of the world only the yogis stay awake, those who seek the highest truth and have detached themselves from the world's illusion. A soul should be known to be awake in the world only when it has become free from desire for sensual pleasures. Then discernment arises and the error of delusion flees, and after that comes love for the feet of the Lord of the Raghus. Friend, this is the highest truth: love for the feet of Rama in mind, deed and word. Rama is Brahman, the very form of the highest truth, beyond knowing, beyond perception, without beginning, and without equal. He is free from every flaw and without distinction; the Vedas describe him, ever saying "not this, not this."

Friend, understand this, give up your delusion, and be devoted to the feet of Sita and the Hero of the Raghus. As he spoke of Rama's virtues, the dawn broke, and the givers of happiness and well-being to the world awoke. Rama performed all his purifying rites and bathed; then the pure and wise one had the milk of the banyan tree brought. Together with his younger brother he made his hair into matted locks on his head. Seeing this, Sumantra's eyes filled with tears. His heart burned with great anguish and his face was downcast; with folded hands he spoke words full of humility. "Lord, the king of Kosala said to me: 'Take the chariot and go with Rama.'" "'Show them the forest, let them bathe in the Ganges, and bring both brothers back quickly.'" "'Bring back Lakshmana, Rama and Sita, setting aside all their doubts and scruples.'"

Father, be kind and do that by which Ayodhya may not be left without a protector. Rama raised the minister and consoled him: "Father, you have searched out and understood the whole path of righteousness." Shibi, Dadhichi and King Harishchandra endured millions of afflictions for the sake of righteousness. Rantideva and the wise king Bali upheld righteousness, bearing many kinds of calamity. There is no other righteousness equal to truth; so the Agamas, the Vedas and the Puranas declare. I have obtained that very righteousness with ease; if I abandon it, disgrace will spread over the three worlds. For one who is honored, the gain of disgrace is a dreadful burning, equal to a million deaths. Father, what more shall I say to you? By giving you a reply I would only incur sin.

You, moreover, are very dear to me, like a father; I make this request to you, dear sir, with folded hands. In every way this is what you must do: see that my father suffers no grief on our account. Hearing this conversation between Rama and the minister, the Nishada and his whole company were overcome with distress. Then Lakshmana spoke some harsh words, but the Lord, judging them very improper, forbade him. Rama, abashed, made Lakshmana swear by his own oath: "Do not go and deliver this message." Then Sumantra gave the king's message: "Sita will not be able to bear the hardships of the forest." "By whatever means Sita may return to Ayodhya, that, O best of the Raghus, is what you must do." "Otherwise, left utterly without support, I shall not live, like a fish without water."

The way the king made his entreaty, and the anguish and love with which he made it, cannot be told. Hearing his father's message, the Lord, the treasury of compassion, counselled Sita in countless ways. If you return, the distress of your mothers-in-law, your father-in-law, your guru and your dear family will all be ended. Hearing her husband's words, Vaidehi said: "Listen, O Lord of my life, my dearest beloved. My Lord, you are full of compassion and supremely wise. How can a shadow, once it has left the body, be held back and stay? Where can sunlight go, leaving the sun? Where can moonlight go, forsaking the moon?" Having made this entreaty, full of love, to her husband, she spoke charming words to the minister. "You are as much my well-wisher as my father and my father-in-law, and for me to answer you in return would be a grave impropriety.

I have seen the splendor and pleasures of my father's house, where the jewelled crowns of kings crowd about his footstool. Such is my father's house, a treasury of happiness, yet without my beloved it does not please my mind, not even by chance. My father-in-law is the emperor, the king of Kosala, whose glory is manifest throughout the fourteen worlds. Going forward to meet him, Indra, the lord of the gods, takes him and gives him a seat on half his throne. Such is my father-in-law, and Ayodhya is my dwelling; my family is dear to me, and my mother-in-law is like my own mother. Yet without the dust of the lotus feet of the Lord of the Raghus, nothing has seemed pleasant to me, even in a dream. The road is impassable, with forest lands, mountains, elephants, lions, lakes and boundless rivers. The Kols and Kirats, the deer and the birds: all of these are pleasant to me when I am with the lord of my life.

With the lord of my life and my dear brother-in-law beside me, both foremost of heroes, bearing bow and quiver, I feel no weariness on the road, no bewilderment, no sorrow in my heart. Do not, even by mistake, be anxious on my account. Hearing Sita's soothing words, Sumantra became distraught, like a serpent that has lost its jewel. His eyes could not see and his ears could not hear; he could say nothing, so overcome was he with anguish. Rama comforted him in many ways, yet his heart would not be soothed. He made many efforts to be allowed to go along with them, and the Delight of the Raghus gave him a fitting answer to each. Rama's command cannot be set aside; the course of fate is hard, and nothing is in his power. Bowing his head at the feet of Rama, Lakshmana and Sita, he turned back like a merchant who has lost his capital.

When the charioteer drove the chariot on, the horses kept looking back at Rama and neighing. Seeing this, the Nishadas were overcome with grief; they beat their heads and lamented.
